Lewiston Lee: All the Lost Boys

Tensions in the Bar

Tensions in the Bar

Sep 24, 2025

Lewiston had gotten a room for Archie directly across from him. He opened the door and let his client in. Archie walked in and looked around. It was amazing how similar it looked to Lewiston's own room, but he didn't care enough to do a one to one comparison.

"I hope this will suffice," Lewiston said as Archie continued to look around.

"I don't see why I can't stay in my own home." Archie grumbled.

"Because we're going to spend a lot of time together if we want to get you off these charges. And I'm not going to stay at your house."

Archie mumbled to himself after Lewiston said that. He gave the room one more look around.

"Well it's a lot nicer compared to where I have been staying," Archie said as he looked back at Lewiston. "So, yes. This will do nicely."

"Good," the lawyer said as he began to close the door. "I would like to go over the particulars of your case. So if you'll just take a seat-"

"Not right now. I'm tired." Archie interrupted as he sat down. Hand over his eyes.

"Your trial is in two days. I would like to know what I'm getting into now." Lewiston informed.

"And you will. Look!" Archie finally made eye contact with him again. "How about you go down to the bar downstairs. Let me at least wash up and I'll meet you down there. We can get something to eat, maybe some drinks and then we can go over the case. How does that sound?"

Lewiston just stared at him. No emotion on his face whatsoever.

"Please. Be a good half breed and listen." Archie said with an air of authority.

Lewiston did not leave because he was told to. Lewiston left because if he did not, he would have beaten Archie Cummings to death with his bare hands. He made his way downstairs where at the end of the staircase he was immediately welcomed by the bar. The bartender greeted him with a smile and asked if there was anything he needed. Lewiston held up one finger and simply stated, "gin."

The bartender nodded and began pouring Lewiston a glass as he leaned against the bar and stuck a cigarette in his mouth. Lewiston began to look around the establishment. He wasn’t looking at anything particular as his glance went from oil lamp to table, to whatever else caught his eye. There was going to be only one thing that was going to catch his attention, and he found it. Or rather, her.

She sat alone at a table near the middle of the saloon, but favoring towards the door. She dressed in a deep red dress and had begun to take off her white gloves. Her strawberry blonde hair was done up in a tight bun that helped compliment the sharp edges of her face. Resting on her table was a lone glass of beer that she grasped by her bare hands that were finally free from bondage of her gloves and she took a drink. Once she placed the glass back on the table, she pulled out a cigarette case and opened it.

Seeing that as his sign, Lewiston lit up a match and brought it to the cigarette in his mouth. The sound of the match brought the woman's attention up to Lewiston who made strong eye contact. Neither blinked. Neither broke their gaze.

A glass of gin was set down beside Lewiston. Without looking at the bartender, Lewiston asked, "Is she here with anyone?"

The bartender looked over and saw the woman. He looked back at Lewiston and said, "no." With that, Lewiston grabbed his glass and walked over to her table. She didn't smile, but he could tell that she approved of him approaching. By the time he made it to her table, she had an unlit cigarette in her hand and with the other hand, she put her cigarette case away.

"I see that the lady needs a light." Lewiston said. She glanced down at her cigarette and then back up to him as he asked, "May I?"

She leaned forward as he struck a match and lit the end of her cigarette and she took in the first few puffs. After it was lit, she leaned back and said, "Thank you."

"Mind if I sit down?"

"Be my guest," she said with a smile.

He sat down across from her. The smoke from their cigarettes beginning to intertwine in the air.

"What's your name?" Lewiston asked.

"Eva Harper."

"Miss or Mrs.?"

"Mrs." She said in an unwavering voice.

"I see."

"But," she responded with a little bit of a pause. "My husband died."

"Sorry to hear that."

"Are you really?"

"Not really," Lewiston said with a smile. "Gives me a chance to share a drink with you. Sorry! Where are my manners? My name is-"

"I know who you are," Mrs. Harper interrupted. "You're that fancy lawyer who came into town."

"Fancy?" Lewiston asked, liking the sound of that. At least how she said it.

