It might not have been very long since Jack had discovered his gift for reading wolfshifters’ futures in the ordinary cards he had, or the crystal ball that wasn’t made of crystal, but so far, he’d been right about everything. Vince observed his cute companion, while Jack stole looks he thought sly at Theodore, who was piloting the aircraft with the assured ease of someone who had done so many times before.

“Tell me more about those cards and what they’re saying.” Vince pulled Jack underneath his arm, enjoying the way the spunky hedgehog leaned against him. Usually, Vince didn’t go for guys who were on the small, skinny side, not because he didn’t like them, but because he worried he might get too energetic and hurt them by accident while pounding their cute asses.

He had none of those hang-ups when it came to Jack. Apparently, all it took was a cute hedgehog with an attitude to make him start considering that, with enough care, he could actually enjoy the pounding he had in mind for the skinny guy in question.

“It’s nuts, I’m telling you,” Jack whispered, his eyes now never leaving the back of Theodore’s head. “I mean, I haven’t even ever thought of getting freaky with guys before.”

“You seem to like me well enough,” Vince teased.

“Yeah. Because you’re likeable,” Jack said.

“Really? I thought you didn’t like me roughing you up. I did have to work a little to get the truth out of you.”

“Yeah, because I thought you were a civilian, not a freaking guardian,” Jack shot back. “Also, you’re not as rough as you think you are. I might like it if you were the guy to get me naked and spread them.”

Vince had to look away for a moment and control the semi twitching in his jeans. Jack’s blabbering might not mean anything, but Vince had discovered that he really liked the guy. Since they were about to confront a powerful witch, it seemed that he needed to get his priorities in order. He had to make his cock behave for sure.

“But the cards say otherwise,” he pointed out in a cool voice.

Jack turned his head to stare at him. He maintained eye contact for far longer than was necessary. “I thought you’d jump at the opportunity to tell me that you’d be honored to mount my skinny ass.”

“Not if you’re destined for Theodore Pembroke,” Vince pointed out. Although he rarely faced rejection from guys, he wasn’t crazy enough to believe that he would stand a chance against a fated mate. Therefore, his cock needed to chill.

“Tsk, tsk, Vee, aren’t you forgetting something?” Jack gestured between them with his hand. “We are both destined for Theodore Pembroke. And with fate and all that, it’s not like you have a choice.”

“By the way Theodore stared at you, like he’s about to eat you, I don’t doubt that you and he are going to do the horizontal cha-cha. As for me, I bet he wants to fight me, but only because I’m in the way between him and you.”

“Nah, nah, come on, Vee. You know the cards only tell the truth. We need to be entangled with him. Both of us. And it doesn’t look like a spiritual thing or something I could work with.”

Vince examined Jack. The clairvoyant’s eyes were on Theodore Pembroke again. He was worrying his bottom lip, biting on it from time to time with his front teeth that made him look like a cute rodent.

“The way your eyes are boring into his sexy back, it’s sure as hell not only spiritual.”

“What are you saying?” Jack asked, looking miffed over having been caught staring. “I mean, he’s only a freaking billionaire, with the body of a Greek god, the eyes of a Nordic supermodel, and hands that look like they might snap me in half, but in the good way--”

“Okay, okay, you don’t have to sell him to me,” Vince said. “Obviously, the fact that I saw you first means squat shit when alpha wolves, their packs, and fate are involved.”

“Wait. Are you saying that you want to put your big thing in my small thing?” Jack asked. He pushed his glasses up on his nose and gave Vince what was supposed to be a stern stare.

Vince shrugged. “Why are you acting so surprised? I’m gay, and you’re cute.”

Jack huffed. “I have nothing against you being gay, but you have terrible taste. Terrible!” he said a bit too loudly, while chopping the air with one arm.

“I have perfect taste,” Vee said with a smile. “So, Theodore Pembroke is a walking wet dream and you’re slated by fate to mate with him. What’s the issue?”

Jack pushed himself in Vince’s face, bringing himself way too close for his own good. Despite what fate was saying, Vince had a mind to cradle Jack’s head in his hands and give him a hard kiss on the lips.

“The issue,” Jack whispered, feigning a funny accent that must have been inspired by a cartoon character – the carrot-loving kind – “is that I’ve never had anything in my tiny thing, if you catch my drift. My other thing has never been in other things, either.”

“Wait,” Vince said, frowning a smidge. “Are you a virgin? A complete virgin?”

