It had been nearly ten years since their acquaintance began. Yet “friendship” would perhaps be too generous a term. They were not companions in the truest sense, but rather two souls who had long drifted within each other’s orbit, never fully colliding. Such, at least, was what they allowed themselves to believe; their hearts, however, whispered a different tale.
They had only just concluded their years at the secondary school, that threshold between youth and the wide, uncertain world beyond. Hyeon, steadfast and practical, had resolved to forgo further studies, choosing instead to tread the path his father had laid before him. Byeongsu, on the other hand, had cast his lot with ambition: he entered a singing audition and, to the admiration of many, secured his place among the finalists.
Pah, I am weary. Weary beyond words. Each day, my sustenance is nothing but the relentless task of extinguishing human lives. It never ceases. Time holds no meaning for them. Whether I am ailing, near death, or otherwise unfit, I am still summoned to carry out their will. My purpose is singular: to erase all who betray them, to ensure that their existence is wiped from the face of the earth.
Krriing!
Ah, that voice again. My life is truly bound in chains. I have been severed from the outside world; every channel that might connect me to it has been carefully cut off by their hands. The only notification that ever appears on my phone comes from them.
“Byeongsu, trainee from XXX Entertainment. Bring him to headquarters.”
Byeongsu. The name struck a faint chord within me, echoing somewhere in the recesses of my memory. Yet who was he? Before I could dwell upon it, the call was abruptly terminated. Whether I wished it or not, the task had been set. I was to bring him in.
