A long time had passed and the storm was worse than it had been all winter. The snow and wind constantly threatened to tear the roof off. But, Fern and his family did not find it threatening. They were comfortable in their home, accompanied by each other.
“Then, Wonder, the brave rabbit, beat the winter wolves and saved his friends.” Amalia said dramatically as she told the children a story. Willow and Echo both leaned in, nearly falling over with anticipation. “And the foxes of spring danced over the sky, thawing the world and bringing peace once more. He became the hero of the rabbits.”
Willow clapped eagerly while Echo did not seem impressed by the tale. “A small rabbit like Wonder could not fight off the winter wolves.” Echo demanded. “They were as big as trees with teeth like icicles and fur so cold you'd get frostbite from touching them. How could he defeat them?” Fern laughed a little, amused by his children.
“Beacause,” Amalia started, with an innocent smile. “He was brave. Though he was terrified of the winter wolves, he kept trying and saved the other rabbits. He believed.” Echo crossed his arms, clearly not convinced.
“Well, I believe it.” Stated Willow, proudly. Willow leaned over and touched Amalia's stomach gently. “Mama, have you and Papa decided on a name yet?” Both Amalia and Fern looked at each other, then back to their children.
“We were actually wondering if you two wanted to find a name.” When Fern said this, his children became giddy with excitement. As they got ready for bed, and were tucked in, Echo and Willow announced at the same time,
“Wonder.” They said, proudly. “The baby's name should be Wonder.”
Fern tilted his head. “Why Wonder? Isn’t that the name of the rabbit from the story?” Amalia had about the same reaction.
“We should name him Wonder because when he's born, the storm will be over and then spring will come, just like in the story.” Explained little Willow.
“It only makes sense to name him Wonder.” Said Echo.
Amalia shrugged and kissed them both goodnight. “With that logic, who could argue? The baby's name shall be Wonder.”
And as the children had predicted, with the birth of Fern's new son, the storm subsided, making way for spring. The boy was beautiful. He had his mother's dark hair and skin, his father's face, and his eyes! Fern had never seen a child with eyes like these. One eye was blue, like his. And the other was ruby, like Amalia's eyes. Though he was the child of two warring kingdoms, and would be hated for it, his family couldn't help but love him more than anything.
