Chosen Ones: Heroes Rise
Chapter 1
Tarin Jacobs was a powerless person, if there was one thing he’s learned throughout his life it was that some people were more powerful than others. At least that’s what he used to think. Tarin was a normal person, and he did everything a normal person might. The only thing he was never prepared for, was what was about to happen to him.
“Hey Tarin, are you going on the field trip?” Tarin’s friend, Max Monium, asked.
Tarin shrugged, “I don’t know, a field trip to a Genex reserve? I’m not so sure about those guys.”
“Well you better get used to it, they’re everywhere in the city now.” Max said, he was right. Ever since the new Biomechanical company, Genex, came to New York they had made some major modifications to the city. Some were actually good, they made a huge nature reserve outside of the city, and brought many animals from around the world there. They seemed off though. A Biomechanical company creating an animal reserve? That didn’t seem right to Tarin.
Tarin sighed, “If you and everyone else is going, then I might as well.”
Max pumped his fist, “Yes! I finally got everyone to go.”
“Really?” Tarin asked,
“Well not everyone, I wasn’t able to get Sorra or Eithan to go.” Max said, their friend group had six people in it, Tarin, Max, Colton, Aaron, Sorra, and Eithan. They all weren’t very popular among other people in the school, but that’s why they decided to stay together.
“Well, that’s fine. All you need is a few friends to roam around a nature reserve right?” Tarin asked,
Max nodded, “Ya, true.”
Tarin and Max met up with the rest of their friends at lunch, they sat in the back of the lunch room. They had all met there actually, when finding a place to sit him and Max came there and met all of them. When they went into the lunch room, two of their friends were waiting where they always were right in the front. They’d developed a tendency to wait for everyone to come together before going to the table.
Colton waved at them, “Hey guys.” He said, Tarin and Max waved back. “You get him to do it too?” Colton asked Max.
Max nodded, “Yep! Everyone but Sorra and Eithan, I’m going to try and convince them during lunch.”
Tarin came over to Aaron, who as always was already eating. “Hey slow down, we haven't even sat down yet.”
Aaron nodded, “Ya, but you guys take too long.”
They all went over to the table where Eithan and Sorra sat, they waved to them. They all got into their regular seating, and started to eat. Eithan had his headphones on him, as he always did. He didn’t even look up when Max asked him if he was going on the field trip.
“Hey, Eithan!” Max said again,
Eithan looked up, and took off his headphones. “What’s up?”
“Are you going on the field trip?” Max asked,
Eithan shook his head, “Na, don’t trust that Genex.” Tarin pointed to Eithan.
“See! There’s something wrong with that place, they bought a reserve but not do anything with it? They literally don’t even have a product!” Tarin explained,
Max shook his head, “It doesn’t matter! We were invited to this reserve, and might as well take the opportunity.”
Colton shook his head, “I agree with Eithan and Tarin, they don’t actually have a good excuse for anything. I’m only going on this trip because I could see some cool animals.”
Aaron nodded, “Same, but hopefully like the venomous ones or the cool fish that are in the rivers.”
Max looked confused, “You mean the piranhas?” he asked,
Aaron nodded, “Ya, those!”
Colton looked at Aaron, “You know those things bite right?”
“The sharpest teeth from the jungle.” Aaron said.
Once school ended everyone went home, Tarin’s house was a block away from the school so he walked to school everyday. When he got home his mom, Kathrine Jacobs, was cooking dinner. The TV was on in the kitchen, and it smelled like pasta all in the house.
“Hey I'm home!” Tarin yelled into the house,
“Welcome home!” His mother yelled back, “How was school?” She was a nurse, and had to leave the house often.
“Good, nothing exciting.” Actually nothing was ever exciting for Tarin, ever. Except for when he went to his room, Tarin dropped his backpack in the front and ran to the second floor of their apartment. He ran straight into his room, and when he opened the door he laid on his bed. He looked to his desk, when most teenagers would have homework or essays Tarin had computers and fun gadgets. Tarin rushed over to his newest creation, he called it the friction reducer. His mom had gone too fast on the road once, and one of her tires literally caught on fire. Ever since he’d been making a little friction resistant casing, hopefully to reduce any friction. His mom called him a genius for his talent in technology, but for him it was like breathing. You know how to do it right when you're born. He’d created a 3D printer powerful enough to create the casing, and heat it up at the same time. He went onto his bed, and thought about the next thing he could make.
Tarin has a very repetitive life, goes to school, goes home, and does it over and over. Today was the day the field trip was, and to his surprise when he got to school he saw very few people going on the trip. Tarin found Max and the rest of his friends.
“Hey, where is everyone?” He asked,
Aaron shrugged, “Not a whole lot of people who like this place.”
Max was happy, “Well it doesn’t matter, we'll have fun. They said they were going to let us just walk around the reserve!”
Colton nodded, “I mean it might be fun.”
They all got onto the bus and rode to the reserve, when they got there it was much bigger than Tarin imagined. There were multiple entrances, and a lot of guards for some reason. That is what made Tarin so suspicious in the first place. When they were finally let into the facility, they were in a rocky desert. They could see a forest far away, and fencing all around the side. One of the people escorted Max, Aaron, Colton, and Tarin to one jeep. They started to move, and as they went through the desert even Tarin was starting to get excited about what they would find.
