Chapter 8: Why is my memory worse than an ancient computer?

Chapter 8: Why is my memory worse than an ancient computer?

Oct 26, 2025

As I arrived at school on Monday I was bombarded by homecoming banners and posters. Good thing I bought two dresses at the boutique last year when they had a BOGO sale, because I doubt I will have time to shop while investigating my mom with Remy.
I wonder how quickly Remy will find a new lead. He already knew about the creek so he may know about other things too. He also lives with a lot of people so I'm sure he's privy to information others don't have.
"Elora, are you okay?" Kevin tapped me on the shoulder.
"Yeah, just a little distracted. How are you, Kev?"
I was so caught up on thinking about everything that had been happening that I realized I was totally ignoring Kevin.
"I'm great aside from the visual abuse I'm enduring from these HOCO posters. Who do you think decorated them?" Kevin chuckled to himself, clearly amused at his own joke. I decided to play along, "I don't know, but they need to be fired."
"Do you have a date or are you and Eleanor gonna force Conroy to take you two again?" Kevin teased, not able to contain himself from laughing fully this time.
"I don't have a date, but I'm thinking of going with Remy. We've been talking lately." I replied confidently. I was proud I had someone to possibly go with, although there is nothing wrong with going with a friend's brother.
"Don't." Kevin stopped in his tracks, looked straight at me and repeated his prior statement, "Don't."
"Why?" I scrunched my forehead. It's unusual for Kevin to act too serious. Especially in cases like this.
"He's bad news. I've heard he's up to some sketchy stuff. Besides, you don't actually believe he would seriously go with you. Even if he did, I bet he'd do it so he could make fun of you later. I don't want to see you get hurt." Kevin's voice grew more aggressive with every breath. He was serious.
I couldn't necessarily argue with the sketchy part, Remy did seem to know about the drug deals at the creek and never really disclosed how he found out. However, I don't see Remy going with me to make fun of me. His feelings seem too genuine; besides, why would his brother tease him if he didn't really like me?
I know Kevin doesn't like me, so I don't think this is jealousy. No, there is something else going on. Kevin's known Remy longer since he has come here since elementary school so perhaps something happened between them in the past. I'll have to ask Remy about it later.
I was half asleep in most of my morning classes, so I can't recall anything interesting from them. However, when lunch came around I made sure to sit by Remy. Well, it has become a routine of ours ever since I sat with him that one day.
"Remy, did you and Kevin ever get into some fight in the past?" I turned to him suspiciously, but trying to keep my tone causal.
"No, why?" Remy looked back at me confused.
"Kevin seems to be wary of you. I wasn't sure if something happened. I've only been here for a a little over year, so I wasn't sure if you two had some sort of history." I tried to explain, I didn't want to cause drama, but I did want to get to the bottom of the issue.
"No. Kevin actually only started coming here a few weeks before you did. Isn't that why you two became friends, because you were both the new kids?" Remy tilted his head, confused at how I seemingly didn't know something about Kevin that he did.
"That's weird. I thought Kevin told me that he has always lived here. I must be confusing him with someone else. Poor Kev!  He was my first friend here and I didn't even remember that he was new too."
"It's okay. Everyone forgets something at some point. I wouldn't worry too much." Remy responded, clearly worried despite telling me not to.
But I was worried. Not just because I forgot, but because I still had no answers as to why Kevin was weary of Remy. Must be because Kevin knows that Remy knows that sketchy stuff is happening at the creek by Gnawville.
At this point though, I trust Remy enough that if he doesn't want to disclose how he found out about the creek, I'll let it go. He's on my side, and he said he'd help keep me safe while I investigated my mom. Who cares what Kevin thinks of my life choices! If I want to go to homecoming with Remy, I'll go with to homecoming with Remy and he can get over it.
Remy was talking about something he saw on TV last night but I wasn't listening. I haven't been listening for the last five minutes in all honesty. So halfway through his sentence I decided to make my proposal.
"Remy, will you go to homecoming with me?" I turned looking for his response but instead I was met with his collapse onto the floor. His dramatic reactions will never fail to amuse me.
"I'm taking that as a yes."
Justin helped Remy get off the floor while I got to work scrolling through my phone to find a picture of my dress.
"We are wearing pink. If you can't pick out something to wear, ask Justin for help."
