Chapter 8
School Life - The Play (Part 2)
Where am I? Everything’s dark, my ears are ringing with silence…and am I under the water? But how can I still breathe?
I tried to swim towards the surface but I did not know where the surface was, and something was pulling me downwards as though a huge stone was tied to me.
Just when I thought I was dreaming, something that looked like an eye suddenly appeared.
Blue colour webbed around a black pupil, it stared at me along with my soul.
Zzzt!
A sudden spark sounded near me.
The eye moved to my side, revealing multiple sparks around me.
Sizzle!
The water started to get heated up by the spark. The blue illumination from it showed me whose eyes it was.
Unexpectedly,I found myself seated in a clean white corridor, Mom sitting beside me looking nervously.
Where are we? Why am I still in school uniform?
“You should go home, Ady is tired...” suggested someone that I am acquainted with.
It was Reid's mom. She wore a plain forest green coloured T-shirt, and saggy olive coloured cotton pants. She has a round face with few wrinkles, round eyes with medium rounded eyebrows. Her white skin, same as Reid, glowed under the dim light. Hair styled in long bobs till on her shoulder.
“I am very sorry what happened to Reid, I will take the whole responsibility” apologised Sir Abraham in a sad voice with concern.
Wait…am I in a hospital?
“It's not your fault Sir," comforted Reid’s Mom.
But I wasn’t focused on the conversation. I scanned around the corridor to find Yumi and Emily. I stood from the well sanitized steel chair and my injured right fist, which I forgot about, started to sting.
“Are you alright, Ady?” Mom whispered to me as she didn’t want to interrupt the conversation happening with Sir Abraham and Reid’s mom on the side.
“Mom, what happened?” I asked in distress.
“Where is Yumi?”
“You…You don’t remember?” Mom was taken by surprise.
I tried to remember the last thing that happened, but the only thing that I could recall was the conversation we had with Emily.
“You actually don't remember anything?” she asked again, with even more worry.
“No. Again mom, where’s Yumi and Reid!” I yelled, disturbing the corridor.
Sir Abraham and Reid’s mom stood there in shock from my impulse.
“You sure Aden?” said Dad– no Sir Abraham
Dad, that's right, where is he?
My thoughts filled up and questions started to arise.
“You sure you don’t remember anything, even the fact that you tried to hit me?” Asked Sir Abraham in a concerned and worried tone.
That question sounded like a bullet striking straight into my heart.
I did that? What the hell is happening to me lately.
I threw myself onto the steel chair. My hands on my head, Mom and others started to worry as they started asking many questions, but all I heard was murmuring. I was lost in my thoughts, ignoring the dream I had. My breathing suddenly started to become rapid, a headache stinged through my skull. But there were still many questions left to be answered.
What is happening to me lately?
Where is dad and Yumi?
And what happened to Reid?
Suddenly my head started to spin, the corridor seemed to bend in a spiral, my upper body was out of my control, eyes and heart started to sting, like a whole sword pierced straight into my heart.
“P-Please wake up…”
A very sweet female voice that sounded like a weeping angel called me out.
The next thing I knew I was resting in a hard, warm but harmless grasp.
My blurry vision couldn’t let me see the person, though I felt safe somehow, and eased my pain away.
“Maa- …. ink p—se sh-l- …sk— h-m” the voices sounded as 2 people talking at the same time. — Editor’s note: I don’t even know bro .·´¯`(>▂<)´¯`·.
Finally the dark engulfed me. The voice and pain went away. Peace and warmth spread through my body.

The light from the sun shone through the window. I felt a heavy but warm sensation on top of my chest. I lifted my right hand up to check what it was but I couldn't open my eyes from fatigue. It was fluffy and warm, and seemed to reduce the pain in my arm.
Meoww!
The weight shifted closer to my neck and I felt it lick my chin. I sat up straight, rubbing my eyes to see clearly as it jumped from me to the side of the bed. Its eyes are staring at me. The overgrown grey with black strips fur extended outwards, and the tail wiggled with excitement.
“Good morning Neco…” I said with my weak voice, still sleepy.
Meoww! He said.
I looked into the human sized mirror placed on the right side of the left wall of the room tilted slightly to face the window. Neco followed as he jumped up to the small cabinet placed near to the mirror and sat with his back 2 legs bent.
