The Legion's Trials

A Foreword to Book One "Why Do We See Ghosts?"

A Foreword to Book One "Why Do We See Ghosts?"

Oct 03, 2025

Hello and welcome! My name is LankyTigerDog, or Lanky for short, and I wanted to start off by saying that I greatly appreciate you taking the time to take a gander at my work. I honestly didn’t expect this project to become as big as it did, but that’s usually how these types of things end up. This initially began as an attempt at completing the 2024 National November Writing Month challenge, but I realized that I wouldn’t be able to do this project justice with the limitations of that challenge. So, what began as a short story has transformed into a multi-book series.

For many of you, I’m assuming you are coming here because of your familiarity with Wanted by Beasts or other projects by its creator, but for everyone else, WBB is the brainchild of online creator June Gustin (a.k.a. ActuallyRea on various plantforms). It’s a concept of a dystopian cyberpunk world that features a mix of human and anthro characters, as well as more fantastical elements like aliens and supernatural creatures. For me, this setting and concept helped me break through some very intense art block that I had been dealing with, and finally put my bizarre mashup of ideas together into a (hopefully) cohesive story.

To those familiar with WBB, there will be some discrepancies between this story and the setting June created, and I will not be featuring any of their characters. Although I enjoy cyberpunk settings, I tend to find myself more curious about what lies beyond the mega-city skylines and country-sized industrial facilities. How do the smaller communities function? How does technology like cybernetic augmentation affect the lives of people in those communities? What cultural differences develop in more isolated areas? These are some of the ideas I wanted to explore in The Legion’s Trial, even if it clashed with the established canon.

With all that said, this is my first major writing project that I will be publishing anywhere. As such, I expect people will have thoughts and suggestions on how my writing could improve. Please feel free to leave comments or send them to lankytigerdogcritiques@gmail.com or on twitter @lLankyTigerDog.

Please tune in every other week for new uploads and thank you so much for reading!!

First! Hah. Also looking forward to reading, that sort of frontier/smalltown shadowrun style setting sounds interesting
