The same sweet scent wafted around him once more and his mouth watered. Lifting his nose to the air, he inhaled deeply, letting it guide him over to one of the overturned rubbish bins.
Collapsing to his knees, he dug through the trash until he found the source of the sickenly sweet smell.
A dead cat. Its body stiff and flattened. Its white fur was damp, dirty, and matted. Maggots wriggled in and out of its mouth, nose, and eyes.
He didn't hesitate. He brought the cat to his lips and sunk his teeth into its spine, ripping it out. The sweetness flooded his senses, like the best opium money could buy, sending shivers throughout his entire body.
For a moment, clearning the fog that had settled in his bones.
Somewhere, in the back of his mind, he was disgusted at the revolting action. He begged for someone to stop him, but he was unable to stop himself from devouring the rotting carcass.
It was getting harder for him to remain focused as he crammed the last bit of cat down his throat. Ignoring the pain of its sharp bones tearing and jabbing into the inside of his throat.
That feeling of emptiness wasn't satisfied and he let out a cry of dispair.
He was so hungry! He dragged his hands through his hair, it came out in clumps but he didn't see, to notice.
More! More! More!
He needed more!
The sound of laughter caught his attention and he staggared to his feet and followed the noise. His movements unwilling and jerky.
In the late evening light, he followed the sounds of people, the closer he got the hungier he bacame and the more his sanisty slipped from his grasp.
By the time he rounded the corner, his control was now forfit. Handed over to whatever the beastly creature had taken dominion in his body.
Who he had once been was no more, in his place was something worse...
They built their walls to keep the Blight from spreading. Only those with power and influence were allowed inside.
But the Sickness does not see walls. It does not care for wealth or power. It does not care if one is dressed in silks and finery or cheap cotton. It has no honor. It Infects all the same.
And once it reaches inside the Walls there will be no hope left. No king, nor army will be able to stop the Blight from spreading.
All you can do is hide and hope that the gods are merciful.
