INT. GAVRI & CALLIE'S ROOM
An Hour Later...
Gavri sits on his bed, elbows on his knees, hands on his chin. His foot taps anxiously. Callie paces back and forth in the same spot.
Callie
You have to do it.
Gavri
(Resignant.) Why? I shouldn't even be here. Turp should have brought his 'chunkies'.
Callie
(Resolute.) He brought you, you're here, you should go for it. You'll never see an opportunity like this again.
Gavri
You heard Heinz, it's blood money. It's unethical.
Callie
No, blood money is what got him through the forties. Now he makes random crap, like hair-dryers-
Gavri
Hair-gel.
Callie
-exactly! That's junk money, from suckers.
She pauses. He gestures off his chin, like, 'did you hear what you just said?'. She shakes her head.
Callie
(Feeling guilty.) You know what I mean.
Gavri
What do you care? This doesn't affect you.
Callie
(Indignated.) Oh, ACTUALLY?
Calliophie steps up to Gavri, lowering herself to meet him at eye-level.
Callie
(Pointing at her chest.) I'm the one who's gonna be watching Harley's baby, day in and nights out. You think she has an ounce of maturity in her body?! You think Turp does?!
Gavri
(Flinching.) Not really, so what?
Callie
(Pointing at Gavri.) So if YOUR dead weight isn't hanging around on a reporter's salary of two bucks and a pat on the back, feeling bad for itself while -I- make sure that baby sees its first birthday, then YOU and -I- don't have a problem, do we?!
Gavri
(Looking down.) I can make rent.
Callie
(Unconvinced.) Only if your burnout roommate pitches in.
Gavri
(Lamenting.) Actually, I usually end covering his half.
Callie
Not helping your case, you're supposed to be able to stand up to shit like that. You know, as a man?
Gavri
(Bitter.) I've been told that's what I am, yeah.
Callie
(Not getting into it.) Whatever. The last thing I need is two kids to nurse, on behalf of their emotionally-stunted parents. I don't need Miserable Uncle Gavri, so piss off, and go be sad on your own!
Gavri
(Irritated.) What do you know about my parents?
Callie
(Accusant.) I've met Aditya and Priyanka. He's treated you like an employee since day ONE. And when was the last time you saw your grandmother smile? When did you last see her face? When has anyone?
Gavri
(Realizing something.) ...anyone?
REEL CHANGE:
INT. THE ANAND HOME, KITCHEN
Priyanka stands at the counter, washing dishes. Out the window, the sun sets. The moon rises. The sun sets. Leaves fall, winter comes, spring blossoms, Priyanka doesn't move. She just keeps washing dishes. Calliophie's voice barely reaches Gavri in his dream world.
Callie
(Voice-over.) It's so obvious where you got it from. She's not okay, Gavri. And neither are you.
REEL RETURN
Gavri shakes his head, tears in his eyes.
Gavri
(Voice cracking.) ALRIGHT! I'll do it. Are you happy now? Doctor Vida?
Callie
(Hands at her hips.) You promise? You'll do it today?
Gavri
(Cooperative.) Yeah, I'll go sign the contract.
Gavri sighs, hands on his forehead, and leans back into bed, legs still hanging off the side.
Gavri
And then when this is all done, I'll go away forever, like you said.
Calliophie grabs a drink from the mini-fridge, ice-cold beer. She cracks it with an opener.
Callie
(Unacknowledging.) Now, that's just the clinical depression talking.
A moment of reprieve as Callie sips at foam. Gavri takes a deep breath, and lets it out.
Gavri
Do you really think Turp and Harley are that bad?
Callie stands in the doorway.
Callie
Everyone's a genius when they're relaxed. But when the pressure's on... they'll be lucky if they can tell the orange juice from the bleach.
Calliophie leaves, closing the door behind her.
EXT. LUNERA HOTEL, OUT FRONT
An Hour Later...
