He was fourteen years old when Lewiston Lee was taken from his family and sent to the boarding school. And at fourteen, Lewiston's father was just starting to really show him how to hunt and most importantly, track. Even after he came back to the reservation after school, Lewiston didn't go out hunting much to sharpen his skills. He was mainly stuck in the office during the daytime, but thankfully, Archibald Cummings wasn't hard to track.
It was almost embarrassing on how big of a trail he left behind. Once he snuck out of the window, he ran straight behind the saloon and cut across the grass. He got to the edge of the forest, but didn't go in, instead decided to walk alongside it. Probably because it was too dark and scary for him. Lewiston couldn't help but chuckle at that thought. And finally, at least Archie was smart enough to not walk on the road that came up on the edge of the forest. Surely he could be easily found that way, but he canceled out his own genius by walking beside it a few feet away from the road. You would have to be a blind man to not be able to find him.
Lewiston followed the trail up some grassy hills in a field and there he found Archie, laying on his back with his arm over his eyes, shielding them from the sun. Completely exhausted from his journey. Lewiston hitched his horse to the nearest tree and walked over to him.
"Tired already?" He asked, making Archie jump awake. He looked up to see Lewiston standing over him with a smile on his face. "You've only been gone for forty five minutes."
In a fit of rage and fear, Archie jumped up in a sitting position and punched Lewiston in the balls. The lawyer yelled in pain and he hunched over, clinching in between his legs. Archie then quickly turned around and started racing around on all fours. He did his best to stand up at first, but lost balance and fell over again.
Before he could get any farther, Lewiston shot a bullet that kicked up dust in front of Archie, causing him to stop. He turned around to see Lewiston marching up to him with his gun drawn. Archie sat up on his knees and began mocking his lawyer by saying, "What? What are you going to do? Kill me?!"
Lewiston had enough and hit Archie across the face with his pistol. Archie landed face first on the ground. He picked his head up in a daze and touched his bottom lip. As he pulled his hand away, he saw blood trickling from his fingers from his freshly busted lip. As he wiped his bloody fingers on the grass below him, he looked up in time to see Lewiston then followed up his assault with a few kicks into the stomach, knocking the wind out of the former teacher. Still enraged, Lewiston pulled the hammer back on his pistol and pointed it at Archie who quickly covered his face with his hands.
For a moment, everything stopped. The only thing being heard was Lewiston's heavy breathing as he composed himself. Realizing that he wasn't dead, Archie peaked up from his hands.
"I dreamed for so long of doing this." Lewiston said, still pointing the gun at Archie's head. "Every night there was screaming... There were tears. Because of you. No... Not just you. You weren't the only one beating us. Starving us. Whitewashing us. No. But you were the one who killed my friend. Do you even remember her name? Do you remember any of their names?"
"No. But I remember your name," Archie said, trying to sound brave, "Anang! But Lewiston suits you so much better."
Archie started laughing as Lewiston looked at him wide-eyed. It had been so long since he heard his original name. It almost sounded weird hearing it out loud. He imagined it would sound sweet when he heard it, but coming from Archie's lips, it felt like a hot knife going through his ears. The man formerly known as Anang, took a deep breath as his former teacher kept laughing at him. Finally, Lewiston got him to shut up by grabbing a handful of hair that still clung to Archie's head. As he squirmed in pain Lewiston leaned forward and told him, "Get up and don't say another word."
Lewiston helped him up by the hair and pushed him forward. They began to walk down the hill but stopped when they saw two horsemen riding up. The lawyer hoped it was a couple of guys passing through. Two guys who didn't know who Archie was, and didn't care to know. To Lewiston's dismay however, the two men looked familiar. He wasn't sure, but they both looked like a couple of the farmhands that were standing with Sawyer on his property. Both of the horsemen and the two walkers paused when they saw each other. It took a moment or two for the two riders to recognize Archie and Lewiston, but the lawyer knew the gears in their brain kicked into place, when they reached for their rifles that were tucked away beside their saddles. The so-called fighting lawyer quickly swung Archie around by the collar and pushed him ahead as he shouted, "Go!"
He pushed Archie towards a big boulder that sat in the middle of the hill. As quick as he could, he swung his arm out with his pistol pocket in hand and fired at one of the riders. He missed of course, but it was more of a distraction to scare them and give him a chance to hide behind the boulder as well.
The two riders struggled to get their spooked horses under control as Lewiston ran as fast as he could towards the boulder. Right when he was almost there, the riders began to ride their horses towards the lawyer and his client. A bullet flew past Lewiston's head and bounced off the boulder in front of him. He swung his arm around and fired at the horseman behind him. The horseman ducked and kept riding. The other horseman rode his horse around the boulder and pointed his gun at Archie who sat curled up, trying to become one with the boulder. Lewiston blindly fired at the horseman about to shoot his client and shot off his hat.
"Jesus!" The now hatless horseman exclaimed. Between the bullet flying and his rider getting scared, the now spooked horse took off riding away from Archie.
Seeing this as his chance, Archie took off running to leave Lewison alone with the two riders. Unfortunately for him, Lewiston saw him start to run. So far, Lewiston had been shooting blindly and frantically, but for the first time in this gunfight, he took aim and took his time as he looked down the barrel of his pistol as he pointed it at Archie who was shrinking in the background. Lewiston fired and a split second later, Archie grabbed his left ass cheek and fell down.
He couldn't help but laugh as he looked around for his two enemies. It didn't take long to find them as they began to circle around the boulder as if Lewiston was a lone caravan being raided. As they continued to circle around him, the two horsemen thought they were scaring him, but instead all Lewiston saw was an opportunity. The circle they kept making, kept getting smaller and smaller. With all the perpetual loops the riders rode, Lewiston knew he could easily get out of it. All it would take was a little disruption.
He waited for one more pass, before he leaned against the boulder and took aim. After a deep breath, he fired. One of the horsemen was shot in the chest. His whole body seized up once the ball went into him, forcing his arms to tug back on the horse's reins, causing it to overreact and jump up on its hind legs and fall over on its side on the ground. Just then, the blockade was created. The other horseman came around and saw his fallen man on the ground with his horse kicking its way up again. Knowing if he kept riding, he would also be on the ground. He tried to halt his horse as quickly as he could, but wasn't fast enough, for the horse had already instinctively stopped, sending him sailing over the horse's head and landed flat on his back.
The fallen horseman tried to pick himself up off the ground and get his bearings, but he was interrupted when Lewiston shot him dead as he walked by. The smoke was settling, and the two rider's horses ran off as Lewiston calmly walked over to Archie who continued to lay on the ground, gripping his posterior.
"It seems like you caught a stray bullet," Lewiston said with a smile as he slid his pistol back into his pocket.
"You bastard!" Archie called out. "You shot me in the ass!"
"That bullet could have come from any one of us! But yeah. It was me." Lewiston said with a laugh. Archie looking pathetic as he laid on his tummy on the ground.
"I'm going to grab my horse and be right back." Lewiston told his client as he pulled out a cigarette and popped it into his mouth. "Don't go anywhere."
He let out a laugh as he left Archie laying on the ground with his left hand over his left cheek. Archie looked up at his lawyer and yelled, "Go to hell!"
