The Indifference of Ramyeon

The Indifference of Ramyeon

Sep 14, 2025

Beom Seok, disguised as a sickly college student, walked through the quiet apartment. He wore a baggy hoodie, and a bit of his usual dress shirt collar peeked out from underneath. He had a medical mask pulled loosely under his chin, not yet snug because he was still inside the dorm. He felt a small victory in the anonymity of the clothes, a shield he could drop on a whim. Nevertheless, the hoodie was annoying because he didn't like hoodies; he preferred a blazer, vest, or overcoat for his dress shirt layer. But for the sake of his disguise, he pouted and adjusted his collar.

All the members were gathered in the living room.

Kangmin, on his way to his shared room with Beom Seok, raised a brow. "Going out, Seokie?"

"Yeah, I found a shop that has fewer people," Beom Seok replied, his voice a little softer than usual to match his unassuming look.

Kangmin checked the time. It was almost ten. "It's late. Most places are less crowded at this hour."

"I know," Beom Seok said, a hint of his pride showing. "But this shop mostly caters to office workers and older people, not young folks. I'll be in and out."

"Then be careful, Seokie," Kangmin said. Despite his serious face, his voice was warm with brotherly concern. He then entered their room.

"I will," Beom Seok promised.

In the living room, Minho sprawled upside-down on the sofa, still wearing his modeling clothes from earlier. His suit jacket lay crumpled beside him, tie completely loosened, several buttons of his dress shirt undone. He scrolled through his phone with lazy focus while Nozomu snored softly next to him.

Beom Seok couldn't help but beam at the sight. "See, hyung? Even disheveled, a dress shirt and suit jacket make you look good!"

Minho waved a dismissive hand without looking up. "Yeah, yeah."

Beom Seok's shoulders slumped in a playful pout. "No one appreciates a dress shirt like I do."

From his spot in the corner of the living room, Hajoon, who was playing a quiet melody on his guitar, simply looked up and gave Beom Seok a knowing nod. Jaemin sat beside him, noting Hajoon's guitar music.

Beom Seok smiled and walked to the front door, pulling his mask into place and slipping out into the cool night air.

The moment the door clicked shut.

"That explains why he barely touched dinner," Jaemin observed quietly.

Meanwhile at a Ramyeon Shop

The small ramyeon shop was bustling with the quiet hum of a late-night crowd. The aroma of rich broth and spices filled the air. Jin ah, Minji, and Areum worked in a practiced rhythm. Jin ah hurried from table to table, delivering steaming bowls of noodles. Minji stood behind the counter, taking orders with a friendly smile, her pen tapping against her order pad. Meanwhile, Areum was busy in the back, cleaning bowls and wiping down the prep station, making sure everything was spotless. They moved with a comfortable efficiency, a team in perfect sync.

Suddenly, a female customer who wasn't into idol culture but only watched television dramas, spoke to her friend at a nearby table. "I heard there was some acting happening at the park a few days ago for the drama 'At Our Seventeen.' They said Bomsok from... BTSB, I think, that's his group name."

Jin ah snorted from behind the counter. Bomb of Socks? she thought. Then it hit her. Wait, does that mean a few days ago, when I was with Areum at the park, some acting was happening? No wonder there were so many people. Not that she and her unnie cared. She preferred anime over dramas, while Areum unnie preferred animal live channels.

"He's been acting forever," the other woman replied. "Since he was little, back when he went by his real name—Jang Beom Seok. Talented kid, even then."

Jin ah blinked. Jang Beom Seok? she thought. Wow, he and that idol really have the same name. She shook her head. Hmm, is that why Beom Seok's bias is Bomsok? Nah, no way. Maybe he saw how hard Bomsok works and idolized him as a role model. Not that she knew anything about how Bomsok was as a person anyway.

The job continued. The late-night rush died down, and the shop grew quieter. The clatter of bowls and the sizzle of the stove softened into a low, steady rhythm. Jin ah was wiping down a table when the bell above the front door jingled, signaling a new customer.

