"If it's not Jung Hyunjin – don't you get tired of luring women into your web?"
"As if I can lure you into my web," he replied, "Why don't we take a photo together?"
"And have everyone suspect a thing going on between us? No thanks."
"But let's face it Hia, you and your so-called fiancé aren't even that close. Who are you exactly fooling?"
Hia and Jun-seok were rivals. They hated themselves more than anything. They always pretended to love each other in public, strangers when the lights go off.
"No one," I replied, "And I hope you didn't eavesdrop on my conversation with Jun-seok-"
"That would be so low of me snowy," he replied, "But I must say, you are different."
"Not again," I muttered. Kang Jun-seok is already on my case. I would hate for Jung Hyunjin to catch up as well.
"You know, you are making yourself very obvious that you are not Hia."
"Can't people accept change?"
He paused, as if contemplating it. "You are right. Change is good."
"Then let me enjoy my change."
I walked away from him, greeting some of the guests as I walked past. Ms. Choi waved at me. Taking a seat next to her, I let out a sigh.
"Nice reuniting with your fiancé?"
I shook my head, "Absolutely," I replied. "Is he always that cold?"
"Yes. Surprised as to how you softened his heart."
As if it couldn't get any worse.
"Hia!"
Looking up, it was Han Suhee – Hia's rival.
"See you came back from your... long break."
"I feel brand new, the break did some wonders," I replied. Does she already know the truth?
"I can see. But I must say it was disappointing to see how you left your fiancé all alone without anyone."
I smirked, getting up, "What? Did you keep him busy?"
I leaned closer to her ear, "I know you did. That's what you always do."
Moving back, her face changed color, I patted her shoulder. "Are you okay? Or is the guilty conscience talking?"
"You will get back for this Kim Hia."
She walked away, not daring to look back. Content, I took my seat again, Ms. Choi eyes locked on me. "What happened to you?"
"What do you mean? It's the new me."
"You are more braver than I thought, your parents would be very surprised."
I tucked some hair over my ear, trying to keep the Hia act real. Between this lie of a life and the real life I was going to live, I would not have thought of anything better, though a trip to the past before the accident happened would have been nicer. 'Beggars can't be choosers' is the phrase right?
Soon, the gala event started. The best in the entertainment industry was chosen. With Hyunjin receiving an award for the best actor and a new, yet surprisingly familiar name, Park Seuno, receiving an award for the best artist in the country.
Seuno and I locked eyes, none of us wanting to look away. I gave him a smile as he did the same, walking down from the platform and back to his seat. I turned to Ms. Choi. "Are there any Seuno concerts?"
"A lot actually," she replied, keeping her eyes ahead. "You want me to book one?"
"Yes please, I would love to attend his concerts... once again."
"Great! I will let you know when the tickets are out."
"Thanks."
As the event continued, I could feel Jun-seok's eyes on me. He obviously knew I wasn't Hia but he had no proof to verify his claim. My phone then buzzed. A message from Jun-seok.
"Meet me after the gala dinner by one of the conference rooms."
I turned to him, whose cold eyes were already on me. If looks could kill, I would be dead in my second chance of life. I replied. "Why?"
Another response.
"Just follow through."
And another backlash for him.
"Try again."
"Stop it."
"Stop what?"
"Stop your games Surin."
Slowly, I turned to Jun-seok, who was getting up, moving to the row of seats I and Ms. Choi were seated on. Still, I wasn't going to back down. Whispering into my ear, he spoke. "You still want to remain stubborn, Lee Surin?"
I clenched my hands into fists. He wasn't going to get into me like this – I was never going to give him the satisfaction. Whispering to his ear this time, I replied, "You now know I am Lee Surin. What are you doing to do about it?"
He paused. He had nothing to say. He didn't think this through.
"Like I said, I am everyone's jewel – everyone loves me, and nothing can stop me."
If I needed to get him to back off, I needed another strategy.
"Jun-seok. Your name means 'handsome' and 'noble'."
He moved back, raised eyebrows as he asked, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Don't let your handsomeness and nobleness go to waste because of your cold heart."
Disrupted by the applause, thus the concluding of the dinner, we joined the others in celebration, after which, I had no choice but to follow through since Jun-seok held my hand firmly, meaning I wasn't going to be able to run away.
"Let go of me," I hissed, trying to break my hand free from his grip but with no luck.
"Not until you explain everything to me. What happened to the real Kim Hia?"
"I don't know. Jun-seok, you are going to cause a scene-"
Hyujin, with his loud voice heard from far, came rushing to us just as we were about to make our rather forced way out instead of the conference room, calling not Kim Hia, but...
"Hey, Lee Surin!"
My original name. Lee Surin.
