Friendly, kind-hearted, and affectionate, Pavocinis Asteras is the youngest adopted brother of the last of the Asteras family. A musician by trade and spirit, Pavo is a skilled etherling and secret half-breed, surviving with his two elder siblings in the city of Old Sarzonn.

Born in a human settlement on the fringe of D’jabareen territory, Pavocinis had a rough childhood, filled with uncertainty and terror. As is still the custom in many cities on Chromaldus, mixed-race children often faced adversity, and such was the case for Pavo’s parents. The son of a half-breed father and D’jabareen mother, Pavocinis’s only half-breed traits are tiny points at the tips of his ears. Were it not for that, he could pass for a human.

When Pavo was still a young child, his parents noticed how poorly the lad dealt with controlling sparks of ether. Manifesting his ether abilities early, Pavocinis was in great danger of becoming a wild magician—a crime punishable by execution. Desperate to prevent their only son from being killed, Pavocinis’s parents secured ether suppression stones to tamp down Pavo’s power, only for it to lead to more unfortunate results.

Pressures and conflicts from the outside forced Pavo’s parents to leave the D’jabareen settlement of Moreega, fleeing northwest to the sanctuary of Old Sarzonn. On their journey, Pavo’s condition worsened, putting the young parents at risk several times for being captured or killed by bandits and creatures alike. A mishap with Pavo’s ether core even caused the family to be ejected from a caravan heading north, and Pavo’s father doubled-down on using black rock to suppress Pavo’s ether.

Unable to cope with his parents’ well-meaning care, Pavocinis’s ether core warped and fractured, cracking beyond repair before he turned five years old. The D’jabareen child struggled with prolonged illness following his core fracture, weakening and lashing out as his frazzled parents tried to keep Pavo from collapsing. Unfortunately, it was agreed by both parents that Pavocinis was a lost cause, and the pair abandoned Pavocinis in The Dregs of Old Sarzonn.

Crying, miserable, and abandoned, Pavocinis was discovered in The Dregs by a fellow outcast, an Outsider named Aranthus. The Outsider child saw the state the southerner was in and took pity on the poor fellow, adopting Pavocinis as his little brother. Aranthus spent every waking moment trying to keep his little brother alive, often prioritizing Pavo’s well-being above his own. Though not bound by blood, these two became as close to family as one could be.

To that end, Aranthus was determined to find a safer place for the pair to live. The two brothers eventually fled The Dregs and sought shelter in the heart of the Forbidden Ruins, which, if they were captured there, would result in immediate execution. Aranthus and Pavo were forced to hide at all times, concealing themselves from discovery by both the roving bands of city guards, and Lord Vythorne’s personal Star Guards.

It wasn’t until Pavocinis had turned seven that the outcasts’ fortunes turned. Aranthus had targeted a half-breed teenager named Khazmine for his next caper, stealing a sack of bread crusts from the crafty outcast. The chase that ensued resulted in the Deceiver discovering the boys’ sailcloth lean-to, and her eventual acceptance of them as her own family. Dubbed “Lady Kiss-Me” by Pavo and Aranthus, the half-breed had no choice but to bond with them.

Eventually, Pavocinis’s ether core had crumbled into pieces, forcing Lady Kiss-Me to take drastic measures to ensure Pavo’s survival. At great personal cost, Khazmine enlisted the help of Marquis Banebury to find a cure for Pavocinis, and made several allies in the process. His ether core repaired and stabilized, Pavocinis is ever vigilant for the day where he may lose control again, or succumb to the shattering of his core.

Pavocinis’s abilities aren’t well known until he ages, but the D’jabareen man has one of the top three most dangerous ether classes on Chromaldus (revealed after the time-skip in Chapter 51). Like his sister, Pavo can also access Deceiver abilities, using optical illusions to change his appearance at will. Additionally, Pavocinis has bracingly powerful ether spark attacks, which are highly unpredictable and devastating to anything in range of them.

Funny, charming, and good-humored, Pavocinis has a gift for music, and is an engaging storyteller. Due to his early upbringing, Pavocinis is highly averse to blood or violence of any kind, and prefers to sing or make music instead of fighting. Under duress, Pavocinis can lean on either his primary abilities, or his ether sparks to defend himself, but is otherwise mostly harmless.

As of right now, Pavo’s goal is to continue to survive in the oppressive environment of Old Sarzonn. Unable to escape the city, he and his siblings strive to endure the hardships caused by Lord Vythorne’s increasing tyranny. It’s Pavo’s dream to shake off the shackles of “approved music,” and breach the crumbling ghettos of the city, spreading his music for all to enjoy.

*Character profiles are taken from the perspective of the child era, a period before the Day of Dark Skies in Tevrose. This corresponds to the first 50 chapters of “Lowlifes,” while the adult era is 13 years after the Day of Dark Skies, and includes chapters 51 and onward. Ages are listed for both periods for reference.

Next up on our character profiles for "Of Lowlifes, Lutes, & Liars" is Pavocinis Asteras. Pavo has been a fan favorite in "Lowlifes," and I couldn't wait to add him to the lineup.

Which brings me to the question of the week: If you could ask Pavo (or me) anything, what would you want to know? Leave your thoughts in the comments, and I'd be happy to take a look.

Until then, blessings and virtues to you!

Years ago there was a short lived animated sitcom called The Critic, which featured Jon Lovitz voicing a film critic (there was a crossover episode of the Simpsons. Featuring this critic judging Springfield’s film festival. Homer called him a “Film Cricket”, and so forever that is what I call them. But I digress…)

So this character’s father was rich and, due to senility, quite eccentric. In one episode he is pretending to be a superhero named El Kabong. Jay asks him why he’s called El Kabong. The father immediately hits him over the head with his guitar and shouts “Kabonngggg!”

That is what I’m picturing Pavo doing with his lute.

My brain is an idiot.
