Chosen Ones: Hero Hall

Chapter 1

Ah, you know, summer break is great. Sure sometimes you get stuck in summer school, but with an interdimensional school backing you up it’s pretty hard to send someone there in the first place. If you don’t remember I’m Johnathan Brody, I am a Reality Mage and go to the MDSC, in other words the Multi-Dimensional School for Combat and Magic. We don’t like to say the Magic part though. I recently discovered a group of cult members trying to take down the MDSC and its Headmaster, The Master Knight. While I’m sure the Master Knight can take care of himself, he kind of put me and my best friend on the front lines. By accident. You see, we took down a small group of the cult, the Controllers, and were rewarded by the Master Knight into a higher position in the bigger magic community. He announced us the Rangers and Librarians of Hero Hall. Now if you don’t know about hero hall… Don’t be sad, I had no idea what it was at first either. Albert, my best friend, tried to explain it to me. With magic seeping into the entire multiverse slowly, more and more people with incredible abilities and magical powers were just popping up on the radar. With no place to track it the Master Knight created Hero Hall, a place to store all the information of all heroes and villains in the multiverse. Crazy right? And he gave two kids the job! They're screwed! Wait…

“So what exactly do we have to do again?” Johnathan asked from his bed, reading a recent reboot of the Xeno Force and their endeavors. Which was one hundred percent not canon, he’d met the Xeno Force, and they did not do any of this.

“Well,” Said Albert looking through a giant book on illusion magic, “Our job is to find people with abilities, and record them. What can they do? Should they go to the MDSC? Is it biological or magical? That kind of stuff.”

Johnathan jumped out of his bed, “Wait, how are we going to do cool stuff then? Do we still have classes?”

Albert nodded, “Yes we still have classes,” He held up a letter, wrapped in a red bow. “Did you even read the letter?”

Johnathan shook his head, “Nope, thought that was junk mail.”

Albert’s mouth hung open, “It appeared out of thin air!”

Johnathan shrugged, “Pigeon?”

Albert threw his hands up, “We’re already going to be fired.” He sighed, and started reading the letter aloud. “To Albert Duncan and Johnathan Brody, You, both, have been hand selected by the Master Knight to skip all forms of training to go straight to Hero Hall. You will have minimum classes, and you will be sent on missions to stop interdimensional threats at times, and you shall also be given Ranger standard gear. When you arrive at the MDSC this year you will have new rooms in the council center in Rager briefing, you are now free to roam the halls on the MDSC as you wish and have unlimited free passes. Good luck, from the entire MDSC faculty.” Albert showed him the letter, “Pretty important.”

Johnathan shook his head, “No,” Albert stared at him for a moment, “Very important.” Johnathan grabbed the letter and ran through it again, “Wait! Infinite free passes! Now Mr. Blackfang Can’t send me to detention!”

“Why Mr. Blackfang? He’s a new teacher.” Albert said.

“And hated me from the first day I met him.” Johnathan said, “Not the best guy.”

“Well come on then, let’s go say goodbye to everyone.” Albert said.

Johnathan sighed, “Why did they even need to do this? My parents don’t even know about the MDSC!”

“Don’t worry my parent’s probably cast a replacement spell, they’ll think we’re talking about combat and not magic.”

“Oh.” Johnathan thought for a second, “Wait, is that how the Magical Community stays hidden?”

Albert nodded, “Mostly yes.”

Johnathan nodded, then smiled. “What does Naamah think of your new job?”

“I feel like you're just making fun of us by now.” Albert said.

Johnathan shook his head, “I’ve done that in the past, yes. But I won’t do it now that we actually have the job, and you're kinda already dating her. So it’s not funny anymore.”

“How so?” Albert asked.

Johnathan frowned, “If I say, you like Naamah you like Naamah. Would that hurt you? No! Because it’s already obvious you like her, and you're already dating her.”

Albert nodded, “Ok, I can see that.”

Johnathan sighed, “I don’t know if I fix this case mate.” Johnathan jumped, “No, no British accent.” He pointed his finger towards Albert, “You gave me an accent!”