“Yep,” Jack admitted. “And I’ve never thought of getting banged by alpha wolves while howling naked through the woods. Or getting banged at all. Or banging. Vee,” he said, turning again to stare at Vince through his thick glasses, “I’m a virgin, and I am supposed to have sex. What am I going to do? I don’t even swing that way. Or any way. Yes, if I think about it, I’ve never ever thought of having sex. Is that weird?”

“No, it’s not,” Vince hurried to assure him. “And if you don’t want to have sex at all, that is fine. If I can keep my dick in my pants, no matter how cute I think you are, Theodore Pembroke will do the same.”

“Are you going to protect me?” Jack asked, making puppy eyes at him.

“Without a doubt. The cards must have spooked you for no reason, Jack. As long as you don’t want to, you will not have sex. I promise you.”

“Thanks,” Jack replied, his shoulders slumping wearily. “But what if I want to have sex?”

“Do you?” Vince asked pointedly.

Jack’s eyes traveled to Theodore again. Vince had seen that look enough times to know what it meant. However, Jack needed to come to terms with the changes happening inside his mind in his own time. Theodore would behave if he wanted his pack back and Jack was the key. After all, the cards might just be talking about a spiritual connection, not a physical one.

“I’m a virgin, and I’m suddenly a slut,” Jack murmured.

“What? How?” Vince had to admit that he was starting to feel a bit at a loss when it came to understanding Jack’s convoluted logic.

“A certain part below,” Jack pointed at his lap, “reacts.” He said the last word in such a low whisper, Vince had to lean close to hear him. “My dick.”

“I believe you didn’t leave a lot of room for uncertainty,” Vince replied promptly. “But your mind is telling you something else, right, Jack? Maybe that you don’t truly want this. And no one should try to convince you otherwise.”

“Do you think it could be my lack of sex life from before is actually what’s bothering me?” Jack asked, scooting closer to Vince and placing one forearm on Vince’s thigh.

“You’re not interested in sex usually, right?”

“I haven’t been. Until now.” Jack gestured with his chin at Theodore. “Now I only have to look at that guy or you, and I get sudden urges. Really, it feels like an itch. I’m a slut trapped in a virgin’s body. I can totally see myself taking a huge--”

Jack stopped abruptly. Theodore had just turned his head and threw them both a venomous look. Vince was getting tired of this. He’d tell Pembroke later that there was no need to be jealous. As a guardian, Vince understood his role quite well.

“Vee, how am I going to have dick in my life, when I’ve never had dick in my life?” Jack blurted out as if he had kept those words in his throat for as long as Theodore had given them the evil eye.

“Do you want to have dick in your life?”

“I totally do. Even now, the more I look at that yummy asshole, the more my tongue wants to lick him all over.”

“Well, there’s a first time for everything,” Vince said.

He grunted as Jack accidentally pushed his bony elbow right into his crotch. It wasn’t that painful. Only a bit too arousing, because his cock was hard and ready to be touched.

“Will you help me, Vee?”

“Yeah, sure. But how?”

Jack pressed his elbow harder against Vince’s hard-on, obviously without realizing what he was doing, caught up as he was in his own drama.

“You’ll have to show me your dick. I’m sure it’s pretty big. Then I’ll take measurements and compare them with my hole--”

“If you continue to elbow me in the dick, there might not be anything left of it to show to you,” Vince said.

“Oh fuck,” Jack exclaimed and pulled his arm away, blushing up to his eyeballs.

Vince sighed in temporary relief. They were heading toward an unknown disaster, and his cock was thinking of nothing else other than the way Jack’s elbow hadn’t actually felt that bad pressed against it.

Beyond the Veil is the sequel to Wolf in the City.

An alpha without a pack is like a house without a roof.
Theodore Pembroke has lived for years with only vengeance in his heart. As the last of his kind, he knows the dark forces that destroyed his pack will come for him one day—and when they do, he’ll be ready.
But even the best-laid plans will often go awry. The enemy he’s been preparing for turns out to be an unexpected ally, and a sudden and fragile spark of hope makes a mess of everything.
While fighting Ryder Asherman of the Luna’s Sentinels, Theodore uncovers a series of deeper truths: his true enemies remain hidden, there might still be a way to restore his pack, and the cold hunger for revenge burning inside him evolve into something else entirely.
All of this ought to bring him focus and clarity.
If only fate didn’t have such ridiculous demands, like mating with a clairvoyant who looks like he barely weighs a hundred and twenty pounds sopping wet, and partnering with a human guardian who was meant for another pack.
It’s as if Theodore Pembroke is destined for hand-me-downs and becoming the butt of this absurdly attractive skinny pup’s jokes. If this is his fate, then clearly, something is very wrong. And fate might want to rethink things.
