The hours passed, and Ara tried to push through, focusing on her work. But no matter how much she tried to distract herself, something felt off. The past lingered at the back of her mind like a shadow, never quite leaving her.

Then, the bell above the door jingled, signaling the arrival of a new customer. Ara turned, her eyes automatically scanning the room. And that's when she saw her.

A woman had entered, and something about her immediately caught Ara's attention. She looked familiar, though Ara couldn't place where she had seen her before. Her confident stride, poised demeanor, and the way she glanced around the café with a sense of purpose-it all felt oddly reminiscent.

The woman approached the counter to place her order, and as she spoke to the barista, Ara's stomach twisted. She couldn't shake the feeling that this was someone she had known long ago. Her face... her voice... everything about her stirred memories of a time Ara thought she had buried.

As Ara was lost in thought, the woman suddenly turned and locked eyes with her. A familiar spark of recognition passed between them. For a second, Ara's heart skipped a beat, and her breath caught in her throat.

"Ara Jeon?" The woman's voice cut through the haze of Ara's thoughts, sending a ripple of tension through her. "It's really you, isn't it?"

Ara froze, unable to hide the shock on her face. The woman was standing right in front of her now, smiling faintly as if they were old friends reconnecting. But Ara's mind raced back to high school-to the modeling class they had both attended, to the bitter rivalry that had defined their relationship.

They had never been friends. If anything, they had been competitors, constantly outdoing one another in talent, beauty, and ambition. Ara had worked tirelessly to stay ahead, and Arianna had done the same.

"I remember you," the woman continued, her voice smooth and casual, but her eyes sharp with something deeper. "You were always ahead of everyone else. I guess some things never change."

Ara swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the cloth she had been using to wipe the table.

"Arianna?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Arianna's lips curled into a smirk. "Yes, that's me. It's been what-six years? I didn't expect to run into you here." She tilted her head slightly, eyes scanning Ara's café uniform. "I thought you'd be out there, doing something big by now. You always had that drive."

Ara forced a polite smile, but her heart pounded in her chest. "Yeah, it's been a while. I'm just working here for now, trying to make ends meet."

Arianna gave a small, amused hum, as if she didn't quite believe that. Then, her next words sent a sharp jolt through Ara's spine.

"You know... I always wondered why you dropped out of high school in the middle of our second year."

Ara's breath hitched.

The café suddenly felt too small, too suffocating. The murmurs of customers, the clinking of cups, the soft hum of the coffee machines-all of it faded into the background as those words settled deep into her bones.

Arianna didn't stop there. She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice, but her eyes gleamed with something cold.

"There were a lot of rumors, you know," she mused. "But I suppose you already know that."

Ara felt a wave of nausea rise in her throat.

She knew.

Arianna knew.

She knew about that night.

The rape.

The incident that had shattered Ara's world and forced her to leave everything behind-the modeling classes, her ambitions, her school, her so-called future. The whispers had followed her even as she disappeared, and somehow, they had reached Arianna too.

Ara's fingers curled into fists at her sides. "Why are you bringing this up?" she asked, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady.

Arianna let out a soft chuckle, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against the counter. "Oh, I'm just surprised, that's all. I thought we'd end up at the same university eventually, but I never actually saw you until now." She paused for a moment, watching Ara's reaction before adding, "I suppose things didn't go as planned for you."

Ara's blood ran cold.

"What are you talking about?" she asked, barely able to keep her voice steady.

Arianna smirked. "Oh? You don't know?" She tilted her head, feigning innocence. "We go to the same university now, Ara. Guess fate had plans for us to meet again after all."

Ara stiffened.

Arianna was at her university?

How had she never noticed? How had she managed to go this long without running into her?

Arianna studied Ara's reaction, a hint of satisfaction flashing across her face. "I was honestly surprised when I saw your name on the student list," she continued. "I thought you had completely disappeared after what happened."

Ara felt her stomach twist. The fact that Arianna knew about that night was already unbearable, but now she was saying they shared the same university?

"We're not in the same class," Ara muttered, gripping the cloth in her hand.

"Oh, I know that," Arianna said with a light laugh. "I'm in the Fashion Faculty, after all. And you..." She glanced at Ara knowingly. "You're in the Art Faculty, aren't you?"

Ara's pulse pounded in her ears.

"Yes," she admitted, though she wasn't sure why she bothered answering.

Arianna leaned against the counter, her expression unreadable. "Guess we're not competing anymore, huh? We've gone down different paths."

Ara wanted to believe that. She needed to believe that.

But Arianna's next words shattered any hope of a peaceful coexistence.

"Still," she mused, tapping a finger against her chin, "I wonder... does anyone in the Art Faculty know about your past?"

Ara's breath caught in her throat.

"I mean," Arianna continued, her tone deceptively casual, "you used to be the top student back then. Everyone admired you. And then, suddenly, you vanished. People like to gossip, Ara."

Ara clenched her jaw, forcing herself to stay calm.

She wouldn't let Arianna see her break.

Arianna sighed, straightening up. "Anyway, I won't keep you. I just thought I should say hello. It's been... a long time since we were on the same stage. Things have changed, haven't they?"

Arianna's words hung in the air, heavy with meaning, before she gave a small, almost pitying smile.

"Take care, Ara. I'm sure we'll run into each other again soon."

With that, she turned and walked away, her heels clicking sharply against the floor, her presence lingering long after she was gone.

Ara stood there for a moment, frozen in place. Her mind was spinning with the memories of their rivalry, and the sudden reappearance of Arianna had thrown her off balance.

She couldn't tell if this was just a casual brush with the past or a warning that her secrets were no longer safe.

With a deep breath, Ara tried to push the thoughts away, but she couldn't help feeling unsettled.

That conversation, those words, had shaken something in her-something she thought she had left behind.
