Chapter 9: The Dance of Fate

The next day, Alessia took a quiet swim through town, her mind restless. The water was calmer here, the gentle waves lapping against the coral pathways as she moved. Just as she was about to dive deeper, her shell communicator vibrated. She sighed, already knowing who it was.

She hesitated, then answered.

"Alessia, are you two doing okay?" Her father’s voice filled the line. "Aurora isn't complaining too much about training again, is she? Don’t worry—only two weeks left before one of you gets transferred elsewhere. And by that, I mean Aurora."

Alessia clenched her jaw.

"Yeah… Aurora," she muttered before ending the call.

With a deep breath, she shook off the conversation and swam toward a small bookshop nestled between two coral-covered buildings. As she entered, she spotted a familiar face—a kind older woman sitting behind the counter.

"Well, if it isn’t Alessia," the woman greeted with a smile. "Looking for a training book?"

Alessia blinked. "Wait… don’t you work at Coral’s Sweet Shop? What are you doing here?"

The woman chuckled. "Ah, this is just one of my extra jobs. Gotta keep busy."

Alessia shook her head in amusement as she browsed the shelves.

The woman reached behind the counter and pulled out a book. "I think you’re looking for this—The Tail Lir Ancient Training Book. It contains the legends of the greatest tail dancers in history."

Alessia’s eyes widened. "Wow… this just saved me hours of searching." She took the book and thanked the woman before quickly heading back to the academy.

Meanwhile, at the sliding park…

Laughter and excited screams filled the air as Aurora, Cyrus, and Cerise enjoyed their afternoon. The crystal-clear waterfalls poured into natural slides, and Cyrus shot down one with a wide grin.

Cerise, lounging on a smooth rock, turned to Aurora with a knowing smirk.

"So… are you and Calloway more than just dance partners now?"

Aurora’s cheeks heated, and she quickly looked away. "What? I mean… I guess so. I just hope Adriana doesn’t hate me for taking up most of his time."

Cerise waved a hand dismissively. "Unless it’s Flora, you’ll be fine. But even she won’t bother you once you’re transferred."

Aurora frowned slightly and sat up. "About that… I’ve been thinking. Maybe I don’t want to transfer. Tail dancing—it feels different now. It’s not just pressure anymore. It’s… enjoyable. Easier than when I first got here." She sighed, leaning back against the rock again. "But I’ll think about it a little more."

Cerise smiled. "You should do what makes you happy."

That night…

Alessia sat at her desk, flipping through the pages of the Tail Lir Ancient Training Book.

One particular story caught her eye—a legend about a mysterious potion.

"A poison unlike any other, hidden in a forgotten cave deep within the town. Those who consume it gain the power to move like the ocean itself—graceful, strong, unstoppable."

Alessia’s heart pounded.

"The Heart Festival is in three days… If this legend is true and the cave still exists…"

She didn’t hesitate. She needed that power.

Quickly, she stuffed supplies into her bag, her mind racing with excitement. Before heading out, she turned to Aurora.

"I’m taking a short swim in town again," she said casually.

Aurora, already half-asleep, mumbled something incoherent before rolling over in bed.

With that, Alessia slipped out of the dorm and into the dark ocean.

The town gates loomed ahead, marking the boundary of safety. Beyond them? The wild seas. A place where predators lurked and danger was guaranteed.

But Alessia didn’t care.

She tightened the straps on her bag and gripped the small weapons she had brought—dagger-like siren shards and a small energy pulse device for emergencies.

With a deep breath, she swam forward.

The water around her grew darker. The eerie silence was only broken by the occasional flicker of movement in the shadows. Something was watching her.

Then—an ambush.

A group of hostile predictor mermaids and a few human hunters lunged from the depths, their eyes gleaming with malice.

Alessia twisted and dodged, her tail slicing through the water with precision. She barely avoided a spear thrown in her direction, the sharp edge grazing past her arm.

"Focus."

With a swift movement, she flipped backward, unleashing her siren nails in a deadly slash. One attacker recoiled, hissing in pain.

Another came from behind, but she was faster—she slammed her energy pulse device into the water, sending a powerful shockwave that dispersed the enemies just long enough for her to escape.

She raced through the open ocean, heart hammering, until she finally saw it—the cave.

A massive stone blocked the entrance, just as the book described.

Alessia pressed her glowing siren nails against the rock, tracing the ancient markings. The stone rumbled, slowly shifting open.

She slipped inside.

The cave was silent. No ancient relics, no glowing treasures—just endless stone.

Alessia's brow furrowed.

"Is this a joke?"

She searched for hours, growing more frustrated with every passing second. It was just a cave—nothing more.

Anger bubbled inside her.

She grabbed a rock and hurled it against the stone wall.

The impact echoed through the cave, but something strange happened.

The rock shattered—and from its cracks, a thick, shimmering purple liquid seeped out.

Alessia’s eyes widened.

"The potion… it’s inside the rocks!"

She hurriedly picked up more, cracking them open one by one. The purple liquid poured out, swirling like captured lightning.

A slow, victorious smile spread across her lips.

"This… this is it."

She had found the key to becoming unstoppable.

And nothing was going to stand in her way.
