A barrage of knocks shattered the once-silent slumber of the night. Terrain groaned as he slipped on his glasses and hauled his limp body out of bed.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” he grumbled, stumbling towards the door.
He cracked it open. Furna stood outside, wrapped in a blanket despite being immune to the cold. Her heavy eyes met his. A warm, quiet smile passed between them, and without a word, Terrain pushed the door wider, inviting her in.
Furna waddled past him, trailing the faint scent of cold air, and collapsed onto the couch.
“I’ll sleep on the couch this time,” she muttered, curling into herself.
“You sure?” he asked gently, watching her bury deeper into the cushions.
She nodded, tugging the blanket over her head and settling into her new spot.
Terrain set his glasses back on his nightstand and returned to bed. “We can swap rooms if you want.”
A muffled voice emanated from beneath the blanket. “That’s not why.”
He glanced towards her, brows drooping slightly, but let the answer stand. “Alright.”
The silence settled back in, and he let himself drift back to sleep.
“Do you like it here?” Furna whispered, breaking the silence.
He reopened his eyes. “It’s… a bit early to tell,” Terrain replied, rolling over to face her. “But it’s not bad.”
There was a quiet pause.
“It’s just… surreal,” Furna said softly as she pulled the blanket down from her face. “I never thought I’d actually become an Elemelon.”
Terrain smiled. “You’re doing great, though. I saw you training with Sky. Your combat skills have come a long way.”
“Yeah…” Furna’s voice trailed off as she shifted her gaze to the ceiling. “Sky’s good, isn’t she?”
“She is,” Terrain admitted carefully, unsure where the conversation was leading. “But, you know, she’s been training since she was little.”
Furna turned toward him, her eyes thoughtful. “She told me she wants to live up to Zephyr.”
She hesitated. “Do you… want to live up to Sandy?”
Terrain blinked. The question caught him off guard.
“Yeah,” he finally said. “… you can live up to her too.”
Furna’s expression softened, a small smile breaking through. “Yeah, I think I will.”
“Alright, then.” Her voice sounded lighter as she rolled back around. “Goodnight.”
Terrain watched her for a moment longer, a bit puzzled but glad she seemed at ease. “Goodnight.”
