Chapter 7.
I'm not going to do it.
For years, Nathalie had visited Patrick, hoping he'd empathize with their son. After all, he was her only child. But the man was rude and grumpy. He always told her he didn't want to see him.
Until one moment, she had the brilliant idea of telling him she could give him the last name Bardot if they got married and he lived with the boy. But the words were harsh: a resounding no…
Although she had been married and divorced in the past, she had never lost hope that he would fall in love with her. But since they had returned from that strange vacation that Caesar, Brianna, Patrick, her sister, and her partner had taken, something had changed.
Even her own sister was acting strange, and it wasn't a strange thing they couldn't deal with, it was something else, something that didn't allow her to understand what had happened on that vacation before Caesar's marriage…
She didn't understand. Maybe, it was true that sometimes what you long for doesn't long for you, but he only had eyes for Brianna, and even though she wasn't supposed to speak to him, she was the one he asked about as soon as she arrived.
That's why he'd offered her his last name with a marriage between them. There shouldn't be love, just a union. But even with that, she didn't get it. She simply wasn't who he expected. But at this point in his life, when he's already lived at least half of it, ¿what could she lose by begging him and letting him know that even if she wasn't the one he chose, she'd always be willing to help him, even for a few minutes of her time?
"Sometimes it's better to let go of what you don't want to keep."
On the other hand, it wasn't that Patrick was willing to reject Nathalie, but rather that he wasn't willing to face her with that disgusting and pathetic body she had now; ¿How could he possibly confront Brianna?
She was trained to kill without powers, and the time the genetic alteration had lasted in both of their bodies was just a bonus, a small helper in his career. But he needed the Defiler as much as the heavens needed the sun, because he had always been the Defiler, and without him, he was nothing…
The madness they'd told him about him coming from a king who probably died somewhere hidden, because he was sure there was no way to cheat life without giving something to death, impossible…
That's why he just lived, challenging fate until it appeared, if it really existed, but he only remained as someone mentally unwell. The boys themselves kept a safe distance from him, almost as if he had the plague on his body. ¿Or maybe he did, and he just hadn't realized it?
