Echoes from the underworld

The Throne Room

The Throne Room

Aug 27, 2025

The Throne Room

The throne room was bathed in the soft glow of flickering torchlight, the cold stone walls casting long shadows. When Yume entered, Kasu Lucian, Demon Lord of the Underworld, sat upon his black iron throne, his royal presence commanding respect in the room. His silver eyes fixed on Yume, who stood before him, the ethereal figure casting long, flowing shadows that merged with the surrounding darkness. Bound by years of history, the two stood at the very heart of the Underworld—a place where even time seemed to bend.

Kasu's gaze lingered on Yume, and for a moment, his usually cold expression softened, as if something deep within him stirred. His voice broke the silence, low and almost wistful.

"You didn't come to my wedding, Yume," Kasu said, his tone carrying something unfathomable. "I didn't expect you to, but... I hoped you would be there."

Yume met Kasu's eyes, his expression neutral, but a flicker of sadness passed across his gaze. He didn't respond immediately, instead drawing a deep breath, his silver hair shimmering faintly in the dim light. At last, he spoke, his voice calm but edged with a certain sharpness.

"I was busy," Yume said, his words carefully measured, though weighted beneath. "With Asmodeus." He paused, lowering his gaze to the floor.

I didn't want to be there, to watch the one I love marry someone else, he thought. The raven demon could not say this aloud to Kasu; the thought remained unspoken, buried deep inside him.

Kasu's eyes narrowed slightly as he considered Yume. There was no anger in his gaze—only something resembling understanding, mixed with the faintest trace of regret. He knew what it meant to feel the sting of lost love, to be haunted by what could never be. But he said nothing of this, instead turning his attention elsewhere.

"I'm glad you're here now," Kasu said, his tone somewhat somber. "When Selene and I... when our son will be born. That you are here by my side mean a lot to me, more  than you know." His voice softened, the rare vulnerability almost imperceptible. "You can even give him a name, Yume. If you want."

Yume looked at Kasu, his heart heavy at these words. For a long moment, he remained silent, weighing the request. He had always respected Kasu, even while wrestling with his own unspoken feelings. A strange silence settled between them; neither spoke as Yume struggled to find the right words.

Finally, after a deep breath, Yume spoke, his voice quieter than before but steady. "Name him Draziel."

Kasu looked at him, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, his eyes sparkling with rare appreciation. "Draziel," he repeated, tasting the name on his tongue. "I like that." He leaned back slightly in his throne, letting the name sink into the room.

For a moment, the air felt different lighter as if the shadows themselves had shifted in response to their words. Yume's gaze held Kasu's, his heart heavy with unspoken emotions, but the bond they shared fractured though it was still remained. The tension in the room was palpable, yet there was a quiet understanding between them, an unspoken acknowledgment of the things they both carried.

"You have always been here for me, Yume," Kasu said softly, his voice mellowing slightly. "Even when I didn't deserve it." There was no demand in his tone, no expectation—just a simple truth spoken for the first time in many years.

Yume said nothing in reply, but something passed over his face perhaps sorrow, perhaps something else. He looked at Kasu one last time and gave only a silent nod. Without a word, Yume turned and left the throne room, swallowed by shadows as he disappeared.

Kasu sat in silence, his eyes following Yume's departing figure. His thoughts drifted to old memories and unspoken words. The name Draziel echoed in his mind he liked the name.

For a moment, Kasu allowed himself the luxury of imagining what might have been, before responsibility pulled him once again into the darkness.

Later the same day

The crackling sound of the open fireplace filled the otherwise silent room, the warm glow casting soft shadows on the stone walls.
The flickering flames danced, their light reflected in Yume’s deep, contemplative eyes as he sat on the soft black leather sofa. His thoughts were far away—memories, unspoken feelings. He leaned back against the red cushions, trying to calm the storm of emotions raging inside him.

The room carried a faint scent of wood and spices, and the fire’s warmth spread gently through the air. It was peaceful—but Yume felt anything but at peace. He had given Kasu and Selene’s son a name: Dalziel—a name he would never have the chance to call with tenderness, no matter how much he wished he could.

As he sat there, lost in thought, the soft sound of approaching footsteps pulled him from his daydream. Selene—Kasu’s wife, pregnant with Draziel—stood in the doorway. Her belly was round and full with their unborn child.

She wore a flowing red dress, the fabric catching the firelight as she walked toward the sofa.

With a gentle smile, Selene sat down beside Yume. Her presence was calming and comforting, despite the underlying tension between them. She looked at him for a moment, her gaze both curious and understanding.

