The next day, Peter was the first to come knocking on Luke's door. Luke was already awake, drinking coffee and scrolling though his phone, looking at news from other Packs. He found out that twenty two deaths were reported in the last seventy two hours. They were all werewolves.
The Council had issued a statement reporting that they were investigating the matter. The Council was lazy, Luke knew because all they did was enjoy the benefits of being on top, but when it was time to deliver, they just dragged their feet.
They were a bunch of old farts that reaped benefits from sitting on their comfortable chairs and letting their subordinates do the work.
Peter entered, looking healthier than ever, making Luke smile in relief when he saw him. He put his phone down on the table, then stood up, giving Peter a hug.
"I'm so glad you're well. How are you feeling?" Luke asked, sitting back down on his chair, with Peter joining him.
"I'm feeling great. Thank you for the antidote. You saved my life," he said, grateful for his Alpha. Not many Alpha's would do what Luke did. The man risked his life for him.
Luke just shrugged, then filled Peter in what's been happening. He even showed him the article from the Councils, to which he scoffed at their fake heartfelt words.
Everyone knew that the Council did not care about them. They didn't care about the Packs, they only cared about the money they received from the Packs. Every Pack paid a certain amount to the Council every month. Luke called it tax, but the Council didn't call it that. They called it money to help the struggling Packs, but everyone knew that the way the members of the Council were so filthy rich, they benefitted from the Packs' monthly payments.
Luke told Peter about Beta Sierra of Creek Pack and her offer. Peter was even surprised that Luke agreed to do business with the Creek, but Luke told him that it was Sierra who managed to arrange the antidote. It was business, nothing more.
"Do you think we should really form an alliance with them? Are they to be trusted?" Peter voiced out his concerns, drinking his tea that Luke made for him.
"They're not to be trusted, but we really need to look into the Pack that's attacking us. Next thing we know, they'll have wiped our Pack. Creek Pack needs us, but we need them more," Luke replied, going back to his phone.
"Let's say we agree to the alliance. Who's going to chase after the lead?"
Luke sighed, Peter's questions tiring him. "Obviously you can't go because Diana needs you, and congratulations by the way. You're going to be a father."
Peter's cheeks reddened, making Luke laugh at his embarrassment.
"Thank you. What about Tamera and Shanell? Or Macey even?" Peter suggested.
Luke quickly shut the idea down. He was not putting his girls in danger by allowing them to chase after a lead. They were capable and could do the job much better, but he wanted to be selfish and let them not be exposed to the danger out there. He loved them too much to put their lives in danger.
"You know what? We'll decide what will happen after we meet with Sierra and hear what's her plan," Luke said, standing up to put his cup in the sink. He leaned against the cupboard after.
"Alright. Send me her details and I'll arrange the meeting. When do you want us to meet?"
"By the end of this week. We can't wait any further because those wolves are in our territory. Get Clark, Zoe, Lily and Tom to track those wolves in the town." Those were their best Trackers in the Pack.
"I'm on it. I'll also arrange for Macey, Shanell and Robert to have a look at the other towns to see if they could find anything." Peter stood up, leaving his empty cup on the table, making Luke roll his eyes. The man didn't like to clean after himself.
"And don't forget to arrange that meeting," Luke reminded.
Peter nodded, then made his way out of the room.
When he was gone, Luke went to prepare for the day. He wanted to patrol his town and maybe ask a few questions to the ones that lived in the town.
Later in the morning, he had Jack, a Tracker; Mia, a Truth Seeker, she could tell when someone was lying or telling the truth; and Roddy, a warrior. He was armed with those three people by his side.
"Are you sure about this?" Peter asked for the umpteenth time.
"We're not going to do anything. I'm tired of being holed up in the House. Consider it as my day off."
"But you'll be working. Can't you just not work for one day?"
Luke sighed, already feeling like Peter was just stalling. "I'll see you later, Peter." He started the car, making Peter shake his head in disappointment. Luke didn't care. His Pack was not going to protect itself.
They drove out of the perimeter, with Mia fiddling with the radio. Luke didn't say anything. He was soft to his Pack, hence they were comfortable around him. He was easy going and overall gentle, but not to the point that he lost respect. His members respected him, but not to the point where it was uncomfortable for all of them.
Jack and Roddy at the back were minding their own business, having a light chatter.
Luke was focused on driving, but his mind was working on overtime. His mind wandered to Sierra and her proposition, but he wondered if Rolus did give her the permission.
For someone who was not lying, she panicked when Luke asked her if Rolus knew. The problem was that Luke knew how it was bad to get into business with another Pack when their leader was not aware. It could create problems bigger than Rolus and him.
He made plans to drive by Creek Pack when they returned to meet with Rolus. He didn't want any problems, especially now that he was trying to make peace.
They drove for thirty minutes until they reached their destination.
