The wilds

Evelyn

Evelyn

Aug 20, 2025

The first tendril of morning light, filtered through the heavy silk drapes, found Evelyn stirring. Her bright, blue eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the opulent stillness of her king-sized bed. For a moment, she simply lay there, the plush duvet a comforting weight, her mind a blank slate trying to catch up with the world. Then, with a soft sigh, Evelyn, her long red hair a vibrant spill across the pillows, pushed herself up.

Her "fancy huge room" was more like a private wing, a symphony of cream and gold, filled with antique furniture and fresh flowers. She swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet sinking into the thick, Persian rug. Her morning ritual was a precise ballet of luxury. She padded into the mosaic-tiled bathroom, its vastness almost intimidating, and stepped into the cascade of the rain shower, letting the warm water sluice over her bright skin. Once refreshed, she meticulously brushed her teeth, her reflection in the gilded mirror a picture of serene beauty.

Emerging, she glided towards her walk-in closet, a veritable boutique itself, and selected one of her "nicest clothes" – a tailored silk blouse in a deep sapphire, paired with impeccably cut cream trousers. A maid, already waiting, moved with practiced ease, gently styling Evelyn’s striking red hair into an elegant, low chignon. As the last strand was secured, Evelyn adorned herself with delicate jewelry – a diamond pendant that caught the light, and simple pearl stud earrings.

Downstairs, the aroma of brewing coffee and freshly baked pastries led her to the sun-drenched breakfast nook. Her father, Michael Bennett, sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, a newspaper folded neatly beside his plate of eggs and fruit. His grey hair was neatly combed, and a gentle smile touched his lips as he looked up.

“Good morning, Dad,” Evelyn greeted, her voice soft.

“Good morning to you too, sweetheart,” he replied, his smile widening. It had always been just them. Evelyn’s mother had died of cancer when she was seventeen, a void that still lingered, though softened by time. Michael had refused to see any other women, a silent monument to his love. It was heartbreaking for Evelyn to watch him alone sometimes, yet she admired his unwavering devotion.

She poured herself a cup of coffee and settled into her usual seat. “So, are we really considering Rachel as part of the design development?” she asked, cutting straight to the point.

Michael took a sip of his own coffee. “Only as a trainee. I don’t need her all the time, and I know your uncle Brad also has his plans with her.” He paused, his gaze softening. “You still don’t trust her?”

Evelyn stirred her coffee slowly. “I won’t say that. I just… She’s new, and I’m trying to accept her into our friends group.” The unspoken fear hung in the air – the tight-knit circle she cherished, a legacy of her youth and her mother’s friendships, felt vulnerable.

“She seems like a nice girl,” Michael offered, ever the optimist.

Evelyn sighed. “I know, but what if it tears us apart? Like when Lisa took over Alexander’s life and almost destroyed his life, and business, even more.” She mumbled the last part, a shiver running down her spine at the memory. Michael reached across the table, placing a comforting hand over hers. He looked at his only child, his beloved daughter, the sole heir to his company, the only thing left for him from his past wife.

“Don’t worry, no one is going to let that happen again,” he assured her, offering a calm smile. Alexander, Felix, and Max were like the sons he never had with his wife. He was more than willing to guide Alexander in the business world, seeing the same fire of his old friend Rex in him. It sometimes amused him how much of a carbon copy Alexander was of Rex, even though Alexander tried as much as possible to not be, even going so far as to shave off his beard any chance he got just to avoid looking exactly like Rex.

Evelyn leaned forward, hugging her father and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. “I love you, Dad.”

“Love you too, sweetie. Have a good day at the academy.”

Stepping into the waiting car, Evelyn settled back against the leather seat, watching the city blur past the window. She felt a familiar thrill mixed with the daily routine. Her driver navigated the familiar route to the academy, and Evelyn’s thoughts drifted between her upcoming business major classes – crucial preparation for taking over her father’s company after he retired – and her true passion: music. Like her mother, Evelyn dreamed of being a musician, a dream she pursued diligently alongside her corporate education.

As the car pulled up to the academy entrance, Evelyn’s bright red hair caught the morning sun. Just as she stepped out, a cheerful voice called her name.

“Morning, Evelyn!” Rachel, her dark hair pulled back in a neat ponytail, approached with a bright smile.

“Oh, morning, Rachel. You’re already done with your morning sections with Uncle Brad?” Evelyn asked, a hint of surprise in her tone.

“Yes! And also! I wanted to ask if you’re sure you can make it this weekend to help Cassandra out!” Rachel asked with palpable excitement.

Evelyn smiled, her blue eyes twinkling. “Of course I am, Cass needs it. Also, I know a place that will be perfect to try things out for her.”

By the weekend, Evelyn was genuinely surprised. Emily, usually one for last-minute cancellations, actually didn’t joke when she said she was coming along. And Heather, too. Evelyn knew Heather was still absorbing Rachel, scrutinizing her every move, and didn't trust her fully. Even Alexander, usually so headstrong, had been switching in attitude around Rachel ever since the "nightmare fog accident" in the office weeks ago. He was surprisingly compliant when Rachel constantly reminded him to take breaks and focus on his work. Evelyn had never seen Alexander being so obedient, and what truly surprised her was that Rachel wasn't even taking advantage of it, a stark difference from how Lisa used to treat Alexander.

The boutique they were in, with Erica and Cassandra, hummed with activity. Bolts of fabric lay draped over chairs, mannequins stood poised in various stages of dress, and the soft echo of measuring tapes filled the air. While Rachel, Erica, and Evelyn were busy discussing designs with Cassandra, Heather drew Nova aside, her voice low. “So, about Rachel… what do you really know?”

Evelyn, though preoccupied, couldn't help but discreetly listen in. She expected some tidbit, some hidden flaw, something that would justify Heather's lingering suspicion. But to Evelyn and Heather's surprise, there was nothing too suspicious that Nova knew about.

Nova shrugged, a fond smile playing on her lips. “Rachel can look scary and unapproachable at first glance, I’ll give you that. But once she opens her mouth and becomes friends, she is the softest person you will ever know!”

Rachel Wilde’s life was already complicated — a degree she never wanted, a family that never understood her, and a quiet longing for a world that felt more alive.

Then came the crystal.

A mysterious woman pressed it into her hands, and soon the sketches in Rachel’s notebook began to breathe, speak… move. But with life came shadows — creatures born from her darkest thoughts, voices that whispered in her dreams, and an ancient force that wanted its freedom at any cost.

As Rachel’s control begins to slip, she must decide whether the crystal is a gift… or a curse that will destroy everything she loves.
