Following Firefly, Skipper and I arrive at orientation just in time. Skipper scoots quickly into an empty pouffle, and Firefly whirls around and settles gracefully on her head, in between her two horns. I go to sit in the pouffle to the right of Skipper, but suddenly I slam into something!
"Oh! Jeez! Sorry about that."
I look at the seat that I was trying to occupy, and my eyes are able to make out the transparent form of a dragon. Ugh. It's a Glass Dragon. Glass dragons have scales that look like, well, glass. There's some kind of thing that makes it so that you can't see their organs, and they come in colors or transparency. Looks like there just had to be a transparent one in the school. That's going to make things complicated, because, unless you concentrate, it's ridiculously hard to see a transparent Glass Dragon.
Luckily, there's another empty pouffle to the left side of Skipper, and I hurry to settle on that one. She saw the whole thing, and is shaking with barely suppressed laughter. I glare at her for a moment, then do a quick scan of the room. The two light and dark twins from outside are here, and so is Lotus's daughter. She's busy trying to rile up a group of dragons who seem to be half-asleep. She's really good at it, because as she keeps on talking, they get more animated.
As I look around more, I spot two dragons who seem to stand out from the crowd. They must be twins, because they have the exact same features. They both have a ruff around the sides and back of their heads, and long, feathery lines trail from their front legs to a little past their back legs. Their thin, whiplike tails lash and coil together in unison, and they both have a distinct bright white coloring. Their one difference is in the coloration. Their features are all outlined and highlighted by metaillic lines of coloring, but one of them has gold highlights and one has silver highlights.
I draw my gaze away from the two and aim my eyes at the podium. It's raised slightly, and a beautiful dragon, shimmering in a rainbow that looks like a holograph, is walking up onto it. Her sharp eyes and long, shimmery trail catch the light. She smiles at all of us for a moment, and then raises her voice to be heard over the last few dragons who haven't stopped chattering.
Scarlet of the Pyroflare family is just trying to navigate the ups and downs of becoming a teenage dragon, when she discovers that she's not just a regular fire dragon after all. Instead, she's an Emberwrym, the most powerful kind of fire dragon in the world-and the last of her kind. But will she manage to get through middle school with her powerful new abilities? Or will her raging flames get the better of her?
