“Check back in with me later. I’d love to know if you found that bug at school. If not, I can take you to the nature center after you finish your homework, and we can do some searching.” Elliot grinned as Rowan wiggled his hands in excitement.
As they talked, they lost track of time. They’d talk about something exciting, something scary, something boring, and eventually, Rowan fell asleep next to Elliot. Elliot looked at Rowan affectionately and pulled a blanket around him. He was glad Rowan could get some extra sleep. He’d wake him up when it was time and drive him to school.
Later that day, during lunch, Rowan sat in the corner of the school's lunch area. He sat on the floor with his back against the wall. He was pulling his lunch bag out of his backpack, but something fell out with it. It was a bag of two peanut butter cookies, accompanied by a note from Claire. He smiled to himself. He knew she made those herself, and those peanut butter cookies were his favorite.
Rowan sat there smiling, his mouth filled with cookies; he had to do something to thank Claire and Elliot. He stood and walked over to his tree. He grabbed his phone out of his bag and went to ChatGPT.
WHAT TYPES OF GIFTS CAN YOU GIVE TO YOUR ADOPTIVE PARENTS TO THANK THEM?
Rowan scrolled through the options.
• A heartfelt letter or card – Write about what they mean to you and how they’ve impacted your life. You could frame the letter or pair it with a photo.
Hmm, maybe. But I always write when I talk to them. It feels less special.
•A custom family tree – Include them at the heart of it to symbolize how they’ve rooted and grown your family.
Eh, Nah, I don’t know about this one. Doesn’t feel like me.
•A photo book or scrapbook – Fill it with memories you’ve shared together, milestones, or favorite moments.
Maybe… I’ll write this down for later.
• A plant or tree – Symbolizing how they’ve helped you grow. You can even attach a tag saying, “Thanks for helping me grow.”
Hm, maybe.
•A cooking or baking set – If they love the kitchen, pair it with a note like, “Thank you for filling my life with love (and delicious food).”
For Claire, that might work, but not for Elliot.
•A framed family photo – Maybe one from a favorite vacation, event, or just a casual happy moment.
We don’t have many photos of all of us…
• Plan a “thank you” dinner – Cook for them or take them out to their favorite restaurant.
Five years ago, Rowan witnessed his brother's accident and has carried the guilt ever since. Through many scarring experiences, Rowan developed traumatic mutism and has never spoken to anyone, not even his new foster parents. But as memories resurface and new relationships begin, he has to decide: will he open up, or risk losing the people trying to love him?
