Saying that Blue Ben's apartment was huge was an understatement. I didn't realize how big it actually was, but I guess I should've seeing as he gave me all the hints. The outside of the building for this floor alone was about the size of an entire block back home and he did mention that he owned the entire floor. I was surprised as to how he managed to pay for this all with a desk job with such a weird title, or that he lived here alone for a while. When Blue Ben showed me around, I was in shock of all the different things he had. His apartment had 4 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms (I got to choose between 2 of them as he didn't want to give me his room), 3 rooms with just tech stuff (all stuff I've never seen before), a kitchen (that was the size of my apartment back home), a laundry room with two washer and dryer combos (but nothing I had seen before), and a pool (that was somehow sideways).
"So, what do you think?" Blue Ben asked.
"How do you afford this?" I asked.
"There's two ways," Blue Ben said, "One, you're born a millionaire, or two, you're the head of your department at a young age."
"Which one are you?" I asked. Blue Ben chuckled.
"Neither," Blue Ben said, "I was just joking with you. The company prepared this apartment for me when I first arrived and they pay for the rent. They told me that I would have to share with roommates, but for some reason my roommates all leave the apartment for one reason or another after a few months. I've never had a roommate last for more than 6 months."
"Do they still work at the same office as you?" I asked.
"Yes," Blue Ben said, "But the company is so big that I rarely see them. It's not even like we didn't get along, they just leave and I don't know why." I suddenly realized what had happened, they probably feel in love with him and knew that he was scared of relationships, so they left of their own accord so as to save themselves the heartbreak of beign rejected, or they were rejected by him and he didn't even notice.
"Did they do something?" I asked.
"I don't know why you would say that," Blue Ben said, "Why would you assume it's something they did by just talking to me for these past few hours alone?"
"I don't know," I said, "I just get the feeling that they did something and knew that you wouldn't like it by knowing you, so instead of telling you the truth about it, they just left."
"What could they have possibly done?" Blue Ben asked.
"The whole thing about the realtionship issue you have," I said, "That's probably it. They fell in love with you, but knew that it wouldn't work out, so they decided to leave instead."
"You really think so?" Blue Ben asked, "But that's ridiculous, I'm not that attractive, right?"
"I wouldn't say that you aren't," I said.
"Are you sure?" Blue Ben asked.
"I don't have any reason to lie to a man that I just barely met," I said.
"I don't have any reason to believe a person that I just barely met," Blue Ben said.
"Then, we're done talking about it," I said.
"Sounds peachy to me," Blue Ben said.
"How about you tell me about the sideways pool?" I asked, "How is it, you know, sideways?" Blue Ben laughed.
"That's not a pool," Blue Ben said.
"What is it, then?" I asked.
"It's... Well," Blue Ben said, "It's hard to explain to someone from a primitive... I mean... Not as modern world as mine. It's from my world, so it shouldn't really exist here, but I was able to bring it over due to some rather unique circumstances that required me to bring it over to this one."
"What is it?" I asked, "I touched it, it felt like pool water, but it was sideways."
"It's a decommissioned pressure chamber," Blue Ben said, "My world was able to repurpose molecules to build pressure chambers out of waste materials so that we could reexamine people's brains to see what underlying conditions are either helping or harming a person's body. It also helps them remove the conditions that would harm the person or others, but it became decommissioned due to the fact that removing the negative conditions sometimes led the person to losing pieces of themselves as well as death in too many cases. I was asked to bring it over to see if they could use it and replace the bad conditions with other better conditions, but they never actually got to the point where they used it."
"That's really..." I started, but couldn't think of what to say.
"It's weird, I know," Blue Ben said, "But that's why they decided on me when they had this position to fill, because they knew that I could get my hands on one. I'm not sure why you were brought over, but they don't choose just anyone to bring over from another world. There's always something that you bring to the table that nobody else can."
"I think they've gotten the wrong person then," I said, "I don't really have anything that is different about me except for my identity really. I'm just like everyone else aside from identifying as non-binary."
"There has to be something," Blue Ben said, "They don't choose just anyone, Rory. I mean, our mind-link might be part of it, right?"
"Mind-link?" I asked, "You mean how I knew your name without knowing you?"
"Yeah, and I knew your face," Blue Ben said, "Without knowing you."
"I don't understand it," I said, "But I guess it makes some sense if it's that."
"I'm not sure how we got that either," Blue Ben said, "But it's much better knowing that you actually exist than just some figment of my imagination."
"Yeah, but I don't have a good feeling about it," I said.
"What do you mean?" Blue Ben asked.
"I don't know how to describe it," I said, "But maybe us meeting is not a good thing? Like you said before, the reason why you don't want to be in a relationship is because a monster ate your friend after he told everyone he got into a relationship. And for me, I don't feel comfortable with a lot of people due to them dismissing my identity."
"Excuse me?" Blue Ben asked, "You think it's because of romance? What a joke."
"If it's not romance, then what could it be?" I asked, "Premonitions like that tend to involve romance or being enemies. I don't see you as being an enemy, so what then?"
"Do you seriously believe that bull?" Blue Ben asked, "Certainly there's another option. You just haven't thought of it yet."
"Then, I'm your first test subject in that sideways pool," I said, "I don't know. Just give me some kind of clue." There was a weird chime, which caused Blue Ben to look at his wrist and a hologram appeared, of some unknown alien.
"I hope you brought the person we asked you to pick up with you, Ben," the alien said, "The Council has decided to place Rory Hamilton in your apartment. They are not to be toyed with, do you understand? The Council understands your personality, but demands that you respect Rory Hamilton. If we hear even one word of Rory not feeling comfortable with you, you will be the one to move and not Rory. Do I make myself clear?"
"I brought them to my apartment," Blue Ben said, "I understand completely, Orbion. You make yourself crystal clear."
"Do not disappoint us again, Ben," the alien said.
"I'll try my best not to," Blue Ben said.
"Okay, good," the alien said, "Conversation over. I really hope the match-making service didn't screw up again. This guy is a tough one." Blue Ben frowned and put his hand over his wrist.
"Uh..." Blue Ben said, "I guess you were right?"
"You mean that they tried to get you married and failed?" I asked.
"That would explain a lot," Blue Ben said, "I'm such an idiot."
"No, you're not," I said, "They're the idiots that probably never bothered to ask you about your preferences before doing this to you."
"But why would they want me to get married?" Blue Ben asked.
