Chapter 8 – Faith is Fire
Day 5 Post-Breach
Wasteland Corridor – Southern Carpathian Borderlands
The air was dry, the land silent.
Mireya had stopped counting hours. She only counted breaths.
Beside her, Kaito limped with growing difficulty. His fever had returned. Whatever the demon had done inside him… it hadn't left quietly.
They walked a crumbled road once belonging to a satellite defense route — broken pylons leaned like gravestones, each etched with vines and ash. The sky above was the color of rotted silver, lit by lightning that didn’t strike and clouds that didn’t move.
They passed a roadside chapel, mostly collapsed, its stained-glass window somehow unbroken — a single, colorless figure standing with arms outstretched in cracked silence.
Kaito stopped and stared at it.
“She looks like she’s waiting for something.”
“She always was,” Mireya said quietly. “They built places like this for the forgotten. Even gods need somewhere to rest.”
Later – Makeshift Survivor Camp
They found it tucked into a canyon, hidden beneath thermal netting: a cluster of tents, old fires, terrified faces.
No one smiled. No one spoke unless spoken to.
Survivors, mostly children and elders. No weapons. No power. One man — barely out of his teens — stood watch with a rusted blade and a single flare.
The camp’s leader, an older woman named Nema, allowed them in cautiously.
“Don’t speak too loudly,” she said. “The wind listens now.”
Mireya helped Kaito to a cot while scanning the camp. “Why stay here? You should keep moving.”
Nema shook her head. “There’s something in the hills. Something the demons don’t cross. We don't understand it, but... it's safer here than anywhere else we've been.”
Kaito stirred. “It’s not the terrain. It's someone.”
That Night — The Boy and the Flame
The firelight burned low. People huddled in silence.
Then, distant screeching. A haunting, echoing cry — too many voices woven into one. A patrol. Close.
Children whimpered. One girl began to sob.
A young boy — no older than ten — stepped forward.
He was silent. Thin. Eyes far too old for his face. He stepped to the edge of the camp and lifted both arms.
“Get him back!” someone whispered.
But Mireya watched. She saw something in his posture — not madness. Not defiance.
Conviction.
The wind began to shift. Not naturally. Not randomly.
It gathered around him.
His eyes closed. Lips didn’t move. But the ground shivered beneath his feet.
Then came light — a thin, white-blue flame rising from his palms. It hovered, gentle as a breath, then stretched into the air in a slow spiral.
The screeching stopped. The wind howled.
Then… silence.
When Mireya moved forward, the boy collapsed.
She caught him before he hit the ground.
His skin was cold, but peaceful.
He never said a word.
But every demon within miles retreated.
Later – Around the Campfire
Nema knelt beside the sleeping boy, hands shaking.
“He’s never spoken,” she whispered. “Not once. But when the first ones came — the shadows — he just raised his hands and... they stopped. Like they were afraid.”
“Not afraid,” Mireya murmured. “Something deeper.”
She looked up at the shattered stars.
“Something they don’t understand. Or something they thought was gone.”
The Next Morning – The Journey Resumes
Kaito woke with more color in his skin. Mireya explained what had happened.
“Elemental control,” she said. “No science. No circuitry. Just belief.”
He stared at his hands.
“I felt something last night,” he admitted. “Like heat behind my ribs. Like a match that wasn’t lit.”
“You’re changing,” Mireya said. “We both are.”
Before they left, Nema gave them a direction: an old monastery further east, said to be untouched. No one who went there returned — not because they died, but because they didn't want to leave.
“They say a woman lives there now,” Nema said. “A healer. But her touch burns demons like fire.”
Far Away – Vorrash Sees the Fire
Inside the Dominion Core, Vorrash stirred.
He had seen the boy.
He had felt the flame.
His eyes flickered.
“It begins,” he hissed.
“The old blood answers.”
“The Saints return.”