Gavri steps out the doors, dressed in his office clothes. He takes a breath of fresh air, and adjusts his tie. He looks around for a cab, but there are none – just people walking. He spots a green buggy parked close by, with '$5 TOURS' spray-painted on the side in white. There doesn't appear to be a driver. That's when Gavri hears it.
Man
OOOHHHWEE!!
Next to Gavri, a young Hawaiian man is pissing in a bush in front of the hotel. He sighs as the water splashes audibly on the ground. Count another for the 'Hawaiian shirt club', his being green with beige cargo shorts.
Man
Hey, man. You want a tour?
Gavri
Uhhh... can you take me to the Astor Foundation?
Man
You got five bucks?
Gavri
Yeah, right here.
Gavri reaches into his seat pocket for his wallet, and pulls out a fiver. The man takes it, and offers his hand. Without thinking, Gavri shakes it.
Man
I'm Spinner Likeke, nice to meet you.
Spinner walks to the buggy, but the view lingers for a moment on Gavri, who frowns at his hand. Spinner climbs into the driver's seat, and pats the passenger seat cushion just as Gavri tries to climb into the back, only to realize it's not a four-door vehicle. Gavri looks up, walks around, and gets in next to Spinner. Spinner starts the engine, and the buggy moves.
Gavri
If we could just go straight there, that'd be-
Spinner
Relax, man. You'll get there. What time you need to be?
Gavri
The sooner the better-
Spinner
Perfect, I can show you around first.
Gavri looks at Spinner, concerned. Spinner grins.
Spinner
Relax. You're not checking your watch, so I know it's not time-sensitive.
Gavri
I don't have a watch.
Spinner
You paid for a tour, so trust me. You won't get this experience from a travel agency.
Gavri sighs, and shrugs.
Gavri
Okay, what the heck? Why not.
Spinner
That's what I like to hear! Sit back, and enjoy the ride.
Hawaiian-inspired lounge jazz plays in a montage of scenery, as Spinner drives Gavri around the town.
They drive by the public beach, where families are playing with their kids, and girls and guys in swimwear watch one another.
They slowly pass a grocery store called 'SALT & WATER', and Spinner waves to a guy unloading from a food truck. He waves back, and drops a crate of pineapples. Akamu yells at him from behind, and then yells at Spinner. Embarrassed, Spinner speeds off.
Along the park trail, Gavri turns his head as girls his age practice hula together. A few look their way, and he blushes.
Spinner takes them through a forest road on the outskirts, where lush tropical plants hang shade over them, and birds fly among the tree branches. They stop at a little lot on the cliff-side, and look through binoculars out at the sea. The view hangs over them for a moment, at a wide distance, showing off the whole cliff-side, and the watery horizon. Spinner hangs his arm around Gavri and noogies him like a buddy, and Gavri shoves him off playfully. They laugh.
EXT. THE ASTOR FOUNDATION – LATE AFTERNOON
Spinner's buggy pulls in front of the Astor building, stark white and even bigger up close. Gavri looks up at it, and raises his eyebrows. He gets out of the buggy, and walks to Spinner's side.
Gavri
Thanks, man. I was crazy nervous, I really needed that.
Spinner shakes his hand again.
Spinner
Any time, cousin.
Gavri
(Shaking his head.) I don't live here-
Spinner
(Laughing.) It's just an expression, don't freak out. Everybody here is ohana, as long as they respect the islands.
Gavri
(Nods, smiling.) Oh, okay. Awesome.
Spinner
You should really get a watch, by the way.
Spinner flashes his watch, black and silver with a black leather band. It's nice.
Gavri
(Nodding.) I will.
Spinner
Good luck with your job.
Gavri
You too, with yours.
Spinner's buggy pulls from the sidewalk. Without looking back, he yells.
Spinner
MAHALOOOO!!
Gavri waves him off as he drives down the street. Then Gavri faces the white monolith again, and walks through the front door.
