Sara
As usual, I was about to fall asleep at my desk, and Maddie once again saved me from falling asleep by inviting me to lunch. We arrived quickly and ordered our usual dishes. My mouth was already watering at the thought of the potatoes and stew—delicious.
The waiter arrived with my plate and as soon as I smelled it, I felt an unbearable urge to vomit, in fact, I even felt disgusted.
"Shit," I said before running to the bathroom. Luckily, I got there in time and managed to throw up inside the toilet. I felt terrible. After a few minutes, I felt someone caressing my back. I assumed it was Maddie, but then I confirmed it when she spoke.
-This isn't normal Sara- he groaned and helped me stand up, I needed it since I felt very weak- your insomnia, you're tired all day and now you're vomiting, besides you ordered your favorite dish as always and it disgusted you, there's something strange about this and you're going to take a pregnancy test right now.
-Maybe you're scaring me for nothing, Maddie.- I wet my face with ice water and stared at my appearance, I was a zombie.
"It's not that I'm scaring you, Sara, but take this seriously!" he exclaimed. "I know you have doubts, and what better time than now to find out."
Before I thought about the situation any further, it was best to listen to my friend's advice and take the test just in case. I didn't want to keep thinking about what might happen. I couldn't stop her, and she left immediately, I guess to a pharmacy. I sat on the toilet seat and covered my face with my hands.
I hadn't checked my phone lately, so I was surprised when I received a notification saying I was a week and a half late for my period.
My period hadn't come and I hadn't noticed.
"How silly," I whispered.
The idea of getting pregnant terrified me. I preferred her to come when I was in a stable relationship, not one I knew would end at any moment. We wouldn't be short of money, since I was earning very well at this company. The only problem I saw I could have right now was with Kenneth.
To put my mind at ease, I went to our table and called the waiter, who was already a little scared to see us suddenly disappear without paying. I took advantage of the opportunity and immediately returned to the bathroom. Ten minutes later, Maddie returned with a bag, which she handed to me. I opened it, and inside were four pregnancy tests of different brands.
"We have to be sure," she justified herself. "Go to the bathroom, don't continue with this intrigue."
I went back into the bathroom and mentally prepared myself. I opened the box and took out the first test. I glanced at the instructions. Finally, I sat down and urinated on the stick. I did the same with the others. When I finished, I lined them up and turned them over. I spent the next five minutes sitting on the toilet lid. When the alarm went off, I plucked up my courage, closed my eyes, and turned each test over. It was time, and I slowly opened my eyes.
Two lines on the first one.
Two stripes on all.
Positive.
Shit.
I left the cubicle and showed the first test to Maddie.
"Fuck," Madison said upon seeing him, "and what do the others say?"
"They're all positive," I said, running my wet hand over my face to cool it off.
-Fuck, Sara, you must have been pregnant for a while now. You need to see a gynecologist urgently. Okay, now, mmm... What are you going to do with Kennet?
"I'll tell him, he deserves to know. What I'm afraid of is his reaction. When I was doubting I was pregnant, I asked him, and he almost went crazy over the question," I said. Slowly, I felt the urge to cry wash over me, my eyes completely blurring.
"Fine," I whispered, "if he doesn't want to take responsibility, then he can go to hell! You'll have me and your mother, you can handle this." Maddie realized I was about to cry and immediately hugged me, and I was finally able to release all the pressure and the thousands of emotions I was feeling.
"I'm afraid of not being able to handle this, of not having Kennet's support, and I could say, above all, of being a bad mother," she sobbed.
"Sara, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Talk to Kennet as soon as possible. Don't worry about what might happen. And about the other thing, you can't know if you'll be a bad mother, even though something tells me you'll be an amazing one. No one is born knowing how to raise a baby, but believe me, if I feel you're doing something wrong with him, I'll tell you. He's not even born and already has someone who's going to spoil him."
I laughed at her comment and wiped my tears with a piece of paper Maddie gave me. I couldn't die over this, or over my baby's father's reaction, because now I had to give my all. I never imagined having a baby or being a mother, but now I had to get used to the idea because there was someone who needed me.
Well, now the problem was Kennet.