"That hat of yours says it all. It's a nice little signature piece that tells people who you are." She stated. With her hand that was holding the cigarette, she motioned to herself and asked, "In your opinion, do I have a signature piece that tells you about me?"

Lewiston leaned forward. He looked her over as she sat back and let him. Finally, he stopped and stared real hard at her eyes.

"Your eyes," he said.

"And what do they say about me?"

"They scream," he paused as he continued to study her, "trouble."

"Does that scare you?"

"Not really," he answered, letting the smoke pour out of his mouth from the last puff he took. "I'm attracted to trouble."

She gave him a smile that looked like a million dollars. If all his schooling taught him one thing, it was how to talk. He knew he had her and as long as he didn't do anything foolish, he couldn't lose. Too bad the saloon had to bring in more visitors.

The door swung open and a man walked in, immediately catching Lewiston’s attention. He was strong and intense. He looked around the saloon and when he couldn't find the person he was looking for, he walked over to the bar. The door swung open again and there was another man. Another strong and quiet type who walked past Lewiston and sat in the corner of the saloon where no one else sat around him. The door swung open a third time and this man didn't walk in very far at all. He sat by the entrance and didn't even hide the fact that he too was looking for someone. All three men seemed to have the same goal in mind for the same someone.

Archie, at last, made it down the stairs. Without a single look around, he went straight to the bar and started ordering something. Lewiston wasn't sure if it was a drink or food, but it didn't matter. As he saw all three men who walked in, they all acted as if they had finally found their man. All three men tensed up and started to breathe heavily in their own way. Lewiston did his best not to make it obvious that he was watching them. He mainly used only his eyes and used as little head movement as he could.

Poor Eva Harper was oblivious to the whole thing as she just kept talking. Lewiston couldn't hear her as his eyes just kept flicking around from man to man. Finally, Eva noticed that she didn't have all of Lewiston's attention as he seemed like he was staring into space.

She looked around at the other men and then back at Lewiston.

"It looks like this place is starting to fill up." She said, "Perhaps you would like to join me and get a breath of fresh air."

Lewiston’s attention was once again brought to her. It was an odd thing to say for only three men walking in. Four men, counting Archie. How was this place filling up?

"Or perhaps someplace more," she leaned in so only Lewiston could hear her say the word, "intimate."

A fifth man walked down the stairs. A black man who had a nice dress shirt and vest on who waved at the bartender and walked directly to the piano that sat by the stairs.

After a stretch of his fingers he began playing the piano. The notes of the piano seemed to act like a work whistle blowing as all three men stood up and started pulling their jackets back, revealing their guns.

Lewiston jumped up and quickly walked around to the other side of the table where Eva sat.

"Mrs. Harper, would you join me in this dance?" he quickly said as he picked her up by the hand.

"I?" She exclaimed, not being able to think of what to say next.

The moment she made it to her feet, Lewiston pulled her in close and whispered into her ear, "When I tell you to get down, get on the floor."

"What?" she whispered as she tried to pull away from him, but he wouldn't let her. From his angle he saw the man by the door, pulling out his gun.

"Get down!" Lewiston shouted as he pushed her down, no longer giving her a choice. He slipped his hand in his pocket and pulled out his pistol and pointed it at the man by the door. Before the man could fire, Lewiston shot him in the chest, dropping him.

Lewiston turned to the man at the bar who just saw his fallen friend's body at the door and by the time he figured out what happened, Lewiston pulled the trigger, killing his 2nd man. The final man in the corner of the room had a quicker response than the one at the bar did, because he was able to process what was happening and actually got a shot off at Lewiston. The bullet missed however as Lewiston was in the process of turning around and when he fully extended his hand, he fired.

The final man fell back in his chair and leaned against the corner of the wall, dead as a doornail.

Eva Harper laid on the ground with her hands over her head. The piano player took shelter underneath one of the tables. The bartender was joined by Archie who jumped over the bar during all of the ruckus. Slowly everyone started to get up when they realized all the shooting had finally stopped.

Everyone saw that Lewiston was the only one standing as he looked back and forth, making sure everyone was dead. The gun smoke still hung in the air when Lewiston looked back at the bar where Archie stood and yelled, "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?!
