"Slow and steady" Silas thought to himself "I need to match the mana wavelength"
He pulled an ampoule and poured the entire blood collected in it into a small dish. He set the dish in front of him on the floor. He took off his shirt and prepared for mana circulation through force. He sat comfortably and diffused the mana from his core slowly out into the air. Tormac wasn't back yet from his quest, so he could continue without any disturbance. His mana core was slowly depleted and emptied. After emptying it, he breathed in deep and exhaled. He was ready. He put his palm above the dish and started collecting mana back into his core from the surroundings, the new mana influx caused a slight burn on his chest, just as he had hoped.
Mana absorption was taking place just as he had practiced many times before but the new burning like sensation was due to the mana from the blood also being absorbed. Silas had devised the theory that if he needs to match the wavelength of a new source of controllable blood, he would need to familiarize himself with the mechanics of mana within that body.
This was a new step for him, one of experimentation without prior records of such cases or even theoretical pointers or advice. This was new ground of mana studies and this excited him. The mana was being absorbed and it was working, he maintained the constant influx rate the same as the outflow rate to maintain an equilibrium within the core itself. The new mana was mixing with the purified mana within the core.
Silas then forced the purified mana to mix in with the newly connected mana and push it out through his mana veins, but it was too early and the mana wavelength mismatch caused a mana blast from his palms, now facing forward. BOOM!
The blast blew the glasses off the window and broke the windowpane. Almost immediately, the academy custodian came running and screaming at the top of his lungs "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, BOY? I JUST HAD TO BE DEALING WITH THIS RIGHT NOW."
Silas apologized profusely, and said he would take care next time. Nonetheless, he was berated for 20 minutes before the custodian calmed down to assess the situation. "Even the windowpane is blown...goddamn it, boy. Giving me more work when I'm busy as it is. Fine, just give me a few minutes and this'll be as good as new." Silas was just happy he didn't have to pay anything for the damages as the Royal Family funded the Academy as as whole.
"Move to the academy training grounds at least, kid" the custodian said as he repaired.
"I'd rather not, actually. It freaks people out to see a Blood Mage train, work or experiment with blood." Silas admitted.
"Hmm, makes sense. Still, I'm gonna have to ask you to move to the grounds. 'Freaking people out' is not enough of a reason for you to be training in your room and I can't even put that in my report of repairs" the custodian sighed.
"Yeah, I'll uh....I'll do that." Silas muttered.
With the window fixed and still some time left till dusk, he decided to move to the grounds. As soon as he went in he saw his knapsack on the ground and slightly dyed red. "No, no, no, no, no, fuck" he muttered as rushed to check the ampoules. He quickly pulled out the ones that seemed unharmed. He had collected a total of 10 ampoules and used 1 so far, but the mana blast shattered 7 of them, with 1 still leaking. He quickly collected the leaking contents into a dish, grabbed his robe and rushed with the last ampoule to the training grounds to best finish his experimentation with as much progress as he can and as fast as possible.
The training ground had a hall of training attached to it, for physical combatants to practice quietly or for those who needed a bit more privacy than the others. Silas moved to the training halls to avoid the gazes of others. The training hall was huge and had about 10-15 others working on honing their own new skills and mageworks. He just moved to the corner of the room and quickly put down the dish and took off his robe. People took one look at his body and winced at the scars. Silas didn't have time to bother about their reactions, it was now or never. The mana from the blood was dissipating and he had to hurry to be able to absorb and be able to control it. The first method didn't work, time to move to Plan B. He quickly took his short sword and made a cut from the back of his wrists to his elbow and let the blood drip into the dish. He had theorized for the failure and alternatives as well. Theory B was to mix his blood with that of the beast to be able to have at least some control over it.
"Now or never" Silas thought to himself.
He quickly repeated the same process as before but this time he worked to control his own blood and levitate it and possibly separate it again. Mana drain, mana influx and mana equilibrium, just like before, now he pushed the mana into his mana veins and began to suspend the liquid mixture into the air. The fluid rose up into the air, slowly. It was barely in the control of Silas. He mentally gave it an orb shape and manipulated the mana to form a container around it just like that. The suspended liquid slowly collected to form the orb. Silas knew by using the mana container as a crutch for a crude control on blood would be shameful as a blood mage, so he very slowly let go of the mana container. Slow enough for the orb to remain shaped, the mana container slowly disappeared and the orb shape remained.