“I like the name you chose,” Selene said, her voice soft but warm. “Dalziel… it’s beautiful. Fitting for Kasu’s an my son.”

Yume, surprised but relieved by her words, looked at her and gave a small smile. “I’m glad you like it,” he said quietly, his tone touched with gratitude.

Selene turned slightly toward him, studying his face for a moment. Her eyes were kind, but there was something else behind them—something that suggested she understood more than Yume was comfortable with. She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. “You’re in love with Kasu, aren’t you?”

Yume nearly lost his breath for a moment, his eyes widening at the unexpected question. His heart skipped a beat, the familiar weight of unspoken emotions tightening in his chest. He looked at her, unsure what to say, his surprise clear on his face.

“I… uh, yeah… how did you know?” Yume stammered, his voice nervous as he shifted uncomfortably on the sofa. His usual calm had vanished, replaced by an uncertainty he couldn’t hide when it came to Kasu.

Selene smiled gently. Leaning back slightly, she rested her hand on her pregnant belly. “It’s obvious, Yume. The way you look at him. The way your eyes soften when he’s near… it’s more than friendship.” She glanced at him with a soft, knowing expression. “It’s okay, you know. I’m not going to judge you for it.”

Yume’s heart sank, a strange mix of relief and shame washing over him. He had never imagined anyone would notice—especially not Selene, Kasu’s wife, the woman who held his place in Kasu’s heart. But sitting there, meeting her gaze, Yume realized Selene had always seen him more clearly than anyone else.

He looked down, unsure of how to respond, his fingers fidgeting nervously with the fabric of the sofa. “I… I didn’t mean for it to be like this,” Yume said quietly, the words slipping out before he could stop them. “But I’ve always… cared about him.” His voice faded, and he looked to Selene, searching her face for judgment—but all he found was understanding.

Her smile never faltered, and her eyes remained gentle. “I know,” she said softly. “I’m not angry. I think… in some ways, I understand you more than you realize.” She inhaled quietly, her gaze becoming distant for a moment. “Kasu has always been… complicated. He carries a heavy burden, and sometimes I wonder if anyone can ever truly reach him. But I believe he cares about you too, Yume. In his own way.”

Yume’s heart ached at the truth of her words, yet there was a strange, bittersweet comfort in them. He nodded, his gaze softening. “I don’t think I’ll ever really be with him… not the way I want.” He paused, taking a slow, steadying breath. “But I’ll always be there for him.”

Selene turned toward him, her expression growing more serious, though her eyes still held warmth. “Love isn’t always about being with someone the way we wish. Sometimes, it’s about being there when they need you most. And you’ve been there for him, Yume.”

They sat in silence for a long time, the only sound the gentle crackle of the fire. Yume’s thoughts churned like a storm, and Selene’s presence though calm stirred something in him he couldn’t quite explain.

Suddenly, Selene turned toward him. Her expression softened, and she studied him for a moment before reaching out. Her arms wrapped gently around his neck, pulling him closer. Before he could process what was happening, she kissed him.

The kiss was soft, hesitant like even she wasn’t sure why she was doing it. Yume’s heart pounded in his chest. The warmth of her lips lingered briefly before she pulled away, her eyes meeting his with an unreadable expression.

Yume blinked, his thoughts struggling to catch up with what had just happened. “Why did you kiss me?” he asked, his voice slightly strained, a hint of nervousness creeping in.

Selene took a quiet breath, her hands resting in her lap. She didn’t seem surprised by his question, though there was a flicker of uncertainty in her gaze. “I don’t know,” she said softly, almost as if trying to make sense of it herself. “I… I care about you. You make me feel calm… I’m in love with you, in a way. But I love Kasu more.”

Yume was quiet for a moment, processing her words. He didn’t know what to say. But finally, he whispered, “Are you going to tell Kasu that I’m in love with him?” His gaze was steady, but there was a flicker of vulnerability behind the question—one he had kept locked away for too long.

Selene didn’t hesitate. Her eyes softened with quiet sympathy as she met his gaze. “Of course not,” she said firmly. “As long as you don’t tell him about our kiss.” Her voice held no accusation, only a silent understanding.

Yume looked at her, her words sinking in. Then, a small breath. “Of course not. Thank you,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “For understanding.”

Selene’s expression softened even more, and she smiled at him. Her eyes, full of quiet empathy, held no judgment. “Of course, Yume. You’re not alone in this.”

She took his hand and placed it on her pregnant belly. Yume, still lost in his thoughts, didn’t realize what she was doing—until he felt it.

A small kick. His breath caught. He could feel the life within her the soft, rhythmic movements of Kasu’s unborn son, Draziel. For a brief moment, the weight of everything crashed over him. The life growing within Selene. Kasu’s love for her. And the love Yume would never receive.

