Chattrakul's house, a modest, single-story brick dwelling, was nestled amidst a lush, shady garden located behind Rin Fah House. The path leading to it was paved with dark brown laterite bricks, meticulously bordered by vibrant flora, creating a feeling of profound tranquility. The air was cool, imbued with the crisp, earthy scents of nature. The faint gurgle of a small pond mixed with the rustle of the leaves in the breeze, composing a soothing lullaby for the soul.
As Ploysuay and Ae reached the small house, they found a tall, lean elderly man in traditional Mor Hom (indigo-dyed) clothes, his hair a shock of pure white. He looked up from his gardening work, a hoe still in his hand, and offered the new tenants of Rin Fah House a warm smile.
"Good morning, Chattrakul," Ae and Ploysuay greeted him, bowing respectfully. Chattrakul returned the gesture with kind benevolence.
"May you be blessed. Is there anything I can help you with?" he asked willingly. Ploysuay nervously pressed her lips together before speaking.
"Well... there's just a small thing we were wondering about, concerning the house we are staying in now," she offered a dry smile to Chattrakul, whose expression remained placid.
He gestured toward a marble bench set up beside his house, then led them to the spot designated for conversation.
"Please, have a seat," he said simply, inviting Ploysuay and Ae to rest. "Wait a moment. I'll fetch some water for you." Chattrakul quickly disappeared inside his house.
Ploysuay and Ae sank onto the cool marble bench, their eyes sweeping the quiet, serene surroundings of the house manager's dwelling, accompanied only by the soft, incessant chirping of crickets.
The elderly man soon returned with two glasses of orange juice. The two women gratefully thanked him and quickly accepted the glasses. Chattrakul settled onto the bench opposite them, observing the two women for a brief moment before inquiring about the purpose of the Rin Fah tenants' unexpected visit.
"You mentioned something you were wondering about... What might that be?"
Ploysuay paused, hesitating slightly, then summoned the courage to ask.
"Please don't think I'm nosy, but it’s been bothering us... It’s about Rin Fah House that we're renting," she lowered her voice, pausing cautiously.
Chattrakul looked at Ploysuay for a moment, then asked immediately:
