Humans are complex beings, bound by emotions and thoughts. As much as one does not want to admit it, flaws are inevitable. For a man to be perfect, he cannot be human. Jiwon believed that abandoning his humanity was the only way to achieve his goals, however, it was the opposite. Humanity is what made him succeed. Certain things carry a price, to Jiwon, it was losing himself in exchange for revenge. But after revenge, what happens? How is one supposed to feel? Is it the end, or simply a beginning to a life where he can finally overcome the past? Sometimes things aren’t as simple as we’d want them to be.
Year 2011, Incheon, South Korea
The sound of a car can be heard approaching on a quiet road. It’s 11:46 pm, nearing midnight. The salty and fishy smell of the ocean is carried along with the waves that climb up the rocky cliffside. In the car, it was Jiwon’s parents.
“Honey, are you sure that officer is trustworthy? Can he handle this?” - Jiwon’s Mother
“Yes, I contacted him right now, we will be meeting in an old factory” - Jiwon’s Dad.
“What if he takes the flash drive and gives it back to those bastards?!” She began to panic in the passenger seat, biting her fingertips in anxiousness, nervously scrolling through her contacts, not knowing whom she was trying to call.
“He won’t! If there is only one cop in this whole damned country who isn’t corrupt, it’d be him.” - Jiwon’s Dad
“My baby is home alone, he must be scared..” - Jiwon’s Mother
“Don’t worry, if we don’t do this right now, they’ll come for all of us.” - Jiwon’s dad
As Jiwon’s parents’ car entered the intersection, a garbage truck ran the red light, colliding straight into the left side of the car. The road was by a steep cliff leading into the cold ocean, where his parents now reside. Jiwon wasn’t there, but he couldn’t help but imagine it. Every cold night, he’d see that horrifying scene in his dreams. It must’ve been cold and scary. Drowning deeper and deeper as water seeped through the windows.
His parents were a company couple, holding valuable positions in the biggest investment corporation in South Korea at the time. They were on their way to deliver a flash drive containing evidence that their company is illegally funding a leading political candidate in exchange for political favor. They had discovered that there was something sketchy happening behind the scenes. They investigated the company, gathered intel, and compiled it all in a flash drive.
Jiwon was only 14 at the time, and he lost his parents overnight, completely oblivious. He moved into his grandmother’s house and inherited his parents’ wealth. When Jiwon turned 17, his grandmother passed away, and in her will, she revealed to him that his parents had buried an envelope in the backyard. It contained a letter and a copy of the flash drive his parents were delivering that night. In the letter, his parents wrote everything that they discovered, and who they were meeting that night. They had known that something could have happened to them, yet.. They went anyway. Was that bravery or foolishness? Whichever it was, Han Jiwon had slightly despised his parents for that decision, playing a hero? Leaving their only child behind? Was it worth it all? But he couldn’t ignore all their efforts, even if they were pointless.
That candidate became a renowned political figure, but no one knew the secret he was hiding, nor about the investment company that continued to climb higher and higher. Jiwon sent the flash drive to the detective his parents were trying to meet that night, it was none other than Detective Lee Seung-min.
Taking them down wasn’t enough for Jiwon, so he surpassed them. The company was liquidated and put up for auction. Jiwon was able to buy it due to his parents’ inheritance. His parents weren’t ordinary employees; they were the founding members of the company. Jiwon’s mom, Park In-ah (박인아), was the Chief Financial Advisor, while Jiwon’s dad, Han Tae-jun (한태준), was the Chief Investment Officer. They were both significant shareholders in the company. For Han Jiwon, buying an HQ like this is not difficult. He renamed the company to AX Investment Corporation, and it eventually became the most prominent Investment company in the country. However, that wasn’t enough; that’s when Nightly Orbitals came into the picture.
Jiwon’s revenge wasn’t the end of the hatred of what took his parents away, corruption. Getting rid of one or two wasn’t going to put an end to this occurrence. He sought to uproot them, crush them, kill them, or whatever it had to be to end them all. But even for someone as intelligent as Jiwon, this was not something he could do on his own. Over a span of 2 years, he gathered all the Nightly Orbital’s executives to form a secret organization whose only purpose is to get rid of corruption. No matter who the target was.
Han Ji-won is the young CEO of AX Investment Corporation, the largest investment Corporation In South Korea, and a secret agency called Nightly Orbitals that uproots corruption within politicians and large enterprises. He is a calculated and cold individual, unable to outrun his traumatic past. As a result, he suffers from extreme depression and does not seek the means to overcome it, believing that he is unworthy of healing. However, Kang Hae-in, a painter and a neighbour, suddenly disrupts Ji-won's life due to a misunderstanding. In a world built on power plays and fragile trust, can vulnerability be anything but a weapon?
