Chapter 3
“What happened out there?” Asked Sorra once Tarin and his friends got back to base.
They all looked at each other, Tarin finally said back. “We don’t know. Dark Dash is the only supervillain we’ve been up against, and now since the deal with my mom is off I guess having more villains around is overwhelming.”
Colton looked at her with wide eyes, “Ya, a little bit.”
Myer nodded, “I feared this, whatever experiment he did on himself to make him go insane happened exactly with those others. Obviously Voltress got her powers from Tarin’s DNA, but I’m not so sure about the others.”
Eithan gasped, “Maybe they got that Mind dude from Aaron’s powers! Being all supernatural and all.”
Aaron sighed at him, “All of the powers are supernatural, but he might be right. My and Tarin’s powers are the most supernatural ones out of all of us, but Quakeviper is another story. Who would he get those powers from?”
Tarin realized he never actually saw Quakeviper’s abilities, “Wait, what could he do again?”
Colton jumped onto a hammock on the ceiling, “He was able to pull rocks out of the ground and throw them, pretty cool if it wasn’t thrown at me.”
“Geokinesis.” Corrected Dr. Myer.
Colton waved his hand as if pushing away the doctor's comment, “Well the beast thing was the real weird one, he just attacks and bites and scratches. Annoying little critter.”
“Alright so we have multiple new super/insane people correct?” Asked Sorra, they all nodded. “Then just beat them up!” She said,
Max shook his head, “They outnumber us, we’ll get destroyed every time. If Dark Dash wasn’t a thing then I’d say Tarin could knock them all out, but Méndez is… No offense to you Tarin, but he’s much faster than you.”
Tarin nodded, “I know, he has some kind of hyperspeed. Much faster, fast enough he doesn’t build up enough kinetic energy in time to burst into flames.”
Eithan interrupted the meeting swiftfully, “So you need backup right?” He asked, with a huge smile on his face.
Tarin knew what he was going to ask, and he was going to say no at first but with all these new superpeople maybe they needed some help. “Alright, Dr. Myer, I'll need your assistance in the plant lab.” Tarin walked into the lab where he worked with the plants, testing and studying them. Dr. Myer came in as well. “Lock the door, nobody should see what we’re about to see.”
Tarin explained in further detail of what the plants could do, and explained how he’d been testing them. Then acknowledged his idea for a hypogenic mutation, and how they would do so. For the next few days Tarin and Dr. Myers worked on the experimental mutation synthesis, and let Tarin’s friends handle the city. Once they thought they’d put together an okay structure for the process they called in Tarin’s friends, who all looked exhausted.
“Sorry I haven't been around, this thing required ages to design.” Tarin motioned toward a small machine, about the size of a washing machine.
Eithan clapped his hands together, “It’s amazing! What is it?”
“This is a prototype power-giver. We’ve created a serum we think will be able to give you both powers, from two different plants we haven’t tested yet.” Explained Tarin.
Myer explained further, “It’s a machine that will re-code the genetics of the plants into the virus that will give you your powers.”
Sorra eyed the machine suspiciously, “Have you tested it on a test subject?”
Tarin smiled, “If we did that it might have made a black hole in our home base, so. Ya. We had five different serums that we hydro-mutated into each other. They will give you different abilities.”
Myer clapped his hands, “Alright, who wants to go first?” Eithan, as expected, immediately raised his hand. They got him ready for the re-coding of his genetic pattern. Dr. Myer put a mask on, and Sorra wasn’t pleased with that.
“Wait, should I be wearing one of those masks too?” Sorra asked.
Myer shrugged, “You’ll be fine, I’m the one all the way up here doing the experiment,” Sorra seemed to trust him, because she walked away a little and watched from afar.
Myer twisted the mist and Eithan started breathing fast while wearing the mask, Tarin guessed, hoping to get insane superpowers. No Mist came through the machine.
Eithan stopped when he noticed, “Did something go wro…” Before Eithan could finish his sentence the gas canister holding the substance exploded, creating a mist that went through half of the room.
Once Tarin got up he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time, the same feeling he’d felt when he’d got his powers. They were electrocuting, ecstatic. He looked around to see Myer hadn't been sent into the blast, but that all of his friends did. He started getting them up, and Myer helped. Once they all got together and the mist fell they talked about what just happened, Eithan complained about his powers.
“So? Did I get powers? It doesn’t feel like it.” He said.
“You know it took a whole day for us to develop our powers, you should be lucky you're even getting powers.” Tarin said. Eithan closed his mouth at that, but Sorra kept looking around like everything was new.
“Why can I see everything?” Sorra asked.
Tarin looked at her, “What do you mean?”
“I feel like I can see every atom and control it. Like it will listen to me.” She said,
Tarin looked at their friends, and they all shrugged. “Try it.” He told her. She walked into the middle of the room and extended her hand, when she did a purple cube was formed in the air. Unmoving, just floating in the air.
Aaron looked at it, “She can create light constructs like me?”
Tarin shook his head, “Different, look at it. It’s different, you make only surfaces that can’t be fully touched. She can make full on blocks and items.” Tarin went to touch the block. When he did it felt like nothing, but he couldn’t push through it so it was something.
“Uh guys?” Said Eithan from behind them. They all turned around to see a roaring flame in front of them, and a person inside it. Eithan.
“Eithan! Are you ok?” Asked Sorra.
Eithan nodded, “Ya, it doesn’t hurt.” He clenched his fist and a piece of the fire jumped out, and floated around him. “I can control it.” He said.
Myer was looking at both of them in awe, “How are you two developing your powers so fast?”
Tarin turned to him, “It’s probably because we forced the process on them heavily, so they got their powers immediately while we were given them over time.”
Sorra was now creating flurries of purple light, and started shooting out blasts of energy. “Wow!” She announced, “Having powers is so much cooler than what I thought!”
Tarin started taking down notes on his two friends, saying them out loud so they could hear their own abilities. “Subject one, Eithan, is expressing pyrokinetic abilities. Able to create and control them, he burst into flames a few moments after being subject to the serum.” Tarin moved over to Sorra who was now trying to create what seemed to be a platform, “Subject two, Sorra, seems to be able to create telepathic blasts of energy and solid constructs. She seems to be trying to make herself fly with them.”
“And you narrating everything isn’t helping!” Complained Sorra.
Tarin walked over to Max, Colton, and Aaron. “So they have powers now, I guess we did what we intended. In return we did destroy the thing we created though.”
Max nodded, “Maybe that was for the best, random people running around with powers. Not the best idea, hopefully we can train these two and be able to face Dark Dash and his crew of monsters.” Tarin nodded.
Tarin felt something weird again, the feeling of electricity. “Something's wrong.” He said to his friends, he said. Sorra was the first to respond, but she was preparing another blast of energy. The bolt flew at Tarin. Everyone yelled, but Tarin stayed there looking at the bolt of energy. He outstretched his hand, and the bolt went straight into his arm. It glowed in his hand, and traveled around into his other arm and shot a bolt of lightning into the floor. “I think we got more powers too.” Tarin said, while everyone watched the bolt he just sent to the floor. Creating a huge burn mark on it.
