Between The Tides

The Space Between

The Space Between

Sep 17, 2025

The city had a way of swallowing days whole. Between morning classes, endless readings, and nights that stretched too late, Isla, Callie, and Elara moved through their routines like people who were still learning how to breathe in a different rhythm. Their apartment, cluttered with books, laundry half-folded, and instant noodle cups stacked on the counter, became the backdrop of their new lives.

Isla leaned over the small kitchen table one night, flipping through a textbook, her pen tapping against the margin. Callie was curled on the couch with her laptop, her glasses slipping down her nose. Elara sat near the window, sketching in her notebook, lost in lines and shading.

It could have been any other evening. But beneath the laughter that broke out when Isla spilled her drink or the comfort of eating together, there was something different now—something left unsaid that sometimes filled the silences between them.

That night had changed things.

The memory lingered like the aftertaste of saltwater.

It had been weeks ago, after the stress of midterms. Isla couldn’t sleep and found Callie sitting on the balcony, knees pulled up, the city glowing beneath them.

“You’re still awake?” Isla whispered, sliding the glass door open.

Callie nodded. “I couldn’t stop thinking.”

They sat side by side, the cool night air brushing against their arms. Isla reached out without thinking, her fingers brushing Callie’s sleeve. She didn’t pull away.

“Do you ever worry that… things will change too much?” Isla asked softly.

Callie turned to her, her eyes unreadable in the dim light. “With us?”

Isla hesitated. Her chest tightened, words rising but catching in her throat. “Yeah. Sometimes I feel like… what we have could slip away, and I don’t know what I’d do if it did.”

Callie didn’t answer right away. Instead, she let her head rest lightly against Isla’s shoulder. The touch was small, but it set Isla’s heart racing.

“I don’t want anything to slip away,” Callie murmured. “Not with you.”

The silence that followed was heavy but not empty. Isla wanted to say more, wanted to admit the mess of emotions tangled inside her, but the words stayed trapped. She only leaned closer, letting the warmth between them speak for her.

And then Elara’s voice had called softly from inside—half-asleep, asking if Isla was still awake. The moment broke, scattering like sand in the wind.

Neither Isla nor Callie spoke of it again. But both remembered.

Now, in the present, Isla caught herself glancing at Callie too long while she laughed at something on her screen. She noticed how Callie’s hand would sometimes linger when she passed her a pen, or how her smile softened when their eyes met.

But Elara noticed too. She always had.

Later that week, the three of them went to a small café near campus. The place was noisy, filled with students, but they found a corner table. Isla and Callie squeezed onto the same side, sharing a slice of cake. Elara sat across from them, stirring her coffee slowly.

“You two look like you’re dating,” Elara joked, her voice light but her eyes flickering with something sharper.

Callie flushed, pulling her hand back from where it had almost brushed Isla’s. “We’re not,” she said quickly.

“Relax, I was kidding,” Elara smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. She looked down at her sketchbook instead.

Isla bit her lip. She wanted to bridge the space, to reassure Elara, but the words didn’t come.

On the walk home, Isla walked between them, one hand brushing Callie’s, the other wanting to reach for Elara’s but staying still.

That night, Callie found her again on the balcony.

“You didn’t say anything earlier,” Callie whispered.

“About what?” Isla’s voice was soft.

Elara’s words echoed in both their heads.

Callie looked away. “Never mind.”

Isla exhaled, frustrated with herself. She wanted to pull Callie closer, to ask what she meant, but the fear of what it could mean for all three of them held her back.

Inside, Elara sat awake at the window, sketchbook open but forgotten, her eyes catching the faint reflection of Isla and Callie talking outside. She told herself she wasn’t jealous. She told herself she had no right to be. But her chest ached anyway.

The city was big, yet their apartment felt small, almost too small for everything unspoken pressing between them.

And though none of them said it aloud, each girl knew: something was shifting again, like the tide pulling quietly at the shore.
