Scarlet Weaver

Chapter-12

Chapter-12

Sep 13, 2025

Silas was assigned to Selene for the remainder of the week before departure as tutor, of sorts. He was tasked to teach her survival methods and required tools as much as possible and as fast as possible without the servants or maids doubting or finding out about anything. To let this happen without any hitches along the way, Silas was allowed to escort her instead of visiting her from time to time, so that his presence around her or his conversations with her in whispers would not draw any unnecessary attention.
Selene was a mage too, a Veil Mage to be precise. Her spells and mana usage were limited only toward her own self and never on others, perhaps due to lack of her proficiency. She could cast visual distortion veils to camouflage into her surroundings or cast a minor reflect spell to parry the incoming spell. Silas took a breath of relief upon hearing this, it was a small burden off his shoulders as he did not have to protect her at every moment of their journey. Tormac was more confused than upset upon being told of the news that Selene would accompany them, but he didn't protest in the end as it meant a little more reward money as well as the company of a lady, a noble lady even. Tormac was still stuck with the Count as his escort, so in the end he did grumble about how Silas would spend his time with the Lady instead of him.
Silas had Selene preparing for the journey by letting her read books on botany and the wildlife, for survival purposes so that at least one of them had knowledge for foraging.
Selene was eager to learn but the thought of parting made her constantly dread it. It wasn't a simple task to just part ways with the ones who raised you, cared for you and made you who you are, and Selene was taking it step by step to digest all of this. Silas saw her hands shake once in a while and would let her take a moment for herself, Nate once felt the same. At the end of his duties for the day, Silas would then go back to his room to work on his magecraft again till the dead of night before resting. This was necessary to keep his senses sharp, which the comfort around him was slowly dulling. The hush of twilight gave him a moment to reflect on what his goal would be. No doors would open to his magecraft and no soothing arms for his scarred body. He valued Tormac's presence with him but Silas couldn't just drag him through an odyssey to nowhere and with Selene added to their party he had a temporary goal, which once fulfilled would only set him back to his venture to nowhere.

"What do i DO here? What CAN i do here?" Nate thought to himself, laying in bed and preparing to sleep "Learn my origin as Silas? Doubt any records exist for an orphan. Explore my magecraft's origins? I could do that. Would i settle down?" Silas mused on for a little while before he drifted on to sleep. The next morning he woke up early, earlier than he usually would, he set his elbows on cushion and propped his body up. He stood up to go get ready with eyes drowsy still. He had time to kill and he decided to patrol the mansion before breakfast and then his daily tasks. The mansion had a large backyard with a large fountain and some exotic plants that lined the boundary wall.
"Good cover with the bushes for when we escape" Silas thought "Using a carriage is out of the question, too easy to spot. No horseback either, too easy to track. Then by foot it is again" Silas sighed at the thought "This is going to be one long journey"
Silas resumed his duty on time and followed Selene throughout the day, almost as if he was her butler. It was 2 more days before they set out and she was almost ready with her crude knowledge.
Tormac was making the most of his meals too, sneaking some of the dry meat from the stores and some dehydrated bread for later. To those who knew what's to come, a heavy cloud lingered over their heads, yet none on their faces, for there was a facade to be upheld. Selene struck up conversations with Silas from time to time trying to learn more about him. Most of his replies to her questions were simple and direct and when she asked something personal he simply grumbled.

"What were you doing before you came to Esmoendo?" Selene asked him once
"I was a mage scholar" Silas said dryly, hoping she would go back to the book she was reading
"Oh? Where? You don't seem old enough to have graduated already. Did you drop out?" Selene continued with her quest to satisfy her own curiosity.
"Yes, i suppose i did" Silas said, fixing his reptilian-skin bracers
"Why?"
"Circumstances then, forced my hand and there was nothing left for me there anyways." Silas continued "Same goes for Tormac, that's how we met."
"Where was your academy? Perhaps I might know an acquaintance or two from there" Selene said with a snobby noble lady smile but with a tone of gentleness.
"Not one of importance" Silas said and diverted her attention to the book in front of her by pointing at it "Yusin plant, explain the potential uses"
"Tch, fine. Don't tell me. Yusin plants are known for their resins that can be taken from the origin points of old branches. Resin can be used either as a balm for cuts or wounds or even as a low quality adhesive." Selene said and stood up "But that's not important. Why do you avoid my questions? Why are you so secretive?"
Silas was annoyed, prying into other people's business is a beacon for trouble and Selene excelled at it. "Selene, put a hold on your tongue. Poking into matters unrelated to you will bring you trouble. I understand that you have been spoiled so far into your life but things are about to change. Mind that."
Selene was shocked for a moment at the informality of his tone towards her but then she realized that he couldn't address her as "My Lady" every single time during their travel and she had to get used to it as well. Silas was just happy that pouting was the most she did to express her being upset.
"Maybe she isn't that spoiled" Silas thought and picked up another book beside her and leaned onto the desk.
He looked at the title: "The Veiled Compendium of Flesh and Soul"
"Book on spirituality?" Silas thought "Right, religion here is different. I should probably learn a little about it too" and flipped open the book to read:

