Sara
The two days since I told Kennet about my pregnancy had been incredibly awkward, but neither of us talked about it, and I continued doing my job as usual. I think it was the best thing for me; I didn't want to be hurt any more than I already was. So I mostly ignored him.
Today was my first ultrasound, and more than anything, I wanted to confirm that what I was carrying in my belly was real, even though it felt that way. I had only been pregnant for a short time.
I always loved children and loved the idea of having one of my own, but the idea of having to build a home for a baby on my own made me uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I had Maddie's support, and I was sure I'd have my mom's.
"Sara, I want to come with you," Maddie begged, pouting. Since yesterday, Maddie insisted on coming with me to the appointment, and I was grateful since I felt completely alone, but as strange as it may sound the first time, I prefer being alone.
-Maddie, I really love you, but I want to go even if it's just alone the first time. After that, you can accompany me to all the appointments you want. - I replied, grabbing my bag. It was time for me to leave.
"Fine, but you know I'll join you for the others," I nodded with amusement and ended our conversation.
I took the elevator down and headed for the clinic, which luckily was close by, so I wouldn't have to take a taxi. When I arrived at the clinic, I went to the information desk, registered with the secretary, and had to answer a short questionnaire.
I waited for a while, looking around me. I was so enthralled by the baby pictures and warnings about what could affect a pregnancy that I didn't hear when they called me over the loudspeakers and I walked quickly to the room where the gynecologist would see me.
"Good morning," I greeted when I opened the door.
-Good morning, Miss Sara, sit down. What is the reason for your visit?- asked the doctor, looking at me closely.
-Well, I took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. I want to confirm the pregnancy and, if so, find out if everything is going well- I responded with a little anxiety.
"Good," she said and nodded, "when was your last period?"
-I don't remember, but I'm about a week and a half late.
The doctor asked me more questions until he told me to take off my pants in the dressing room and then wait for him on the stretcher while he handed me a gown. I left the dressing room already in my gown and lay down on the stretcher.
"Since it's small, according to you, it'll have to be a vaginal ultrasound, so I'll insert this inside you." He shows me a rod with a condom on it. I feel a little pain when he inserts it, but then when he starts moving it inside me, it just becomes discomfort.
I felt very anxious for the doctor to speak while he seemed to be focused on the screen where I only saw darkness.
"That's right, miss, you're pregnant. That dot you see there"—she points at something on the screen—"is your baby."