Albert nodded, “As you should have, now come on! The MDSC’s waiting!”

They went downstairs to find Albert’s parents and grandma, and Johnathan’s parents and uncle. Everyone cheered for them when they arrived. Many people congratulated them, Johnathan’s uncle gave him some kind of weird multi-color pen. He didn’t need it where he was going, but he packed it with his things and thanked him. They left the house and walked a few streets, their families still having a party.

“So, what’s our goal for this year?” Asked Albert, “Any in mind?”

Johnathan shrugged, “It would be great to learn some more Reality magic, but I think I’m sticking to the mission thing.”

Albert nodded, “Our first mission is going to be finding that spy though.”

Johnathan nodded, “Sure, I was thinking about fighting a few Mole Horns, but why not? Let’s find a spy that we weren’t even to catch last time we tried to find them.”

“You know it would probably be best, just trying one more time at least. If we could find this one spy, then the Controllers won’t have any power in the MDSC.” Albert said. They stopped at the same bus stop they had a million times.

Johnathan sighed and nodded, “All right, let’s catch some spies.”

Albert nodded, “Thank you. I’m also pretty sure it could be fun, we have more access to the MDSC now. It might be even easier than you’d expect.”

A bus rolled by and stopped in front of them, the doors opened and the bus driver looked at them. “All aboard for the MDSC!” They yelled, probably a bit too loud.

Johnathan pointed to the bus driver as they sat down, “Is he immortal too? Like Ms. Gorgan, or the Master Knight?”

Albert shook his head, “I’m pretty sure he’s a healer of some kind, doesn’t have the ability of immortality though. Barely anyone has that these days, not even you.”

Johnathan looked at him, “Your saying, even with the power to control Reality itself. I’m not able to control life and death?”

Albert twisted his wrist, “Maybe if you use spellcrafting, but any other way would be too hard. There aren’t many spells except for the basic ones for you, and you don’t even know all of those.”
Johnathan looked angrily at Albert, “I know plenty about Reality magic, I have mastered three whole spells.”

Albert squinted his eyes, “How did you master the Da-exist hex?”

Johnathan widened his eyes, “Um…” He’d been practicing in the sewers on rats, but had a few run-ins with non-magics. “Let’s just say don’t ask for any sewer cleaner’s names.”

“Did you die-exist a human?”

“No, I merely gave myself time to run away.” He said remembering it didn’t last forever.

Albert nodded, “Great, that’s the first thing you put into the hero files.”

Johnathan looked at him, “Wait, are we in the hero files?”

Albert shrugged, “All we did was prove that there might be a spy in the school, we never really saved many people. We don’t even know what they’re gonna do.”

Johnathan nodded, but couldn’t imagine the Controllers wanting anything good. They murdered thousands, and caused the largest genocide in the known multiverses history. Just by using one small spell. “They couldn’t have been doing anything good.” Johnathan said.

Albert nodded, “Maybe. Probably, but maybe they just want to survive.”

“They want control over the entire multiverse, but the Master Knight already has total control over everything.” Johnathan said.

Albert jolted up, “What are you talking about?”

“The Master Knight has his thumb on the controller of the multiverse, he controls all. The Controllers just want power.”

Albert shook his head, “The Master Knight doesn’t control the world, destiny guides souls, people help people, apprentice chooses master. They just don’t know it.”

Johnathan was about to say something like, ‘Then why did ___’ or ‘How did ___’ But before he could a giant monster hit the side of their bus, people started running and screaming. “So, this is our job now right?” Johnathan said.

“I’ll set up an illusionary spell, you go kill that thing. Remember if you are using the desomation spell, you have to hit its weakest point.” Albert reminded Johnathan.

“Ya ya, you're like a mom for magic.” Johnathan ran to the front of the bus, and patted the driver on the shoulder. “We’ll take care of this thing, you keep the kids ok.” The bus driver nodded and Johnathan hit the button to open the door. “Thanks!”

A short look into the amazing expansion into the world of magic, and what it can bring for our characters. (Also, more talking done by the best back talker of the century. Yep, Johnathan has some things to say.)
