“It’s a wendigo?” Kaleb muttered with a shaky voice, fear escaping through his lips.
He, of course, has never seen one, but he has heard the tales. A creature tall and lanky, driven by hunger, its ribs were showing; its skin was a blueish-gray color. It had elongated arms to catch its prey, and its eyes glowed a bright, ominous red. Just when Kaleb was about to make a run for it, he saw another Wendigo coming out of the same room with the snake skull. Two wendigos were looking back at him with ravenous eyes. Confused and terrified, he thought this was the end. He wholeheartedly believed that this would be the end. The end for the two Wendigos standing right in front of him. Five times his size, he believed a mere child like himself could defeat two huge and terrifying beasts standing before him. The fear subsided, and the adrenaline for survival kicked in. Kaleb quickly shoved his shaky hand into his baggy pants pocket.
“Wow, who knew a gun would come in handy in a time like this?” Kaleb asked in a sarcastic tone before pulling out a small weapon. “Well, I did, but not for this, “Kaleb announced, out loud with a large grin gradually spreading on his face.
It was as if the wendigos understood what he was saying. The damp monster was ready to duck. Kaleb pulls out a small 9 mm pistol and shoots it cleanly into the wet Wendigo’s skull, and it goes down with a loud thud. Kaleb is a great shooter, just like his mother; he is going to carry on her legacy, and there was no way he was going to die here.
The loud bang from Kaleb’s gun brought Betsy’s attention. She knew now things weren’t going according to her plan. She slams her door open and comes upon a blue rabbit standing right in front of the doorway. She steps on it lightly, feeling its fuzzy and soft fur. She grabs it, throws it inside her room, and shuts the door behind her. Right before she entered the kitchen, she turned into a wendigo herself—a cold and frightening beast like the ones with Kaleb in the kitchen. Betsy looked different from the other two in the kitchen.
She had antler horns, and her stature was a bit smaller in size compared to the other two in the kitchen. The whole family was made out of wendigos. This was why the family was considered exceptionally talented hunters. Wendigos can hunt without making a speck of noise, and they can also see from a great distance. Betsy was still blind, but she still had a heightened sense of smell and hearing since that’s what she’d always relied on.
Just before Betsy enters the kitchen, she can smell one human and two wendigos with her acute sense of smell. She could sniff out Kaleb and the twins. When she enters the kitchen and spots Kaleb with a terrified expression on his face. He turns around and points his gun at Betsy. He didn’t know it was Betsy trying to help him, so he had no choice but to shoot her. Just before Kaleb could pull the trigger, the dry wendigo wrapped her claws around the boy’s head and lifted him off the ground. The monster’s incredible speed passed through Kaleb’s eyes, and without even realizing it, he was lifted off the ground. He could feel the monster’s grasp tighten around his head, feeling like it was going to explode.
Betsy throws an uppercut into Asa’s jaw, shocked by the impact, she accidentally drops Kaleb. Kaleb lands on his back on the wooden floor and accidentally drops his weapon. Betsy then tries her best to buy Kaleb more time to collect his gun and make a run for it. Asa wasn’t going to let up over a measly punch; she returned the favor by aiming for Betsy’s ribs. Betsy wasn’t going to be able to block a powerful punch from a beast twice her size; her arms would simply snap in half, so she used her jaw. A Wendigo’s teeth and jaw are the toughest part of its body.
With an immense force, Betsy chomps down onto Asa’s arm, successfully blocking the attack towards her ribs. Asa was in complete awe of Betsy. She somehow can see Asa’s attack coming from a mile away. Betsy has never revealed this ability to her family members before; instead, she acts weak around them. At that moment, Betsy decides to restrict Asa’s movements by grabbing her other arm. Betsy now had hold of both of her arms. Asa was backed into a corner and completely immobilized. Asa had no other choice but to use her jaw as well. Asa’s jaw opened an abnormal 180 degrees, and it was capable of ripping a palm tree into shreds. Betsy once again somehow predicted Asa’s moves. She grabs Asa’s bottom jaw and slams it shut.