Everything stilled for a moment. The fire crackled gently in the background as Yume’s fingers hovered lightly over Selene’s belly. The baby kicked again. Selene placed her hand over his, a gentle pressure grounding him, and Yume let out a soft breath, his eyes meeting hers.

“Draziel,” Yume whispered the name that had echoed in his mind ever since he gave it to Kasu’s son. It felt bittersweet and beautiful, a glimpse of a future that would never be his.

Selene nodded, her eyes never leaving his. “Yes. Draziel,” she repeated softly, a small smile playing on her lips as the baby moved again. “He’ll be a strong boy. And I’m sure Kasu will be a good father to him.”

Yume nearly broke. A lump formed in his throat as he swallowed hard, holding back tears. He said nothing, only nodded. His hand remained on her belly, feeling the life that stirred beneath his palm.

In that quiet moment, Yume realized that  he might never have the love he longed for, he wasn’t completely alone. Not as long as Selene was there, with her quiet empathy offering comfort in ways he had never expected.

One day later

The room was dimly lit, only the soft flicker of candlelight casting shadows along the walls.
Selene lay on the bed, her breathing sharp and uneven as she gripped the sheets beneath her, the pain of labor visible in every movement. Kasu stood at her side, his usually composed expression strained with worry. His strong hand held hers, his fingers trembling slightly as he offered whatever comfort he could.

Yume stood nearby—silent, yet present. His eyes never left Selene’s face. He could see the effort and strength in her eyes as she fought through the pain. He moved closer, gently taking Selene’s other hand, offering the same silent support Kasu did. She squeezed both their hands in return, drawing strength from them.

“You’ve got this, Selene,” Kasu murmured, his voice low but full of assurance. His usual control was beginning to falter. He glanced briefly at Yume, sharing a moment of understanding before turning his focus back to Selene.

“I’m here,” Yume said softly, his voice gentle but steady. “We’re both here.”

With one final, sharp cry of pain, Selene’s grip tightened. Kasu held her hand even more firmly, as though anchoring her with all he had. She turned to him, her eyes filled with exhaustion—but also with determination.
“Kasu…” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“I’m here,” he said gently, brushing her hand with his thumb. “I won’t leave you. Not now, not ever.”

The room fell into silence as Selene’s breaths quickened, her body tensing once more. The moment was both terrifying and beautiful life about to be born in the demon realm.

With a final, agonizing push, Selene cried out breathlessly and then, the first sound of life echoed through the room: the soft cry of a newborn child, Draziels cry.

Kasu held his breath, his eyes meeting Yume’s filled with awe and relief. The demon who had assisted in the birth, lifted the small child and handed him to Selene.

Kasu’s expression softened as he looked at his son. He couldn’t hold back the flood of emotion the joy and overwhelming love filling his chest.

Still holding Selene’s hand, Kasu gently reached for her cheek, leaning down to kiss her lips.

“We have a son. Draziel.” he whispered, voice thick with emotion.

Yume sat silently beside them. He looked at Kasu with quiet understanding. Despite everything, despite the pain, the complexities of their bond he could see the love Kasu had for both Selene and their child.

As Kasu held Selene close, now cradling their son in his arms, Yume knew he wasn’t part of the love they shared. But he also knew that the bond between them was something he would never truly grasp yet something he could never break.

Kasu turned to him, his eyes full of gratitude… and something else something deeper.

“Thank you, Yume,” Kasu said, his voice soft but sincere. “For being here.”

Yume nodded quietly, his heart heavy, yet full of quiet respect. “Always,” he whispered. Kasu pulled him into a hug and kissed him on the cheek.

Kasu Lucian's life is defined by loss, betrayal, and an unyielding thirst for power. Raised by his emotionally distant father, Draegon Lucian, Kasu was taught that love was a weakness and power must be earned through strength alone. This harsh ideology was enforced when Draegon killed Kasu's wife, Senora Lucian, to sever his emotional ties and weaken him.

Yume Zion is a Fox Demon and protector of Kasu Lucian, whom he has loved unconditionally since childhood, though his feelings remain unrequited. His loyalty to Kasu leads to emotional turmoil, especially as he navigates a passionate yet complicated affair with Asmodeus, the Demon of Lust.

Asmodeus, the Demon of Lust and Manipulation, is shaped by a history of obsessive and controlling relationships. He cannot separate love from domination, using affection as a means of power. His most recent obsession is Yume Zion, a powerful fox demon. What began as a manipulative game to seduce Yume quickly evolved into a deep, infatuated bond.
