I Survived the Troubled Waters

She Called It A Debt She Owes

She Called It A Debt She Owes

Oct 19, 2025

After I submitted my translated homework, the teachers gave me better scores, but the English teacher, Mrs. Sanderson, seemed to still be upset with me due to only translating half of what I originally submitted. I tried to explain to her that the other half of what I wrote didn't actually apply to the topic at all, because Roxanne had told me that nobody from Earth would understand the half that I omitted, which made me omit it in the first place. So I rewrote the essay again with Roxanne's help and got an even better score.

"Roxanne, are you seriously crushing on the only boy in this school who doesn't know your past with Emmett?" Someone asked as I was facing the other way.

"I have a right to like whomever I choose," Roxanne said in a defiant tone, "Besides, the ones that know the truth would tell you that it wasn't my fault to start with."

"And who would they be?" The person asked again.

"Definitely not you," Roxanne said, "And I'm pretty sure you know why, Jessica."

"You know this is why nobody likes you, Roxanne," the girl, Jessica, said.

"The feeling is mutual," Roxanne said, "I'm glad that you're not the one I owe a debt to. You'd easily make me regret it."

"You're talking in riddles again," Jessica said, "You do know that people hate those, right?"

"They don't get them because they don't know what I know," Roxanne said, "Because the riddles are only understood with a certain knowledge that not many have. You'd be both lucky and unlucky to have this knowledge, but in your case, Jessica, I think you'd be better off not even thinking about it."

"Stop treating everyone around you like they're idiots," Jessica said, "So what if you have a high IQ or whatever? It doesn't matter if you can't keep friends or make good decisions." I turned around and looked at Roxanne and this girl named Jessica. Roxanne looked rather composed while Jessica looked rather angry.

"Roxanne, what do you mean by a debt you owe?" I asked, "And who do you owe the debt to?" Roxanne frowned, her eyes started to tear up.

"You were listening," Roxanne said, "This is embarrassing."

"Oh, it's the transfer student," Jessica said, "You should stay away from Roxanne, she's got a terrible temper on her. She beat up her last boyfriend and got him expelled instead of her."

"I do not believe it for a second," I said, "You must have only heard lies, because Roxanne here is about as ferocious as a rabbit. And if what you said was even slightly true, it would have only been in self-defense if anything. Also, the riddles are just alluding to something that her and I share, but you do not understand."

"You're just as weird as her," Jessica said. She left the table.

"Thanks, Arthur," Roxanne said, "Not a lot of people even try to understand me. I guess, as thanks, I could answer those questions. The debt I owe is for something stupid I did as my past self, but the person who I owe this debt to is not just one person, but many. The first person I wanted to clear this debt with... Well, it is you, but I don't feel comfortable talking about why I owe you or anyone else a debt in the first place, as the reason in itself is rather... Embarrassing... Just like finding out that you were paying attention to my conversation with my former friend, Jessica."

"I'm sorry that I accidentally embarrassed you, Roxanne," I said.

"I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about me liking you," Roxanne said.

"I'm not one for romance," I said, "But it's simply because I don't know enough about it."

"Do you want to learn?" Roxanne asked.

"Maybe, if it's you," I said. Roxanne blushed.

"Are you sure, Arthur?" Roxanne asked, "There's a saying here that says you can't teach an old dog new tricks."

"I'm in a young body," I said, "And I prefer wise instead of old."

"You were stuck in a body that didn't age a day over 25 for 1,975 years," Roxanne said, "But do you really want to grow old with me?"

"I guess it sounds weird when you put it like that," I said, "But, I don't really see myself with anyone else by my side."

"Why does it sound like you two are proposing to each other in a very odd manner in my classroom?" Our math teacher, Mr. Crater, asked, interrupting us. I realized that the school day was at its end and everyone else had left the room except for Roxanne, the teacher, and I.

"Proposing?" I asked, "Like a quest proposal?"

"No, Arthur," Roxanne said, "He thinks that it's a marriage proposal."

