Dent, a tall Vox covered in pouches filled with medical supplies, had watched over the two as they slept together in one of her emergency care tents. She knelt down, gently nudging Suzanne awake. "Cmon, sweetie. Time to check on your vitals." Suzanne sleepily nodded, though she didn't make any move to leave Jarvis' embrace. With a quick pinch that made her wince, Dent stuck a small needle into her wrist, attached to a square handheld device.
On a hologram monitor, a display showed several charts and graphs for all sorts of things Jarvis didn't know the slightest about. Though, judging by Dent's reaction, whatever was being shown was a good sign. "Alright, looking solid," Dent confirmed. "Scorched some muscle, but that wasn't hard to repair. All things considered, I want you here at least another day. Jarvis, you're fine, but you can stay if you'd like."
That wasn't even a question for him. After all that had transpired, he wouldn't be leaving Suzanne's side by choice any time soon. He held her closer, running his fingers through her soft hair. "I'm sorry. For... putting you in danger like that." She quickly shook her head, reaching up to gently graze his jawline with her fingers. "No, no... I wanted to be there. You couldn't have known what would happen, and... I wouldn't have gotten to tell you what I needed to say otherwise."
She took a breath before leaning in to kiss his jaw, her eyes fluttering shut. Jarvis flushed red from the intimate contact, but made no move to pull away. "Yeah... I'm grateful for that, at least. I needed this." Suzanne nodded, her eyes opening just a tad as her lips spread into a cheesy smirk. "Oh, I almost forgot," she cooed, her gaze filled with teasing adoration. "I love you too, Jarvis. Before I got so rudely interrupted by a giant, floating ball of metal."
He couldn't help but melt into her, her gentle words brushing aside any soreness or lingering stress from the events of yesterday. Though, the lovestruck contentment didn't last long as a familiar face peeked into the tent.
"Hey, bud," Voran said as he waved slowly at the two of them. "Heard about what happened. You two definitely deserve tons of rest, but I do need you out here, Jarvis." With a sigh, he stood up, straightening out his torn coat. Suzanne panicked, weakly reaching out to Jarvis. "You can't leave yet, please, Jarvis, you... you can't go out there again! We just-" He shook his head slowly, kneeling down to her position on the bed and gently running his fingers through her hair. "I know, but they need my help. I promise I'll come back to you. I always will."
She bit her lip, fighting the urge to cry out in protest, but finally she relented, pulling back. "I... Okay. If you don't, though... I'll find your soul and smack you in the face. Hard. Got that?" She smiled weakly, though her expression betrayed her anguish. Jarvis could only nod, a bitter taste left in his mouth as he departed, following Voran out of the tent.
He squinted as he returned to the blinding light of Vexra's never ending days, staying close behind Voran as they approached a group of two dozen Vox rebellion soldiers, each wearing a bright orange cloak to differentiate themselves from the enemy. They talked amongst themselves, armed with energy swords on their right hips and pistols on the other side, fully armed for light-footed combat. Jarvis felt a tightening of his chest as he realized what was to come.
This was it. They were going to hunt down a mind.
"Here's the deal," Voran began. "The Steel Banner isn't willing to join in. They've already lost a massive amount of people because of the Unrelenting, and I can't blame them for stepping out of this hunt. However, Grant agreed to place the entire city on lockdown for the day, just in case. As for us... we're keeping this operation small." He gestured to the Vox standing around, all facing Voran as he spoke. "Six speeders with four Vox each, all cloaked to keep out of sight. You and I though, Jarvis... we're gonna use your sandspeeder."
Jarvis raised his brow, confused on the last part. "My sandspeeder? It got totalled because of that mind, there's no way we can use it-" Voran raised one finger, pausing his rebuttal. "Yep, took care of it. My best mechanics got it fixed a few hours before you woke up." Jarvis smiled, impressed and relieved that he wouldn't have to waste days fixing the old thing.
"Thing is," Voran continued, "the main part of our plan is you, Jarvis. The Unrelenting... it's famous for not leaving any witnesses alive. You not only left the scene of the first attack without injury, but then beat it in one on one combat! To that mind, you're enemy number one. Its main priority will be taking you out. So, since it knows what your sandspeeder looks like, you and I are gonna try to bait it out."
Jarvis hesitated, unable to deny the fear he felt about facing the Unrelenting again. "Bait it- and what if it decides to summon an army like it did before? Surely twenty six of us isn't enough to beat hundreds of Vox."
"What we're banking on is its ego," Voran assured. "The Unrelenting won't want to bring back up when it comes for you again. Trust me, I wa- I worked with the minds, back in the day. I know what that mind will do." Voran turned, leading the group past a superscraper, where four Vox speeders and Jarvis' vehicle lay waiting in the shade. "Alright, it's go time! Cmon, no time to waste!" With that, the other Vox climbed into their respective speeders before going invisible as they sped off into the wastes.
Jarvis leaned back against his sandspeeder, watching the others vanish from sight. "Where are they going, then?" Voran patted the hood before jumping into the passenger seat as Jarvis sat behind the wheel. "Patrol," Voran responded, "until the Unrelenting shows itself. They'll be ready to intercept as soon as I call for it. Until then? You and I are just gonna ride around for a while."
Jarvis' hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as he tried to steel himself for what lay ahead. His thoughts drifted to Bento and Suzanne... especially to her. She'd be waiting for him, and he couldn't let her down. Not wanting to give himself too much time to worry and overthink, he slammed on the gas and sped off into the dune-filled distance.
20 years ago, an army of androids known as the Vox had invaded Earth, wreaking havoc across the globe. Upon the banishment of their leader, the Vox retreated, and a disaster involving the crash of their mothership led to a great displacement: suddenly, an entire city had been teleported to the Vox home world, Vexra, with millions of people now stranded!
These new people of Vexra, in unison with a group of Vox rebelling against their leaders, have tried to form a stable society, but a hidden foe far beneath the surface seeks to threaten it all...
