The waiter behind the counter seemed a little confused by the leader’s remark but brushed it off with a “O-okay? Thank you and have a good night!” Liam wondered just how long he was standing there and when did Ryan show up exactly but it didn’t matter too much to him at the moment. He did it again, he was too caught up in his own head. It was simply a passing thought amidst the overwhelming fear he felt while thinking about his master. He can’t afford to fail.
The leader frowned at his new teammate’s frozen features. Shaking his head out of his own thoughts, Ryan gleamed, “I know the best place in town to get ice-cream.” He swung his arm around Liam’s shoulders to guide him out of the Japanese restaurant at which the teammate flinched at first. Ryan’s smile faltered for a moment but he continued, “You're gonna love it! They got, like, 50 flavors! And a whole bunch of toppings too!” The two men then made their way down the well-lit street to get dessert at the leader’s favorite ice-cream shop.
The area where the ice-cream shop was located wasn’t a very active neighborhood at night. The shop stood at the corner of the block, surrounded by streets that were lit but not as brightly as a large, busy street would be. The street lights being placed further apart from each other also seemed not as bright. The only other lights were neon shop signs or lit billboards. The brightest sign was that of the ice cream shop and even at this hour, in the dead of night, there was a queue to get your sweet treat. The two men stood in the line waiting their turn, one more impatiently than the other.
Liam was deep in thought, as he often was tonight. He thought, “Why is this so damn hard?” He absent-mindedly moved forward as the line progressed, Ryan kept thinking out loud to himself about which ice-cream he was gonna get. He continued, “I am an assassin, I do as I’m told without question. Especially with that witch…” He stepped ahead again as the line did. “No. Failure is simply not an option. I will do it.”
“Hi, welcome to Handy’s Ice-cream! What’ll we be having today?” greeted the young employee loudly. She smiled at them with her silver braces in full display.
“She’s way too perky for someone working at this hour,” complained Liam internally “Then again, who am I to judge?”
“Hmph. I’m fine with whatever,” he grunted to which Ryan chuckled nervously in response then turned to the employee.
“A-alright… He’ll take whatever… Ooh! Just give us your favorite order. Thanks!” The leader continued to converse with the cashier to pay for the desserts, which Liam was supposed to pay by the way but definitely forgot about again. He was more focused on his goal, working up his courage to do what he must. He stared at Ryan while unconsciously taking the ice-cream that he held out for him. His serious gaze narrowed, his jaw tightened and a darkness fell over his features as he continued staring. He will do it.
