Ploysuay and Ae sighed in mutual resignation. The non-refundable deposit for this house was too substantial to abandon, leaving them no choice but to endure their new, unsettling residency. Frustrated, they spent hours searching for any historical news or data about Rin Fah House. Strangely, nothing appeared; no back issues of newspapers, and not even local ghost stories seemed to specifically reference the name. This lack of information paradoxically eased their anxiety, leading them to conclude that the sinister tales were likely just local fabrications.
During the day, Ploysuay and Ae were consumed by unpacking, leaving little room for morbid thoughts. But as the darkness of night crept in, the deep silence and the house's inherent creepiness quickly regained their hold.
"We checked the records, didn't we? I think the villagers just made up stories to scare us," Ae offered, trying to sound confident.
Ploysuay blinked slowly and nodded in agreement. "I pray you're right."
"But, just for peace of mind... I'm sleeping with you tonight," Ae declared, quickly scrambling onto the antique bed. Ploysuay’s eyes swept the room with lingering unease before she settled down beside her friend.
"Let's leave the light on, just in case," Ploysuay suggested.
Ae rapidly nodded. "I was thinking the exact same thing."
Wrapped tightly in the cocoon of their blanket, the two women fought to calm their minds. No matter how chaotic or jumpy their thoughts were, they had to force themselves to sleep tonight.
The pervasive darkness swallowed everything whole outside. The creamy moonlight stretched long, pale shadows onto the damp grass beneath the Plumeria tree in front of Rin Fah House. The night breeze drifted lazily, like a quiet current of death sweeping through the air, marked only by the soft rustling of leaves. A faint light from a second-story window spilled onto the dark figure of a man standing motionless beneath. His sharp features tilted up towards the weak light, his eyes unnervingly cold and still, as though he were patiently waiting for the puzzle hidden deep within the shadows to reveal itself.