I stared at my dishevelled look in the mirror, my long hair messed up, shirt crumpled, so I decided to freshen up. I wore a plain oversized light brown T-shirt and a little bigger size long black track pants.
My hand, it still hurts, I thought to myself as I put on the clothes.
Meowww!
“Hey! You wanna get thrown out of the window?” I asked him as if he laughed at me.
The wooden shelf near the bed that was half of my height was already filled with books and it craved for more space. On top of it were 2 mini plants and a small watering can.
I might have to get a bigger shelf when I buy more books. If mom allows me that is.
The prices of hardcopy books have increased a lot, though they are more comfortable to read than the softcopy ones, and look good to keep on the shelf.
The forest green colour of the wall being struck by the reflecting light from the sun, the little sparrow chiruping outside, it made me feel as if I was in a forest.
I don’t know why, but a green environment puts me at ease. So I requested for my room to be coloured with green as the other rooms are painted with blue or white.
The wind blowing from the window made the calendar near it fall on the bed from the wall. I went to pick it up and the date of today surprised me.
It's only been 3 days?
Today was the 4th day of the start of school. That’s when my memories came back. All the events that happened in the past 3 days. The school opening, meeting Yumi, fighting with Jake, dinner at Yumi’s house and the fight with sir Abraham and Reid. I hung the calendar to where it was before and blitzed through the door.
Meoww!
When I reached the top of the stairs, Neco jumped up to my shoulder.
“When did I become your taxi?” I teasingly questioned him. I jumped down the stairs which lead to the living room of our house.
“Oh, your awake Ady.” Dad spoke as he rested in one of the single seated black couches in front of our TV. He was in his usual fire fighter uniform.
“Where have you been dad?” I asked him. Carrying Neco in my hands from my shoulder.
Dad let out a big sigh. He knows that I am angry about what happened at the dinner.
“I know what I did was wrong Ady, I am extremely sorry to embarrass you in front of Yumi and her family.” He explained.
I still won’t forgive him.
He leaned forward while his elbows rested on thighs.
“How about we go for an outing with her later? After I solve the forest fire case.” He asked.
Now he tries to comfort me after suddenly leaving, though it's been a while since we went for an outing.
“Well that's actually a nice offer, but why did you have to leave so suddenly that day?” I asked.
Suddenly his facial expression changed while he leaned back on the couch. His behavior was unusual, like he was scared of something.
“Thats something classified to us," he answered.
Meoww!
As Neco jumped down to the small glass table with his small black legs and sat among the newspaper and a very small artificial plant in a white plastic pot, I remembered why I blitzed here.
“Dad, where’s Yumi and Reid?!” I urged.
Mom blasted through the main door after hearing me. Neco turned his head in reaction.
“What happened?” She asked.
She had a dark green glove with black border worn in her hands and a black apron with dirt all over her body. Her hair was tied to a bun.
“Mom, what happened yesterday?” I asked her as I turned her way.
Dad stood up from the couch and walked to me.
“Don’t Worry, Ady, they are safe at home." He replied.
“But Dad, Reid was in the hospital yesterday.”
“He is alright, just he was tired”
“But…”
When I tried to speak, Dad rested his right hand on my shoulder.
“Look, Reid is a strong boy. You and I know that he will not get himself into any danger”
I hate to admit it but he is right.
“It's time for school, go and get ready Ady!” He finally ordered.
I stared at the clock that was attacked a little up from the TV on the wall and saw 2 black sticks pointing at 8 and 5.
IT'S ALREADY 8:25!
I ran to my room, took my uniform, and ran to iron my uniform on the big stone slab attached to the wall near the stairs.
“Ady! Food is ready!” yelled mom from downstairs.
“Coming!” I replied back.
I rushed to my room and took the towel that I hung behind the door. Then opened the door to the bathroom that was in the far left corner of the room.
After a hot shower, I dressed up and took the school bag which was hanging on the wall to the left of the door. And packed the books from my table near my bed. I looked at the clock on the wall of the hall on the second floor as I walked out of my room.
8:50. I still have time.
When I reached downstairs, my mom came out of the dining room in front of the opening of the stairs holding 2 pieces of egg sandwich . She changed her apron to the usual with red and white strips.
“Here you go” she handed the sandwich to me.
After eating one piece of bread and another one hanging from my mouth, I rushed to the main door where I found dad ready to walk out of the door dressed in his usual Uniform.
