Chapter 12
We enter the subway, surprisingly there’s no NeuroSick, just a subway. I notice a fuzzy cloud. “Contamination.”
My gas mask materialises around my face, fitting snug and filtering air correctly. Vesper looks at me then back at his gas mask, that he pulls out of his bag and puts on over his face. I almost laugh at the old design of it but then he sighs. I begin to walk into the haze, realising it’s just dead air, I’m about to collapse my mask until I see a dead NeuroSick and a scratching. The body is covered in blood and there’s guns on the floor, a trail leading to a door, it had a sign on it that said, high voltage, there was loud breathing and the occasional screaming. I pressed my back to the wall then gestured Vesper to stay behind a wall. I open the door. There room is a mess, there’s blood and guts everywhere, smeared up the wall and all along the floor, I see a mangled corpse and then there’s a NeuroSick tangled in electrically wires screeching and clawing at the wires, it’s trapped and trying to escape the trap it’s caught itself in. I quickly end it with a shot from my laser blaster.
Vesper walks over and looks into the room, her immediately turns away and I hear a noise, all the hair on my neck stands up and I see Vesper leaning over a pile of throw up that is now on the floor. I place a hand on his back as an attempt to comfort him, holding his hair back as he continues to throw up onto the floor.
“You alright?”
He manages to put a thumb up before he wipes his face on his sleeve then he takes a swig of water and straightens himself up and leans against the wall. He then walks over to the metal door and shuts it. I look at the air and see a cluster of airborne nano bots. “Vesper, we should move on…”
I begin to walk into the subway, I jump down onto the tracks and walk along them. I see a train ahead, there’s an open window in the back, I jump and grab onto the back of the train, the train had molded and rusted from years of neglect. I scramble through the window then open the door and pull Vesper into the train carriage. There’s so much waist and blood… and bodies that liter the carriage. I walk down the carriage opening a purse I find and taking a couple hair ties out of it. Slipping them into my pocket then I open another carriage door. I hear a bang on the roof of the train. Vesper jumps, his arm grabbing mine and he turns to face behind him. He’s shaking and I turn to look at what’s behind us. It’s a NeuroSick, it’s not just a normal one… it’s head looks larger and it’s got plates of nano bots on it like armour. I immediately grab Vesper, shoving him behind me. “Vesper, I want you to create as much distance between you and that thing. I’ll follow once you’re at a safe distance.”
He looks at me then at the thing. “No. I’m not leaving you!”
The thing keeps creeping closer. I open the carriage door, shoving him through, turning to follow but then the thing jumps onto me, my arm that was on the door, slamming the door shut, I elbow the thing in the face and then attempt to grab my gun but it’s on the floor, I try to grab it but I feel my legs being pulled and I’m being dragged down the carriage. I feel my pulse quicken as I’m dragged. I scramble to grab a knife from my pocket, when I get my hand on it. I stab the thing in the shin. It’s grip on my loosens and I kick it off me. I shamble up and run towards my gun, I pick it up, then I attempt to open the door but can’t. Vesper’s still standing on the other side of the door. “Vesper, run now. I’ll find another exit to the carriage.”
He nods, running down the carriages and looking for an open exit. I turn my gun to the thing that’s approaching me and it grabs my arm then stares at me. It sniffs me before it lets go of my arm and backs away slightly. It then walks out the carriage. I hear yells and then a gunshot and then a crash as Vesper breaks a window of the carriage I’m in then I climb out the window before that thing comes back. I fall onto a platform and he then grabs me, holding my shoulders.
“Liora? Are you hurt?”
I shake my head. “I don’t think so. “We’re here… I think…”
He nods at me. I walk up the stairs of the station with him. He smiles before placing a hand on my back and he removes his hand at the feeling of blood. “You’re bleeding. Liora…”
I shrug. “It’ll heal, we should set up camp for the night.”
He nods then keeps staring at my back. Before shaking his head and focusing on what I just said. “Right. Camp…”
He stares at me before walking down a street until we see a small store that we walk into, it’s empty mainly and there’s no blood, the doors are boarded up and the door is jammed. I open a window in the back and climb through. I sat down on the floor; shut the shutter after Vesper climbed in. Vesper gets out a small little thing from his bag that he presses and it lights up. I smile at it. He then grabs a small little sleeping bag and blanket that he lays down on the ground. I sit down crossing my legs pulling out my satchel and grabbing the water bottle he gave me. He smiles. “You kept it.”
I nod. He nods back, we sit in silence before he tucks himself into the sleeping bag then rests his eyes. I sit against the wall, feeling myself fall asleep, but I can’t let my guard down. “Oyasumi… Vesper.”
“Yoru, Liora.”
He speaks his voice: calming, like a sedative…