He turned around to look at Jack and Roddy when he parked. "I want you two to call a cab and go around the town, asking anyone if they've come across unfamiliar wolves. And also go to the hotels to ask around. You have enough cash?"
Jack nodded, then they bid farewell to Mia and Luke.
"What are we doing?" Mia asked, looking at Luke.
"We'll be visiting our members in the town. Maybe they know something."
Luke started the car and drove to their first house.
The first house they visited was where an elderly woman lived with her three grandkids. It was Mrs Fitch. When she opened the door for the Alpha, she was surprised.
"Alpha, greetings," she bowed, then opened the door to let them in. The house was a mess, throw pillows everywhere, dirty dishes on the coffee table and there was a stink. It wasn't too noticeable, but because of their strong sense of smell, both Mia and Luke smelled it.
Mia had scrunched up her nose, her face filled with disgust.
Mrs Fitch offered them tea, but Mia was the one who denied, suspicious.
"Mrs Fitch, there were scents of unknown wolves in the town. Do you know anything?" Mia asked, studying her body language.
"No, no. Oh my, what happened? Are we in danger?" she asked, her wrinkly face frowning.
"We're not in danger. We just want to be cautious," Luke reassured, smiling. His eyes wandered to the staircase, when he thought he saw a shadow. The house was dark, the curtains not drawn to let the light in. It was too depressing. He wondered how Mrs Fitch hadn't gone crazy.
"Who's here now? Are your children home?" Mia was referring to her grandkids.
Mrs Fitch shook her head, saying, "They went to school, dear. They are good children."
Mia glanced at Luke, shaking her head. Luke already knew that Mrs Fitch was hiding something.
She was fidgeting, her eyes not staying in one place for too long. She was restless and her heartbeat was too quick to ignore.
"Is it okay if I have a look around the house?" Mia asked, crossing her arms when Mrs Fitch made an excuse.
"I haven't cleaned yet. It's too dirty upstairs,"
"It's okay. You should see my room back at the Pack House. This is nothing," she was lying. The girl was a neat freak. She had took it upon herself to remind the Pack every now and then to clean after themselves.
"B-but, I have to clean," she fretted, making Luke even more suspicious.
"Mia, go have a look upstairs. I'll stay with Mrs Fitch here," he ordered. Mia wasted no time in going upstairs.
"What's up there?" he asked her, crossing his arms.
Mrs Fitch fiddled with her fingers, nervous. She was also looking down.
"What's up there, Mrs Fitch?" Luke raised his voice. He hated doing that to an old lady, but her behaviour was unacceptable.
"N-nothing, Alpha. There's nothing. It's just my cat," she replied, still looking down.
Luke didn't appreciate her looking down instead of looking at him. Since he didn't want to upset the woman and make her nervous any further, he swallowed his irritation.
"You want some tea? I promise, I make the best teas," she was desperate now. He didn't like her behavior. She was too sneaky, too nervous.
"Mrs Fitch, I don't want anything."
"What about scones? I baked last night. Cookies?"
He was ready to tear her a new one when Mia descended down the stairs, her face too disgusted.
"What?" he asked.
Mia just shook her head and gestured for them to leave.
Mia grabbed Luke's hand and dragged him out, even when he protested.
They were outside when Mia made gagging noise, bending over and trying to vomit.
"What the hell?" he snapped, looking away.
Mia was forcing herself to vomit.
"Stop it, Mia. Let's go," he went to grab her hand and took her to the car.
"What happened? What did you find?" he asked when he started the car, pulling out of the driveway.
"She's got too many cats up there. The place is filled with cat poop and I couldn't even tell if some was hers or her grandkids. That place is a pigsty. It stinks up there too. Those cats, some look like rats. I don't think they're taking care of them too well."
Luke grimaced, too disgusted too.
"Do you think they're farming them?" Mia asked, fiddling with the radio.
"What are you saying?" he glanced at her.
"I mean that they're planning to eat them. Who in their right minds keeps so many cats? I counted about twenty two and I'm sure there's many more. How does she live in a house like that?"
Luke didn't even want to entertain her assumptions. That was sick. Eating cats? He shuddered at the thought.
They went house to house, asking questions and then searching if Mia felt like they were being dishonest.
Some claimed to have caught a whiff of four unknown wolves going around the town.
There was a woman by the name of Terra, who claimed she had seen those wolves. She said it was two females and two males. One man was black and one woman had tattoos on her neck.
Another man claimed he had seen them too, having the same description as Terra.
Luke and Mia ended their visits when it was nearing three in the afternoon. They messaged Jack and Roddy to meet them at one of their hotels, at Lunar Palace. They planned on having their lunch there and thereafter, going to Creek Pack to meet with their Alpha.
Luke and Mia were already eating their lunch when Jack and Roddy arrived. They bowed to their Alpha, then joined them.
