Chapter 15: Schemes in the Shadows
**Dean’s POV**

I stood in my dark room, the red glow of a single lamp shadows on the walls. The cigarette in my hand burned low, smoke curling around me as I stared out the window. The night was quiet, but my mind was loud, replaying that moment in Enzo’s house. Noah, that scrawny human kid, trembling under Enzo’s gaze. The way Enzo pulled him away from me, his eyes cold but protective. It wasn’t just about control. There was something deeper, something Enzo wasn’t saying. I smirked, taking a drag, the smoke burning my throat.

A hand brushed my bare chest, warm and soft, and I felt lips press against my cheek. I didn’t turn, just kept staring out the window, but I knew it was Stan. His touch was familiar, steady, like he could ground me when my head got too wild. “Why so moody tonight, Dean?” he asked, his voice low, teasing. “What happened out there?”

I chuckled, turning to face him. His eyes were sharp, curious, catching the red light. I set my cigarette in the ashtray and cupped his face, pulling him close until our noses nearly touched. “You’re too nosy,” I said, my voice rough but playful. I kissed him, slow and deliberate, tasting the whiskey he’d been drinking earlier. Then I pulled back, smirking, and walked to the bed, sitting on the edge with my back against the headboard.

Stan followed, his steps quiet, and leaned against me, his back pressing into my chest. “Come on,” he said, tilting his head to look at me. “Spill it. You’ve got that look, like you’re scheming something. What happened with Enzo?”

I laughed, picking up my cigarette again and taking a long drag. “Enzo’s something else,” I said, blowing smoke toward the ceiling. “Never thought I’d see him get so worked up over a human. Cherishing him, protecting him like he’s more than just some slave.”

Stan shifted, turning to face me, his eyes narrowing. “What do you mean? Enzo’s got a human kid in his house? That’s what’s got you all smug?”

I grinned, leaning forward to kiss his forehead. “Yeah, Stan,” I said, my voice low. “But it’s not just any human. Enzo’s hiding something, and I think I know what it is.”

Stan smirked, scooting closer until his shoulder pressed against mine. “Okay, now you’ve got my attention,” he said. “What’s your big theory? What’s Enzo hiding?”

I wrapped an arm around him, pulling him tight against me. “I think Enzo found his mate,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “That kid, Noah. He’s got Enzo twisted up in ways I’ve never seen. Protective, angry, like he can’t help himself.”

Stan’s smirk widened, and he leaned in, his lips brushing mine. “A mate?” he said, his voice teasing. “Enzo? With a human? You’re serious?”

“Dead serious,” I said, kissing him back, quick and sharp. “You should’ve seen him. The way he grabbed Noah, told me to stay away. It’s not just about the kid being his property. It’s deeper. I can feel it.”

Stan pulled back, his eyes glinting with mischief. “So, what’s your plan?” he asked. “You gonna mess with him? Push his buttons, see how far he’ll go to keep that kid?”

I laughed, low and rough. “You know me too well,” I said. “Enzo’s my brother, but he’s too stubborn. If that kid’s his mate, he’s fighting it. And I’m gonna make sure he can’t ignore it.”

Stan shook his head, still smirking. “You’re trouble, Dean,” he said. “Always poking at things you shouldn’t. What if Enzo snaps? You know how he gets.”

“Let him snap,” I said, taking another drag. “It’ll be fun to watch. He’s spent years acting like humans are nothing, and now he’s stuck with one he can’t let go of. I wanna see how long he can hold out.”

Stan leaned closer, his hand resting on my chest. “You’re playing a dangerous game,” he said, his voice soft but serious. “Enzo’s not just any Alpha. If you push him too far, it’s not just Noah who’ll pay for it.”

I looked at him, my smile fading for a second. “You worried about me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Don’t be. I know Enzo. He’s my brother. I know how to handle him.”

Stan sighed, but his smirk came back. “Handle him, huh?” he said. “Last time you ‘handled’ him, you ended up with a busted lip.”

I laughed, pulling him closer until our foreheads touched. “Worth it,” I said. “Besides, this is different. Noah’s different. I saw it in Enzo’s eyes. That kid’s got him hooked, whether he admits it or not.”

Stan’s hand slid up my arm, his touch warm. “So, what’s next?” he asked. “You gonna keep messing with the kid? Get under Enzo’s skin?”

“Maybe,” I said, my voice low. “I’ll start small. Talk to Noah, see how he reacts. If he’s Enzo’s mate, he’ll feel it too. And that’ll drive Enzo crazy.”

Stan chuckled, his breath warm against my cheek. “You’re evil,” he said. “But I like it. Just don’t get yourself killed, okay?”

“No promises,” I said, grinning. I kissed him again, slower this time, my hand on the back of his neck. The room felt warmer, the red light softer, as we leaned into each other. His hands moved to my waist, pulling me closer, and for a moment, I forgot about Enzo, Noah, and the whole damn game. It was just us, the air heavy with unspoken promises.

Later, Stan was asleep, his head resting on my chest, his breathing slow and steady. I lit another cigarette, the smoke curling around me as I stared at the ceiling. A smile crept onto my face, slow and sharp. “Finally,” I said, my voice a whisper in the dark. “My brother found a human mate.”

A human. My mate? No. That wasn't right. Humans were weak. They were servants at best—slaves at worst. They didn't belong with us. They weren't made for love.
I turned suddenly and slammed my fist into the stone wall beside me. The sharp crack of bone against stone echoed through the room.
The boy had been dragged away, out of my sight, and I still felt the burn of his presence in my chest. My claws had already pushed out, sharp and uncontrollable. My eyes burned, the edges of my vision tinted red. The beast within me was on the edge of taking over.
"He's nothing!" I roared to no one in particular. "He can't be my mate!"
