Chapter 9: Your Parrot is Bullying Me

Chapter 9: Your Parrot is Bullying Me

Nov 02, 2025

That night I got off the bus to my quaint little house and immediately pulled my gray hoodie over my head. It reminds me of the one Remy wears everyday, except smaller.
I made my way to the swing attached to the big pine tree outside and started rocking gently to my own tune. Pine trees make the worst bases for swings, as their needles constantly shower down. But I REFUSE to move my swing to another tree because I must live with the consequences of my own actions, not because I'm lazy or anything...
After I start moving, I feel my jaw loosen, my shoulders lower, and I start to really take in the spicy air. The weather is a gentle 50 degrees Fahrenheit with a crispy fall breeze. I swear I see daisies in the yard, but I must be mistaken. Most daisies are dead by this time of year. I ignore this fact, though, and enjoy the moment since daisies are my favorite.
PING!
And another wonderful moment has been ruined.
R: I think I have a lead on your mom. It's related to what's going on at the creek.
E: Realz?
R: Yes, but it's going to require a minor misdemeanor.
E: Coun me ins!
R: I'll be over in 15.
This is great! Remy has only been in on things for a day and he's already finding leads for me. And based on my interaction with Bennett Shade, my mom has connected to what's going on the creek.
I don't want Eleanor knowing about my mom, but I did promise her that I would update her on any leads related to the creek... I'll just keep things vague.
E: Hej! Foynd a leadz on he creek
Eleanor: YAY! I'll be over in 10
E: U cam stay hone. Rem is taking me
Eleanor didn't reply, and I assumed that it was because she was sulking. However, I was quickly proved wrong as she jumped out of her sedan and ran her way to my front porch.
"WHAT THE HECK! YOU THINK YOU CAN REPLACE ME WITH REMY SMITH! GIRL I AINT GOING NO WHERE SO YOU BETTER GET USED TO IT."
Before Eleanor could scold me anymore, though, Remy and Justin pulled into my driveway. As soon as they parked and exited the car she turned from yelling at me to scolding at them.
"REMY SMITH! I have a bone to pick with you! First things first, I want you to know that I am Elora's number one, okay. I am the president, you are the vice president. The only way you get to take my place is if I die, okay?" Eleanor ripped into him before he even had a chance to speak.
"YOU TELL HIM GIRL!" Justin clapped out.
"Yeah. You think you can waltz in here and take my place as the investigation partner." Eleanor put her hands on her hips.
"No, you cannot." Justin wagged his finger.
Remy and I look over at one another, silently communicating what would likely be a doomed quiet break-and-enter scheme. During this time, Eleanor decided it was time to pull Tickles from the car; after-all, you can't leave your pets unattended in a car.
"You look like a toad." Tickles screamed.
"Girl, is that a parrot?" Justin looked thoroughly appalled.
"Obviously." Eleanor croaked.
"You do realize we are planning to break into someone's house." Justin said, reflecting his level of shock and disapproval with his entire body.
"Yes, and?" Eleanor spat without a single doubt.
"And why do you have a parrot?" Justin said, not understanding how we could remain discrete with a very loud parrot.
"He's my cover. If I get caught, it's because I'm rescuing my baby from being kidnapped." Eleanor sang, proud of her ability to make any excuse to parade her parrot around.
"No one's gonna buy that. You're better off taking him or her home." Justin recommended.
"TICKLES IS STAYING! PERIOD!" Eleanor protested.
"Your hairline is thinning!" Tickles spoke, staring right at Justin.
"Tell em Tickles" Eleanor rubbed Tickles chin, rewarding him for her bad behavior.
"EXCUSE YOU! My hairline is NOT thinning, but you look like you could use a pruning." Justin placed his hand on his hip. I wasn't sure what was worse, Eleanor toting a demented bird around or Justin trying to pick a fight with said bird.
"YOU DID NOT JUST INSULT MY BABY!" Eleanor pointed.
"YOUR BABY IS DERANGED!" Justin swayed.
"YOU"RE DERANGED!" Eleanor stepped closer to Justin.
"TAKE YOUR ABUSIVE PAROT AND GO HOME!" Justin stepped closer to Eleanor. If this continued, I didn't doubt it could turn physical.
I turned to Remy, "Should we break this up?"
"No, I think we are better off just leaving before they realize we are gone." Remy grabbed my hand and started to lead me away.
"True, true," I replied as I followed him silently back to the car.
Once we successfully made it into the car without them, Remy started up the engine, and they both turned and raced into the back, abusive parrot included.
"I'm willing to make a truce, but you have to tell me the lore behind, is it Tickles," Justin turned to Eleanor.
"Yes, Tickles. Pronouns he/him." Eleanor replied.
"Noted. Anyway, I need to know the story behind Tickle's colorful vocabulary." Justin smirked.
"My brother is mean."
"I didn't realize Conroy had a nasty streak in him." Justin gasped, placing a hand on his chest.
"He doesn't. It's our younger brother Theodore. He's psycho but at least I never have to worry about intruders breaking into our house. He would destroy them." Eleanor spoke, her tone expressing that she wasn't sure if she should be proud or embarrassed.
Remy and I look at one another again, smirking. I don't know about him, but I was using all the self control I had to stop myself from laughing. At least they were back to being on good terms with one another. I just wonder where exactly Remy is taking me to break into and what we may find?