With the orb still suspended, he increased the influx of mana to reach mana saturation because he knew that for the next step he will need a lot of mana. With preparations complete, he moved to the next step in the plan: separation of the mixture. He applied mana intensely onto the orb to bifurcate it into the 2 different kinds of blood, which was the beast's and his own. The mana allowed the liquid to separate, very very slowly. It was working, Silas was elated but he continued on the separation. The liquid mixture orb over quite a while, became two distinct suspended blood orbs.
"Yes, this is it. Now, come to me" he thought to himself and gestured the suspended beast blood orb to move, and it followed his commands. he gestured it to drop onto the floor and that happened as well. He gestured through mana again to raise and form an orb and it followed as well.
As the final test, Silas took out the last ampoule as well and poured the blood on the floor and then gestured at the blood on the floor and took control with the mana and it rose from the floor, like raindrops from the sky levitating back to the clouds.
"It works! It works!" Silas exclaimed "I can now control Kobold blood as well."
"Impressive" Professor Myno said from behind him, startling him "You have perfected control over a magical beast's blood"
"Wait, Mage Myno?" Silas said "Why are you here? Did something happen?"
"Well, I got reports of a student causing wounds upon his own body and naturally, had to come check. I had a feeling it would be you but i had to be sure." Myno explained
"Yeah, sorry about that. I blew my windowpane with an accidental mana blast and was asked to practice in the halls instead." Silas admitted
"Hmm, i did hear an explosion but i didn't expect it to be you. Very well, come by tomorrow as i asked before and we can discuss your quest report and more. And don't forget about it" Myno smiled.
"Yes, Mage Myno" beamed Silas. He was on cloud nine with this milestone. This was a breakthrough for him in understanding his own magecraft.
Tormac returned the next morning and greeted Silas: "What a load of crap."
Silas inquired about his quest and the experience he had, to which Tormac replied: "We were summoned to Utstaad to clear a band of loitering goblins. Turns out it was just some kids pulling a prank. It was such a waste of our time. F-2 difficulty, my ass. Any progress on your end? Let's hear about it."
Silas just looked at him and smiled ear to ear. Tormac raised his eyebrow "Yeah, that grin looks like trouble. What did you do?"
"See for yourself" Silas said as he suspended the stored kobold blood and his own, side by side. Tormac was not amused, he just raised his eyebrows and said "So, you can control 2 blood samples at the same time? That's your breakthrough?"
"The small orb is my blood, the big one is kobold blood. I can now control Kobold blood." Silas clarified.
"Really? You can do that now? Niiceeeee" Tormac said "You wanna see what i learnt?"
"Fuck yeah, show it to me." Silas said putting the blood orbs back into containers.
Tormac gathered mana into his arms and pointed them at the sky from the window and let out a whistle. The mana gathering burst forward about 150 meters and dissipated. "My range on mana control has increased"
"We both are progressing well, eh?" Silas remarked "Come on, i gotta go meet Myno"
The academy was somewhat empty with fewer people using the facilities than usual, the quest season had them out hunting for all kinds of magical beasts, whether for adventurer's experience or for just material gathering from the beasts. The boys found Mage Myno heading toward the Archive hall and approached her.
"Mage Myno, you asked me yesterday to meet you today. Was there any particular reason?" Silas asked.
"Yes, there was. Both of you follow me." Myno gestured and continued walking "I wish there were more students right now, I truly do. Move quickly."
The two sensed tension in her voice and quietly followed her to the archive halls. She took them to the section restricted to the Professors, sat them down and locked the door
"Listen to me carefully, both of you. I need to do this as quickly as possible and get you out of the academy as fast as i can." Myno said, almost out of breath
"Professor, calm down. What is going on? You're freaking us out." Silas said.
