Chapter 9

After the realization that the controllers were in the school, and that they even still existed was one thing. But getting Albert not to tell anyone was another, they agreed it would be better for them not to tell anyone. They went through the next few weeks carefully, and kept an eye on their fellow classmates. After two weeks they were free to go if they wanted, for the school year was over. Albert and Johnathan packed up their things, and Johnathan made sure his comics were still going to be there when he got back. The mages assured him they would, but trust him he made them say it.

Albert was still freaking out at times, but was managing to keep it in. They both agreed to tell the Master Knight at some point, then they had to say goodbye. It was really hard, Albert, the weird kid on the bus. Had probably become one of Johnathan's best friends, plus he wasn’t expelled.

He packed up his things and went to the door to the human realm, Albert was already there. “Hey Alberto!” He joked, but Albert didn’t move. “Hey, I know what you're thinking. But at least go and not think about the whole thing over the summer, be a normal kid. Even if you have crazy powers and all.”

Albert smiled, “I’ll do my best,” He turned to Johnathan, “We’re going to figure this out right?”

Johnathan nodded, “Of course! People are literally trying to kill me. If I didn’t figure this out, I’m pretty sure I’d be dying in a year or two.” He joked.

Albert smiled, and Johnathan’s friend from races class tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around to see his Demon friend, Naamah. “Hey, how’s the whole murder thing going?” Now I know it’s crazy, tell a demon girl that you may or may not have a target on your head? Crazy! But Johnathan trusted her, she helped him out in class. Told him all about the Demon realm, even offered to show him one day. They were good friends.

“For me, fine. For him, not so much.”

Albert turned around and waved, “Hi Naamah, and ya, you could say that.”

“May I ask why?” Naamah asked.

Albert shrugged, “This guy’s gonna die! You and him are kinda my only friends.”

Naamah laughed, “First, let’s get this straight. He’s gonna die because the controllers see him as unfit magic, yes?”

Johnathan nodded, “Ya, I can use powerful Knight’s magic, which they’ve never liked.”

“Alright,” Naamah said, “You can defend yourself over the summer though, because of that spell right?”

Johnathan knew exactly what she was talking about, he nodded. “They won’t even try when I have that spell down.”

Albert looked at him, “When you have that spell down half of New York is going to be gone.”

Johnathan laughed, then realized Albert wasn’t kidding. “Hey, I can handle it. It’s just hard to control when doing it.”

Naamah sighed, “When are you going to learn Johnathan, magic isn’t about control! It’s about letting the chaos flow, and accepting just that. Chaos.”

Johnathan looked to Albert for confirmation, but Albert was just looking at the door. Johnathan smiled, “Hey, Naamah.” She turned to him, “You don’t have to wait for us, you should probably go back to your dimension.”

Naamah nodded, “You are wise Johnathan, for what awaits our group shall be seen.” She walked away, and Albert breathed a sigh of relief.

“How much?” Johnathan asked.

Albert looked at him, “How much what?” He asked.

“You like Naamah. It’s obvious.”

Albert sighed, “How obvious.”

“Obvious enough. Are you gonna ask her?” Johnathan said.

Albert shook his head, “I’m a human, she’s a demon. It would be too hard.”

Johnathan shrugged, “You could probably make it work somehow.”

Albert smiled, “You're a good friend Johnathan, literally once you thought I was gonna forget about you and now you're my best friend.”

Johnathan nodded, “And you always will be mine, until I accidentally vaporize you right?”

Albert frowned, “Don’t even joke about that. By the way, did you tell the Master Knight about your spell?”

Johnathan shook his head, “I don’t think I should yet, he can be super strict sometimes.”

“Then that’s the first thing you tell him when you get back, because I am not being vaporized by you.”

Johnathan smiled, “We shall see.”

The door started to open, and Mr. Hatcher started waving for the students to go in an orderly fashion. “Everyone please. People! The Master Knight will be seeing you off, now stay… Hey! No blowing up the school, we’ve discussed this.” Johnathan had heard Mr. Hatcher was strict, but he didn’t see what was wrong with him. Maybe it was just his students.

Eventually Johnathan and Albert got into the human realm and went through the airport terminal again.

“Name?” Ms. Gorgan asked.

Johnathan nodded, “Johnathan Brody. Also, Ms. Gorgan. Is it true you're immortal?”

Ms. Gorgan smiled, “Now, It wouldn’t be too fun if I told you now would it? Now move along kid, I got other kids to be bothered by.” Johnathan walked away, but saw a slight smile on Ms. Gorgan’s face.

Johnathan rode on the bus with Albert back to their stop, where they exchanged addresses and numbers. Obviously they didn’t use phones in the MDSC, but it would be good for them to see each other outside of school. Their stop was one of the last, and when they got off they stopped and looked around the bus stop. The bus went by and Johnathan just felt good, he knew magic and was now kinda a powerful mage. What would happen now? He still had a few more years in the MDSC of course, but what now?

“Hey,” Johnathan said, “So we just go home, and don’t do magic? I thought going into the world of magic would give me the ability to be stronger.”

Albert nodded, “It does, but you have to keep it hidden. If normal people found out about magic, the world would go into chaos. Not the good kind.”

Johnathan nodded, “Ya, that makes sense.” Johnathan looked at his friends, “Wanna come over to study some time?”

Albert smiled, “Ya.”

They parted ways and Johnathan walked back to his house, thinking of what Albert had said. Chaos can be good and bad, all we needed to do was keep it stable. Johnathan smiled at the thought.

“I can do that.” He walked home and wondered what next year would bring.
