The Waking Hour

Whoosh!

Bam!

Several swings struck at Shin, and each time he would narrowly dodge it. The tattered monster was treacherous in its pursuit, not letting a single opportunity slip by.

Ever since the effects of the 'Wanderer' charm wore off, the monster became a lot more aggressive.

Even worse, Shin had to constantly be wary of the terrifying maw that appeared on his hand. He had no idea what it was, but in the world of the supernatural, it had to be something dangerous.

Still hobbling from the earlier blow the monster dealt to him, Shin tried to escape the pursuit of the scythe-wielding giant. It took a great deal of effort to maintain his sprinting pace, but he persevered.

Thinking back to the safety of the wanderer's veil, he lamented the short duration he had spent in there.

Dammit, that charm's effects were too quick. If only I had another one, then I could at least catch a breather and formulate a new plan. Whilst lampooning the situation, Shin suddenly tripped, and immediately his instinct was to huddle up and protect himself, expecting a scythe to strike at him.

However, there was nothing but silence.

When he opened his eyes, he instantly recognized the environment. He was back in the wanderer's veil. The tattered-clothed monster had run past him, seemingly unaware of where he had gone.

How the hell am I back here? As far as he knew, he only had one 'Wanderer' charm. And Tsuki made no mention of reentering once out.

After three seconds Shin found himself back again in the visible plane. The monster then quickly stopped in its tracks and charged back at Shin.

"Go back, go back!" He shouted as he imagined the safety of the wanderer's veil once more.

And just like before, he found himself back here. The monster now stood confused, its scythe dropping to the ground with its one eye scanning the surroundings.

Finally having the chance for a short rest, Shin looked at his right hand. The maw that had formed seemed very quiet, seemingly posing no harm to him.

"Is this all your doing?" His question silently floated in the wanderer's veil.

…

"Your Apostle calls upon thee."

"'He who devours fate.'"

"Ouroboros."

Once he spoke these words, an invisible ripple seemed to form in the space around him.

Behind Gin, a massive silver snake emerged from out of nowhere. It curled and slowly slithered into the shape of a circle, which then bit on its own tail.

He outstretched his hand towards the tattered-clothed monster and spoke with a voice filled with authority.

"Your Fate is bound to your kin."

The massive silver snake let go of its tail and immediately dashed towards the giant. It gulped the creature in one bite before promptly disappearing into the void of reality with its offering.

As he put on his sunglasses, Gin's gray pupil-less eyes began to return. After having bound the intertwining fates of the Twin Wraiths, he felt a bit lightheaded.

These Twin Wraiths are indeed unique Rank 2 Legends. You have to kill them both at exactly the same time; otherwise, they will keep reappearing.

"Whoever set up this array definitely means to keep something hidden." Gin said, as he quickly reassessed the dangers of this assignment.

"Thankfully both of them are still safe. Time to find the other one."

After having bound the two monsters' fates, it meant that now all Gin needed to do was kill the other one, and it would be like killing both at the same time.

…

Inside the safety of the wanderer's veil, Shin had actually discovered a rather interesting development. Whenever he thought of entering the hidden plane, he would automatically find himself here. And if he wanted to exit, then he would reappear back in reality.

And every time he disappeared, the tattered-clothed monster would run past like a headless chicken trying to find him.

This was amusing the first couple times. But soon Shin noticed that the more he entered the wanderer's veil, the hungrier the mouth on his hand would become. That hunger felt like the same 'thirst' that would steal his essence.

That's why Shin now formulated a plan to make use of the remaining chances he had to use this ability.

He would shoot at the monster, then 'disappear.' And when he reappears, he would shoot again and repeat. Once he exhausts his spirituality, either he will be the only one left standing or he'll be too tired to defend against the swinging scythes.

Phew, let's get this show on the road. Exiting from the wanderer's veil, Shin quickly aimed the silver pistol.

Bang!

The recoil of the shot had stung his left hand and caused him to miss his mark. But he had expected this, since he had never used a gun before, much less held one.

Shin was not discouraged and instead promptly disappeared before another shot rang out. Bang! This time it hit but caused no fatal wound. Disappearing again, he repeated this cycle of actions.

If one were to look at this scene from the outside, then they would easily mistake his ability as 'blinking.' However, in that short duration, Shin actually managed to somewhat grasp the rhythm to quickly enter and exit the wanderer's veil. Each and every time he would appear in the tattered-clothed monster's blind spot and fire a few shots before swiftly disappearing.

This plan seemed to work perfectly, but Shin knew that he couldn't keep this up for too long. The hunger in his hand was growing stronger. Any moment could be the last 'blink.'

And just as Shin was preparing to jump back into the wanderer's veil, he found himself unable.

Shit!

The tattered-clothed giant did not intend to waste this opportunity and quickly grabbed Shin in a bear hug, making sure that he couldn't disappear anymore.

It tightly squeezed Shin, causing his ribs to moan in pain. Any more and he would definitely pierce an organ. And with his pistol having fallen out of his hand, he had no way to defend himself.

Trying his best to break the hold on him, Shin kicked and wriggled but to no avail. This monster intended to finish him.

Suddenly Shin saw himself in the monster's singular left eye. He saw the weak him, the him that was about to die. Having lost everything and gaining nothing in return. The anger inside him surged as he felt that overwhelming hunger take him.

"Die, you bastard!"

He lifted his right hand and planted it against the monster's face. The ravenous mouth on his hand began to devour everything in its path. It gouged out the monster's single eye and slurped it up, causing the monster to churn in extreme pain.

It suddenly hunched and fell to the ground, its body convulsed as its Essence Pearled suddenly coalesced.

Seeing this, Shin felt immense relief. However, his right hand had other plans. Upon seeing the Essence Pearl, it shot outward and even pulled Shin's entire body to devour the colorful orb.

Immediately absorbing the massive influx of essence from the Essence Pearl of a Legend Rank, Shin immediately felt his consciousness fading.

"Shin! Shin, answer me!" Tsuki's voice called out.

Soon she came upon the unconscious Shin. He seemed normal for the most part, with a pistol beside him and no monster hand in sight.
