Several women who stood close to the entrance hall bowed as the doors swung open, upon realizing who came through though they just as quickly stood straight and went back to whatever they were doing before. Some of them were cleaning, others passing through, most of them pretending like they didn't see anyone coming in at all.
Sieglinde walked up the hall's staircase with her head hanging low, staring at the floors to avoid the eyes of strangers in uniforms. The staff of the Neapolitan mansion is mostly made up of city dwellers, so she didn't even know the names of the people constantly scurrying in her own home. What she does know however is that they're avoiding her on purpose, every single one. She's made attempts at trying to get close to some, but it is clear they never want anything to do with her. Perhaps they've been instructed to stay away, perhaps they just plain dislike Sieglinde for reasons she can't imagine…Or perhaps, city dwellers are just natural jerk wads.
There was no one in the office room, nor in the master bedroom. In the living room hall were another batch of maids gossiping and giggling. It seems like Sieglinde's parents weren't home yet.
They said they'd be back shortly after the school term started but it's been multiple weeks since then. They haven't called, no letters have been sent either. Lin was starting to worry, but just this morning she had received an e-mail from her brother that said they were fine, the airports over in England are just having trouble due to a weather crisis.
It made her glad, but also really, really mad. Why did she have to receive a e-mail from her brother to find out whether or not her parents are still alive? Is every phone line in England also having trouble or something?
The journal, that weird girl she saw and now the reminder of severe memory loss, Sieglinde's head felt like it was burning as her head continued to spiral. The last year at Sellavie, Lucia moving away, her parents far away in Europe…
She grabbed the chair of her vanity desk and threw it out the window, throwing it far enough that it reached the garden pond. A gardener who had been splashed looked towards her window and sighed.
Perhaps the staff have received a call but didn't tell Sieglinde on purpose to rile her up…on purpose. Adults are all like that in her eyes, they're pathetic and rely on those weaker than them as punching bags. Somewhere in life comes a cut off point where basic human empathy ends, all you desire from that point is to see the tears of those you view as lower on some sort of invisible totem that dictates social laws. Again, those are all her opinions of how the world supposedly works.
Sieglinde grabbed hold of the mirror and pushed it down to the floor, hundreds upon thousands of glass shards scattered to the floor as the blonde girl jumped on top of the fallen over vanity, jumping up and down hard enough that the broken glass crunched beneath the wood.
Sieglinde grabbed the door handle of her closet, pulling and pulling. Her foot slammed against the wall to strengthen her pull. After a few minutes, the door partially ripped off. She held that piece above her head and threw it against the wall.
She was not done yet, the next thing she reached for was her bedpost…
Outside of Lin's room, a group of maids had gathered, most of them sighing in the same way the gardener had done. One of the newer maids tried to reach for the door, perhaps hoping to calm the young girl down, but she was quickly pulled back by her superior. The older woman simply shook her head as everyone continued staring at Lin's door.
By the time Lin had finally calmed down, the sun had long set and even the street lamps outside stopped shining. Sieglinde changed into a nightgown and let her hair hang loose. She took a look out the window, careful to avoid any spiky leftover pieces from when she broke it open.
She could see the moon in it's third quarter phase high above, while below she could see Sunshine, her classmate, who was wandering out alone at night. Even lower, she saw the mansion's garden. There stood a man who was still busy trying to fix the pond she had thrown a chair into earlier. By coincidence the man had looked up and saw Sieglinde staring at him. She quickly hid; her knees suddenly felt weak and her body slid down to the ground.
The blonde girl buried her head into her knees, hugging herself tightly as she sat there in the corner of her ruined room.
Glass still littered the floor, as none of the maids dared to go in with Lin still in there. Everything was broken or shattered, scratched up in some way.
It was painful, it's going to hurt even more soon if Lucia was telling her the truth.
Sometime next year there is a chance Lucia will move far away, to Italy. There is absolutely nothing Sieglinde could do about that.
…Actually she could, if she asked Luc she might stay by simply not going along with her mother's plans, that's a possible action. However: it would also be unfair. Italy seems like a beautiful place, Lin has never been there herself but she has no doubts that any town over there is probably ten times more exciting than Berrymarrel.
She doesn't want Lucia to throw away this chance. Moving somewhere new and reuniting with family overseas, that just seems too wonderful to give up on just because they won't get to see each other everyday from then on.
They could still call and send mail, it's not like they'll completely lose contact. Sieglinde just won't be able to walk side by side anymore on their way to and from school. She won't get to sit next to her in class and watch as she slowly falls asleep. They won't be able to hang out during lunch, where they'd sneak off to the empty pool and chat down at the bottom of the hole. Sieglinde would be alone, there would be none other in this town that sees Lin as a genuine person and friend.
Sieglinde thought back to a wish that entered her head, a wish that seemed too selfish, too unreal, too far to grasp for someone like her. This time, she didn't push these thoughts away, she didn't have the energy to fight back against it.
What if there was someone else? Someone besides Lucia.
What if Lin made a new friend? Someone who genuinely likes her, loves her even…
