A Love No Longer a Bet

The Intrusion of Privacy (and Heartbeats)

The Intrusion of Privacy (and Heartbeats)

Aug 26, 2025

Travis awoke to the sound of his alarm ringing the following day. As soon as he pushed his spectacles onto his face, he let out a groan and understood right away that he had nodded off while still wearing Jordan's jacket.

"Great. Now I smell like him," he said, sitting up and frowning at himself.

However, he folded it neatly and placed it next to his bed rather than tossing it into the laundry basket. He reasoned that it was only to keep it from wrinkling. That's all.

Travis rushed to school after a quick breakfast of instant noodles, hoping to get lost in the crowd as he always does.

Regrettably, fortune had other plans.

Since Jordan was already there.

Not at school, but right in front of Travis's run-down apartment complex, leaning against his car as if he were a celebrity in a movie. Sunglasses. In his pockets, he had his hands. A grin that forewarned danger.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Travis asked, his body still.

"Picking you up, obviously," Jordan answered, lowering his sunglasses just enough to see him.

"We're not—You can't just—You don't even know where I live!" Travis exclaimed.

"Clearly, I do," said Jordan, smiling even more.

Travis was stunned. "You STALKED me?!"

"Take it easy," Jordan said, raising his hands. "I didn't follow you. I asked people around. You know, folks gossip, especially when it’s me."

"That makes it WORSE!" Travis said, his face flushed.

"Get in. Unless you want to be late," said Jordan, unfazed, as he shrugged.

Jordan had already extended his hand and opened the passenger door for Travis before he could say anything else. As though it were the most normal thing in the universe.

For a brief moment, Travis just stood there on the sidewalk, his heart pounding like crazy. His apartment building was old and dilapidated, the neighbors were already whispering and peeking out of their windows. He disliked it when people stared at him. He despises it.

But then again... Jordan was waiting, even being calm and patient. As though he belonged there.

Travis bit his lip, advanced, and got into the car with a mumbled, "This doesn't mean anything."

Jordan followed him, laughing. "Yeah, anything that helps you sleep at night."

At first, the ride was silent—or, at least, Travis tried to keep it that way. With his arms crossed firmly, he maintained his gaze fixed on the window. However, Jordan's voice was calm and soft when he spoke.

"You didn't return my coat."

“I forgot,” Travis said, becoming rigid.

“You forgot, huh?” Jordan grinned at me from the side. “Or perhaps you just wanted to keep something of mine.”

"Wha—NO! Why would I—You're unbearable!" Travis exclaimed, his face blazing.

"Cute," said Jordan, with a deep, hearty chuckle.

Travis nearly choked.

After a long drive, Jordan parked in front of the school and gave him that irritating half-smile. “I'll pick you up later too. Don't try to escape.”

Travis leaped out of the automobile, slamming the door shut with more force than was necessary. His cheeks were on fire, his heart was pounding, and worst of all, he couldn't tell if it was from rage or something different.
