Chapter 6.
He's not the same.
Tomás had insisted that what they'd been studying for years probably wasn't the same person who had attacked him in the past. They simply didn't coordinate. He hadn't sensed why he now looked lost.
He even went so far as to confirm that this was why no one wanted to talk to him, because he was an imposter. But for Damian, this wasn't true. The man was blindly convinced that he was the same man, only he was planning something big and had to put on a pitiful front in front of the world to, as always, mislead people about his true nature and make himself look like the victim.
But this time the trick wouldn't work out perfectly, and although Tomás supported him, he also doubted it was the same person. At least his children weren't alienated, because as far as he could tell, the Doctor had given them a first-class education, something almost no one who wasn't privileged could access in the country.
However, he had given them the best he could, and the fact that they weren't even able to look at him or even say, "Hi Dad, ¿how are you today?" left much to be desired...
Even though they were teenagers, almost adults, there was no denying the situation: it wasn't the same person. It was impossible for it to be. But if he kept repeating this to his friend, he would tell him that he was against justice, the common good, and society because he would be supporting a murderer instead of the victims.
And to avoid falling for that kind of provocation, he was simply helping him, perhaps to entertain him by integrating bombs into cyborgs or learning basic cybersecurity.
Tomás understood his friend's feelings perfectly, but he also used common sense. People don't change overnight in less than ten years, to a point where not even your own children can recognize you as someone who, in his glory days, practiced his profession.
He couldn't simply refuse to have 5 minutes of fame and recognition, enjoying his narcissism again... he couldn't simply stop putting on a good show so everyone would talk about him...
Something had definitely happened in those ten years for him to now act in such a strange way. Perhaps, he had done something so traumatic that not even his own children would forgive him, or he had hurt one of them during that time, and that was why he was rejecting them.
But he couldn't just confirm it, much less in a crazy and hasty way. He had to continue studying it with his friend because now he was part of this and a fundamental part of the side of justice...
That's why he couldn't give up and abandon the mission, because even if it was a fantasy, it was entertaining for them, although they wouldn't know how the doctor would react if he arrived to find out they've been watching him for 10 years, that they have photographs of him from different angles: walking, rolling around in his wheelchair, talking to himself, and losing his temper with no one around him...
That's why, perhaps, he personally believed the man was suffering from dementia and the children had started mistreating him to get their hands on his fortune. Many people do that, so among the rich, it shouldn't be so strange that their own lineage does it…
