BENEATH HER CONTROL

Chapter Four: Friday Nights and Fragile

Chapter Four: Friday Nights and Fragile

Oct 13, 2025

The city throbbed with Friday night energy, the streets alive with music, laughter, and flashing lights. For most, it was a night to escape. For Elena, it was a precarious balance between letting loose and holding herself together. Classes had been brutal, lectures relentless, projects piling higher than she could handle. And yet, here she was, following her best friend Selene into a crowded building pulsing with the rhythm of a party she hadn’t anticipated enjoying.

Selene’s voice was low, tinged with exasperation. “I still don’t get why we’re here. You’ve barely survived the week, and now you want to throw yourself into this chaos?”

Elena laughed, her hand brushing against Selene’s as they moved through the crowd. “Relax, Selene. Tonight, we live. Don’t tell me you’re already calculating the risks!”

Selene’s eyes flickered over Elena, noting the way her balance wavered slightly, the way her laughter tripped over her words. A small frown creased her forehead, but she followed, steadying Elena whenever she stumbled.

Inside, the party was a whirl of polished surfaces, vibrant lights, and intoxicating music. Elena’s affluent friends from her rich circle were already gathered near the bar, exchanging jokes, toasting, and occasionally glancing over at her. She waved them over, Selene close behind, ever watchful.

“Elena!” Adrian’s voice cut through the din, smooth and teasing. He leaned against a column, his suit impeccably tailored, his grin effortless and charming. Selene’s pulse tightened. She recognized him immediately, remembered their prior encounter during the school trip competition, and noted the subtle way he measured her, studied her posture. Dangerous, she thought. Charming, undeniably, but dangerous.

Elena waved enthusiastically. “Adrian! Over here!” She stumbled slightly, and Selene’s hand was there instantly, catching her.

Adrian’s eyes darted between them. “Still the protector, huh? Selene, right?” He extended a hand, charm radiating effortlessly. “Pleasure. I see you’ve got quite the… responsibility tonight.”

Selene’s jaw set. “She’s fine. And I can handle her.” Her voice was firm, no room for misinterpretation.

Adrian tilted his head, amusement dancing in his dark eyes. “Sure? Because she looks… rather fragile, doesn’t she?”

Elena laughed nervously, leaning against Selene’s shoulder. “I’m fine, really! Selene’s overreacting!”

Selene adjusted Elena’s balance, keeping her close. “No, you’re not fine. You’re leaning too much.”

Adrian stepped closer, lowering his voice. “I could help. I’m careful, strong. You wouldn’t even notice.”

Selene’s glare was sharp. “No one touches her but me. Understood?”

Adrian smirked, stepping back with mock surrender. “Understood. But it’s rare to see someone care so precisely. Quite… intriguing.”

Elena noticed the exchange and frowned slightly at Adrian’s boldness. She leaned toward Selene, whispering, “He’s charming, but… don’t let him get to you. He has a way with people that can be… misleading.”

Selene’s eyes flicked briefly to Adrian, acknowledging Elena’s subtle warning. “Noted,” she replied quietly, though her mind cataloged every glance, every movement.

The music pulsed through the air, bodies swaying in rhythm. Elena laughed, tilted her head back, and took a sip of her drink — one too many. Her balance faltered more noticeably, and Selene immediately stepped closer, wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Time to go,” Selene murmured, her tone firm but gentle. “You’ve had enough.”

Elena protested softly, swaying. “No, I’m… fine. We can stay a little longer…”

Selene shook her head. “Not fine. I said we’re leaving.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow, smirk tugging at his lips. “Mind if I help? I’m good with… delicate situations.”

Selene’s eyes flashed, sharp and unyielding. “No. I’ve got this.” She tightened her hold on Elena, guiding her through the crowd with practiced precision.

The drive was quiet except for Elena’s occasional murmurs and Selene’s soft reassurances. Adrian rode alongside, his gaze occasionally flicking toward Selene, assessing, playful, almost predatory in fascination. Selene noticed but remained silent, keeping her focus on Elena.

Arriving at the mansion, the grandeur of the place reflected the elegance and sophistication Elena had inherited. Selene carried her inside, moving carefully so as not to jostle her.

Celestine had just returned from Aerum Designs’ corporate office. She paused at the top of the stairs, noticing Selene’s careful hold. Elena rested against Selene’s shoulder, trusting completely. Celestine’s chest tightened, a rare flicker of conflict stirring beneath her usual controlled exterior.

Her gaze was steady, measuring, and precise. She cataloged every glance, every subtle movement, every careful adjustment Selene made. Adrian’s presence didn’t escape her attention either; the way he watched Selene, playful yet calculating, ignited a flicker of irritation she did not name.

Selene settled Elena on the sofa, smoothing the blanket around her. “Rest now. You’re safe,” she murmured.

Adrian stepped closer, his tone low and teasing. “You’re careful. That’s impressive… handling someone so delicately.”

Selene’s eyes narrowed, firm. “She’s my responsibility. No one else touches her.”

Celestine observed silently, noting the tension between Selene and Adrian, the protective care Selene exhibited, and the subtle charm Adrian wielded effortlessly. Her lips pressed into a thin line, her mind cataloging every subtle gesture, every exchanged glance, every unspoken word.

Elena murmured something incoherent, and Selene brushed her hair back from her face again. Her focus remained unbroken, aware of every detail, every potential threat.

Outside the room, the city roared with Friday night chaos, oblivious to the delicate balance inside. Celestine’s mind remained sharp, noting Adrian’s teasing stare toward Selene, the protective insistence in Selene’s posture, and Elena’s relaxed, unaware vulnerability.

The night stretched on, a tense equilibrium of observation, attraction, protection, and unspoken awareness. And somewhere deep in the shadows of the mansion, Celestine cataloged everything, aware that this fragile balance was temporary — soon, sparks would fly, decisions would be made, and the intricate web of relationships would shift.

Selene thought she was just helping her best friend.
A few tutoring sessions, some late-night study breaks, and laughter that always felt a little too intimate.

But everything changes the day she meets Celestine Montclair—Elena’s mother.
Elegant. Commanding. Beautiful in the kind of way that makes your heart forget its rhythm.

Celestine isn’t supposed to look at her that way.
Selene isn’t supposed to want her back.
Yet every glance feels like a confession, every accidental touch a promise waiting to be broken.

Now she’s trapped between two impossible hearts:
Her best friend, who’s starting to see her as more than a friend...
And the woman who holds her in silent, devastating control.

In this house, affection feels like temptation—and desire? A dangerous game neither of them should be playing.

Because once she’s beneath her control, there’s no turning back.