"Desires are not immoral, they are human emotions and are an innate part of oneself. Discovering them is beautiful journey but often need to be masked by modesty and harnessed privately or with a beloved. Carnal intimation may bring a pair to union of mind, body, soul and spirit. To truly pleasure a woman you need to etch yourself onto her body-"

Silas snapped the book shut, placed the book back on the table and muttered "What the fuck?" under his breath before heading out of the room for some fresh air. He had seen Selene's face go red from embarrassment and the absolute control over herself from lunging onto him to snatch the book out of his hands. Out of all the books he could have picked from the table, he just had to go on and pick the sex book. He took a deep breath before knocking on the door again and entering. Selene was still a bit red but she had collected herself as well and had her head buried in the book she was reading from before and the one that Silas was reading was now missing from the table. He went over to the table and grabbed another book to read along with her. This was awkward for both of them but neither dared speak a word to the other. Both of them kept their heads tilted and eyes busy to make sure they don't make eye contact and this went on till it was time for Luncheon.
Silas followed Selene, quietly and promptly to the Dining hall and stood behind her without a sound. The Count sat nearby and enquired of Selene's progress to which Silas just gave a concise update and nothing else. Selene was still sneaking glances from her seat, evidently still thinking about what had just happened in the Study.
"Preparations?" the Count spoke up, making Silas step forward
"In progress but slow. Distractions.....aplenty" Silas said and looked at Selene, who turned her eyes away, red.
"Gear?"
"Ready and strapped. Good to go, even at a moment's notice." Silas reported "What about funds, my Lord?"
"Prepared under multiple pseudonyms. Selene knows them all" the Count said
"With just 2 more days left, i would suggest you spend some time with the young Lady, my Lord." Silas said and stepped back again to give the Count a moment of private thoughts.
"My daughter has trust in you, young man. She sees something in you, please do not betray that." the Count said
"I understand, my Lord. You have my word that she will reach her destination." Silas said.
Silence came over in the near empty dining hall, heavy. No more words were exchanged and no more interactions among them besides Silas bowing to take his leave and follow Selene back to the Study.
"Do you think I'm ready?" Selene said, slumped into her chair
"No, you're far from what is needed......but time allowed for only so much." Silas said
"Come take a seat" Selene said motioning to the chair opposite to her "I was wondering if I could stay. Here, I mean. I could try and help my father with the war and-"
"Out of question" Silas cut her off, adjusting his collar sitting down.
"You haven't even heard me." Selene scrunched her eyebrows at him
"I don't have to. It's not a good idea. You couldn't even serve in the medical tent to tend to the injured. The battlefield is not a playground for you to prance into without issues and come out unscathed, mentally or physically." Silas said
"I think i could help with the wounded" Selene said, now imagining the scenario
"No, you cannot. Setting aside your assumed medical expertise, you couldn't even set your eyes on a mangled corpse without regurgitating." Silas continued "I don't say this to insult or undermine you. It's the truth. And the panic of treating someone in hysteria due to shock will only confuse you and drive you to make mistakes and mistakes kill the one being treated."
Selene remained silent, she had no counterpoint or an answer for him, he was right after all. The two continued to discuss possible work Selene could have done if she would stay, all the while Silas constantly reminding her that she was in fact, not staying.
"I am sorry, I know i will leave with you but i make these pointless arguments with you because i would want to stay. I know of every horror that would befall me if i would stay but my heart.....my heart wants me to stay by father." Selene said with a tear rolling down her eye and then went into a silent sob with her hands covering her face. Silas said nothing, letting her have a moment of self-reflection and comfort with herself. He gently placed his hand over her shoulder, now heaving with every sob.
"I am sorry that you have to do this, but i don't see another choice. Be strong for your father." Silas said, softly
"I know, I will be. I am his daughter after all." Selene said forcing a smile

I opened my eyes and closed it immediately, it didn't make a difference, i couldn't see anything. Then a voice spoke from the void and said: "sins pile up and so do deeds, your actions were impure even if your intentions were right. But like any other you may choose redemption, for we are not cruel just as are we not forgiving. "
