Through the Royal Gate

Chapter 17 – The Price of Balance

Chapter 17 – The Price of Balance

Oct 26, 2025

The city woke under a pale orange sky. Smoke drifted over the rooftops from the night fires the guards had set to calm the air after another tremor. People whispered that the gods were angry, that the palace had angered the earth itself. Lena heard their voices through the courtyard walls as she carried scrolls to the prince’s study.

Inside, Alden stood by the map again. Fresh ink covered the parchment, new circles and red lines added by his hand. He looked up when she entered. “The Gate sleeps, but only barely. It listens when you move. I can feel it through the stone.”

Lena set the scrolls on the table. “Then we need to finish what we started. The pattern is missing pieces. I can sense where they belong, but not what they mean.”

The prince nodded. “I asked the scholars to compare your drawing with the old records. One phrase kept returning—‘Balance requires price.’ They believe the final rune is not a symbol but a mark of offering.”

“Offering?” Lena frowned. “You mean a sacrifice.”

“Every seal ever made demands something in return,” Alden said. “The Gate was never closed without cost.”

Lena crossed her arms. “If you’re suggesting what I think you are, the answer is no.”

He gave a small smile, weary but kind. “I expected that. I will not ask you to give your life for mine.”

They both looked down at the map. The red circles pulsed faintly under the light. It reminded Lena of a heartbeat, steady but fragile. “Maybe there’s another way,” she said. “Maybe the Gate isn’t asking for death. Maybe it’s asking for something equal to what it gave.”

Alden leaned forward. “And what did it give you?”

“A second chance,” she said quietly. “A life I wasn’t supposed to have.”

For a moment neither spoke. The silence between them was heavy with things neither dared to say.

Then Elara burst through the door, breathless. “Your Highness, the Queen Mother requests your presence. She says the council will act if you refuse again.”

Alden’s face hardened. “They want to open the lower doors,” he said. “Fools.”

Elara glanced at Lena. “They think you control it. They think if they take you to the chamber, the Gate will listen.”

Lena felt her throat tighten. “And if it doesn’t?”

“Then they will blame you anyway,” Alden said. “We must act before they do.”

He turned to Elara. “Bring Mira. I trust her more than any of them. Tell her to meet us by the eastern stair before sunset.”

Elara nodded and hurried out.

When they were alone again, Alden said, “If the council moves faster than us, they will break the pattern entirely. We need to repair it first. Once it’s complete, we control the decision, not them.”

“How long do we have?”

“Until nightfall.”

They worked in silence for hours, copying symbols, testing fragments of translation. The meaning of the last rune remained uncertain. Every version translated to one word—exchange.

As the sun lowered behind the towers, the air in the study began to shake with faint vibration. Dust drifted from the ceiling. The Gate was waking again.

Alden rolled up the map and handed it to her. “Take this and go to the lower hall. If the council tries to open the door, stop them. I will delay the Queen.”

“You can’t face them alone,” Lena said.

“I can,” he said. “Because they still believe I serve them. You, on the other hand, they fear. Use that.”

She wanted to argue but his expression left no room. She took the scroll and ran.

The palace corridors felt endless. Guards shouted orders as tremors shook the walls. Torches flickered. The air smelled of smoke and salt. When she reached the lower hall, she found six councilors already there, chanting before the sealed door. The runes around the frame blazed white.

“Stop,” she shouted. “You’ll tear it open.”

The oldest councilor turned. “It calls to us,” he said. “We will bring balance back by force if we must.”

“The Gate doesn’t understand force,” Lena said. “It understands intent. If you open it now, it will choose for you.”

They ignored her. The ground cracked beneath their feet. Light burst from the seams.

Lena ran forward, slamming her hand against the door. Pain seared through her arm. The runes flickered, then dimmed. The councilors stumbled back.

The voice came again inside her head. The way is not closed. Balance demands exchange.

She whispered, “Then take from me what you gave.”

The chamber shook once more, then went still. The light withdrew like a wave fading into shore. The runes turned dark.

Lena collapsed to her knees. Her vision blurred. The crystal in her pocket had shattered into dust.

From behind her came Alden’s voice, breathless but steady. “You stopped them.”

She looked up, half smiling. “For now.”

He reached down and lifted her to her feet. “You said the Gate asked for an exchange. What did it take?”

She opened her hand. A faint scar now crossed her palm where she had touched the seal. “Something small,” she said softly. “For something greater.”

Alden looked toward the dark door. “Let’s hope that’s enough.”

But deep beneath the palace, unseen by either of them, the faint sound of water and wind began again—the slow heartbeat of the Gate still alive, waiting for the true price to be paid.