"But Mom told me that marriage here should take place when we're 18 years of age at least," I said, "We are only 15, so it's far too early."

"I'll take him with me, sorry about this, Mr. Crater," Roxanne said.

"It's okay," Mr. Crater said, "I was just a bit surprised. It's not everyday that someone proposes in a classroom, especially in a high school. The way you asked sounded a bit odd too, but I have to say that I'm rooting for you two. I do think Jessica Martin's parents need to be talked to because this is the second time I've found her act like that. I'm not exactly sure about who knows the truth amongst the students, but all the staff here know and we understand how scary that must have been for you, Roxanne. If you need to talk to an adult about it, I'm here for you. Emmett Jasper was a cruel boy, but you shouldn't take what your peers who don't know the truth to heart. I hope you are able to get past what he did to you, even if it might take some time. You deserve better and hopefully, you and your boyfriend here will be together for as long as you can be. You seem like a really kind boy, Arthur Brown, so please take care of Roxanne here."

"Thank you, Mr. Crater," Roxanne said, "But Arthur and I should really go."

"I understand," Mr. Crater said, "Have a good weekend."

"Thank you," I said. Roxanne dragged me out of the classroom and we went back over to her house.

"We're playing Fables until we drop!" Roxanne said when she sat down on the couch in her living room, "Mom said that since we fixed all your screw ups that it's okay to let you stay the night to celebrate. You told your family, right?"

"It was discussed this morning," I said, "But Mom was a bit skeptical as you are a girl. She didn't understand why your Mom was okay with your boyfriend spending the night. She seems to think that you and I have been dating since school began."

"You agreed to be my boyfriend in Mr. Crater's classroom," Roxanne said, "But we don't have to go at a pace that makes you uncomfortable. I know that you're learning, but love isn't something that has to be fast to be enjoyable. We just have to find our own pace."

"But didn't Mr. Crater misunderstand that as a marriage proposal?" I asked.

"He did," Roxanne said, "But I was just trying to do what is best for you and I. You don't seem to get it through your thick skull unless I make it into a marriage proposal. I really do like you, Arthur, but sometimes you try too hard to make sense of things that should come easy to someone who grew up on Earth. If only you were reborn here into a baby's body, like I was, you wouldn't have so many difficulties, but even Faithilla can screw up sometimes. Gods and Goddesses can make mistakes too, but sometimes those mistakes are harder to fix when they do. I just wish that I could've found an easier way to pay the debt I owe all of you, but you owe me too. Promise me that you will marry me this time. I don't want anyone aside from you, Arthur Brown."

"I can promise you this," I said, "But I still don't really understand what you mean. You and I are only 15, things may change before we both are 18. I still don't know who you are."

"You keep doing this," Roxanne said, "It's who I was, not who I am."

"I still believe that whoever you were is who you still are," I said, "Something about you feels wrong, but I can't put my finger on it. Are you really a reincarnator like me or are you something completely different?"

"I'm definitely not just any old reincarnator," Roxanne said, "But that's for me to know and you to find out. If you can't figure it out by the time we're both 80, then maybe I'll tell you."

"Will we age well?" I asked.

"I hope so," Roxanne said.

Roxanne and Arthur finally get together... But will Arthur ever figure out who Roxanne was? And will they stay together until they're 80?

Also, this story takes place in 2011, in my mind, for reference.

Arthur Brown was a Hero who saved his world 1700 times and lived 2000 years. His death was sudden and unexpected, with him drowning. He got reincarnated into the body of a 15 year old boy who was also named Arthur Brown, but this boy looked nothing like him and lived on Earth, a mundane planet with no real threats and nobody to tell him what quests he needs to take. He now lives with the other Arthur Brown's family: a grandmother who needs care, his mother who is trying hard to be the sole caretaker of his grandmother while taking care of the house, and his father who is typically not home due to his job. How is Arthur going to survive high school or living on such a boring planet?