"Velmara has declared war on Braethis" Myno said increasingly worried "The Troop Commanders are heading towards the Academy as we speak to draft anyone who can even sense mana into their rank. Get your bags and leave. NOW!"
"Wait, where will we go? How will we leave? Why didn't you tell me this yesterday, Professor?" Silas asked.
"It was just a speculation and a rumor last night, the order was given at midnight and they marched for the academy soon after. Run, if you want to survive. GO!" Myno said as she pushed them out.
"Let's go. We don't have time. Grab what you need. We are leaving as well" Silas said
"What the fuck is that? What do we do?" Tormac said almost breaking down "I can't fight in a war, i don't want to die."
"Move your ass then, you fucking moron" Silas said as tugged Tormac as quick as possible to the dorms "We take what we need and we run. Go to the dorm first and grab my knapsack, the lantern and some lantern fuel for me and take whatever else you need. I'm going to the Hall of Feasts for supplies. Be quick and we will survive. Grab everything and meet me by the Southern entrance and stay hidden till i call for you. Go!" Silas said and hurried.
The Hall of Feasts was far and he had to move as fast as possible. Nate thought to himself "I've fought enough wars and I'll be damned before i be part of another." Silas saw some of the other students rushing about as well. "Seems like they have received the news as well" Silas thought "Polus must have known, no wonder he was sure of leaving soon." Silas reached the hall and moved to the kitchen. He found an old and used large rucksack and quickly grabbed it and filled it with whatever he could get his hands on, bread, jerky, pickled salmon and whatnot. He made sure to use containers for all of the food items as he wasn't sure how long they will be on the road. He was still hurriedly filling his rucksack when he heard the trumpets of the royal messenger "Fuck, i need to move faster." He grabbed a few knives like the butchering and skinning knife as well, just in case.
He quickly jumped from the backdoor of the kitchen when he heard the doors of the halls open wide. Silas knew he had no second chances if he was caught. He jumped from bush to bush, crouching through it all to keep a low stance. He rushed to the dorms to check if Tormac had left with everything and he did. He leaned out of the window to check for guards and he saw them, rounding up and tying whoever they found. His blood boiled "Filthy self-righteous pricks" he muttered and moved on. He grabbed some thick sheets and shoved them in the rucksack and stepped out when he heard "You there, halt" It was the guards, moving towards him with the intent of capturing.
He moved with quick thinking and threw an Ash-shard at his feet and jumped through the corridor window behind him and onto the ledge below and then found another foothold to a lower floor and descended all the way to the ground and slid into a nearby patch of thick and dense trees. The Guards leaned out and saw nothing and blew a horn. "Damned bastards, i can't deal with reinforcements too". He ran through the patch and far from the dorms into the academic building. Guards were swarming it from all directions and he needed a distraction. He looked up the stairwell and remembered the alchemy lab. He ran up a floor and into the lab and grabbed 2 flasks. He took out his Ash-shard and poured salamander venom into it and plugged the flask with the shard. He waited for the guards to come close, once they were in range he jumped out of the window and flung the flask into the band of guards and fell onto a patch of wet mud. It hurt a bit, but there wasn't time to wait around.
The nearby guards patrolling outside quickly rushed in to investigate, giving Silas enough time to escape unnoticed and head to the South Gate. He dashed to the gate, after emptying the yard and immediately ducked into the bush beside him outside the gate. He took a few moments to catch his breath and scout the area before calling for Tormac "Tormac, you here yet?" Silas called out. Tormac answered "Here. What do we do now? Are we leaving?"
"No, not we. You. Go to Grytrand, and get some room and board for yourself and stay inside" Silas noticed the academy robe he was wearing "And tear that robe you're wearing, use it for spare cloth but don't use it as it is. They will catch you easier with that on you than off you. I'll catch up"
"What the fuck are you doing? Why are you staying back?" Tormac asked, worried.
"There's people in there who still need help. Go. I'll come back as fast as i can" Silas said and pushed him and turned back, walked towards the academy gate, with a Platoon and a noble on horseback facing him.
"Fuck you, your Lordship" Silas said making eye-contact with Baron Aldric Draemont on his horseback and bowing with courtesy.