“Also Ady, you are participating in the play” Dad said as I put on my black school shoes.
“What do you mean?” I asked out of confusion.
“Your PE teacher asked us if we would let you participate in play,” Mom replied from behind.
That news struck me like lightning. I knew that senior Emily would do something like this.
But why is Abraham Sir included in it?
“Why did you guys agree to it?” I asked while I pushed through the main door with Dad.
Purr!
“Because we want you to have a good and better experience than you had in previous school.” Mom replied as Neco was resting in my Mom’s arms.
When I tried to reply, Dad grabbed me by my hand and dragged me to him. He slightly bent his neck to come closer to my ears.
“Yumi is also there…” He said with a smile that I feared.
“Dad! I told you it ain’t like that” I yelled.
“Can I also hear what my husband and son are talking about?” Mom asked from the door.
“Ah it's nothing, right Ady.” Dad stared at me with some denseness under those eyes.
“Yeah yeah…”
“But Ady, there is no other option, you should do the play.” My Dad ordered.
“Why?” I asked after walking out the black with golden flower design coloured gate big enough for a car to go through.
“Mom already told you about this, and this is our final decision.” Said Dad as he closed the gate behind him.
I let out a sigh after realizing that my free time was gone. Then suddenly a car in red with black lines came near our house.
“Alright my ride is here, Ady you do the play for the Talent Fest.” Dad commanded while walking near the car.
The car was large and heavy, and was more like a Jeep.
“Hey Captain, how's the morning going?” A man from inside the car asked cheerfully.
It was Justus we call him Jus for short he was Dad’s assistant or you can say Vice Captain of the Central Fire Force Team and Dad’s friend from Elementary school.
He had a little burn mark in his left cheek which he got during his duty in a house fire that happened in the same year I was born. His skin was hardened and tanned from the heat. My dad said he was slightly whiter when they were in Elementary school. His face is diamond shaped with round eyes, lips looked like it was stretched a bit with a tinny scar. Hair was a few centimetres long till eyebrows, styled with a perfect side part.
“It was good until you came.” Dad joked as he opened the door to the passenger side.
“I will take it as a compliment," said Jus.
“Hey Ady, is the new school good for ya, buddy” Jus popped his head out of the window. smiling
“It’s going good if I am on time, bye Jus‘ I replied.
When I started to walk towards the school, I saw Yumi in her uniform with her bag sagging on her back, running from behind the jeep.
“Ady, let's go together!” She yelled.
Not only me but everyone looked surprised. Well except Jus. My Dad, still outside of the door, stared at us in confusion. Neco was looking here and there to see what was happening.
She was different today, a bit more cheerful than usual. Her hair was nicely styled with braids long till her hip and a yellow flower pinned where the braids started. Her smooth and soft face showed a happy cheerful emotion with black eyes. Her skin shone like honey under the bright sun.
“What are you waiting for? Let's go, it's getting late.” Yumi ran to me after saying bye to my parents. She held my hands and we ran to the school.
On the way we greeted the granny and the policeman with the dog. It took us a while to reach the school, though we were a few minutes late.
The first period was Maths. It was boring as always. The only sound that was heard was the teacher's voice even the birds from the tree next our window were silent as a lizard.
After the bell rang sir Abraham came in to give out a sheet of paper which was the day to day planning for the Talent Fest.
The first day was filled with names of minigames that we were supposed to play for the opening day, The second day was Physical competitive events like singing or dance competitions. Third day Crafting, drawing competition. The fourth or the final day was where the play was hosted with prize distribution. Seeing the amount of participants, it's understandable that the Fest is 4 days long.
“Ady I heard you're in the play too. Which role are you playing?” Yumi asked me after reading the paper.
“I wasn’t planning on joining it but my parents told me to join and I don’t know anything about what role I am playing.” I replied.
Turning to Yumi, I asked. “What about you?”
“They didn’t tell me about roles either.” She replied while tilting her head to the side with a sad face.
She is so different today. Her way of talking and her activity around the class is different too.
“We will know after the lunch break I guess,” I replied.
The time went by fast. The bell for the end of the lunch break has rang.
Yumi took a slip from her bag and read it.
“School Auditorium…” She whispered.
“Ady, where is this?" She asked me when I was reading a book.
“Yeah, it is where the opening ceremony happened," I asked.
She went silent with an expression of awkwardness in her face.
“Don’t tell me you forgot?”