She glanced up, then froze. The person who walked in was wearing a black hoodie with a blue dress shirt collar peeking out and round glasses, with a medical mask dangling loosely beneath his chin. She squinted, then realized, it's Jang Beom Seok.

"One ramyeon, please," he said, warmth evident in his voice.

"You actually showed up again," Jin ah said, surprised despite herself.

"I did promise to become a regular." His eyes crinkled with a smile.

"Same order as last time?"

Beom Seok nodded, pulling down his mask entirely and flashing her a practiced smile and wink.

Jin-ah watched him, pieces clicking together. He removed the mask so casually, and despite the deliberately messy hair and glasses, he was clearly attractive. The realization hit her.

"You're not actually sick, are you?"

He coughed unconvincingly. "Of course I'm sick!"

Jin ah's expression remained flat. "Right. Look, you're obviously uncomfortable in all that gear, and it's almost closing time. We're not exactly a hotbed of social activity here." She gestured around the nearly empty shop. "Nobody's going to bother you about being good-looking."

Beom Seok glanced around uncertainly. "You're sure?"

"It's just us and a couple of regulars. You look like you're suffocating."

"Well... if you really think it's okay..."

Relief flooded his features as he peeled off the hoodie, revealing the crisp dress shirt beneath. He methodically unbuttoned and rolled up his sleeves, removed his glasses, and finger-combed his hair back into place. The transformation was striking—awkward college student to polished young man in seconds.

"Much better," he said, adjusting his collar with visible satisfaction. He looked directly at Jin-ah and winked at her with practiced charm.

Jin-ah stared back, completely unimpressed, then turned away to place his order. Yep, he's good-looking, like most generic handsome people.

"Anyway, your order will be coming," she said, then turned and left.

From behind the counter, Minji observed quietly. "Well, look at that. Under all that disguise, he's just another well-dressed college boy. That's a nice dress shirt—he has good taste."

Areum emerged from the kitchen with clean dishes. Giggled "He looks like a kicked puppy. Must be used to getting different reactions.”

Beom Seok sat frozen, staring at Jin-ah's retreating figure in bewilderment. Where was the typical response—the compliments, the blushing, the stammered words?

Meanwhile, Jin ah walked to the kitchen, her mind already on the next task. She wasn't thinking about his good looks; she was thinking about which size pot to use for his order and whether the kitchen was clean enough to pass the boss lady's inspection.

A few minutes later, Jin ah returned with his steaming bowl and settled at the adjacent table with her phone, falling into the same routine as before. The normalcy of it struck him—no recognition, no performance pressure, no expectations beyond eating his meal.

This is what normal feels like, he realized, savoring his first spoonful. No spotlight, no act. Just... being myself.

As Jin ah scrolled through what appeared to be anime content on her phone, completely absorbed in her own world, Beom Seok found the peace he'd been searching for. His ego might have taken a hit from her complete indifference to his appearance, but the contentment was real.

In the quiet glow of the shop's warm lighting, with the soft sounds of closing-time cleanup around them, he was simply another customer enjoying a late-night meal.

Jang Beom Seok isn't just an idol; he's a phenomenon. As the "golden maknae" of the legendary group BTSB, he's lived his entire life under a spotlight, polished to perfection since he was a child actor. His face is on every billboard, his name is on everyone's lips, and his vanity is as famous as his talent. But after a decade of manufactured smiles and relentless scrutiny, Beom Seok is desperately lonely. He craves one thing money and fame can't buy: a normal life.

Armed with a flimsy disguise—a medical mask, a gray hoodie, and the hope that no one will look too closely—he escapes into the anonymous streets of Seoul. His sanctuary becomes a small, quiet ramyeon shop, far from the screaming fans and flashing cameras.

There, he meets Seo Jin-ah.

To Jin-ah, Beom Seok isn't a superstar; he's just "Bomsok's Fanboy"—a slightly weird, overly handsome college student who shares a name with her customer's favorite idol. She’s more likely to recognize the voice of her favorite anime character than the face of Korea's top idol. She’s blunt, unimpressed by his looks, and utterly uninterested in the glamorous world he represents.
