Aurora of love

The Bridge of Ice

The Bridge of Ice

Oct 28, 2025

The river that ran behind Frost Haven had frozen thick enough for trucks to cross Each morning the ice groaned under the weight of supply sleds from the next town The sound echoed like thunder through the valley and everyone had learned to listen to it Michael stood near the bridge watching a convoy roll across slow headlights cutting through the mist The fire post had been up since dawn checking every line every heater every engine because storms were coming again This far north the weather moved like a living thing

He carried a small tool bag and wore his heavy coat The air was sharp enough to sting but clear enough to see the horizon A faint green shimmer bent over the clouds like a curtain It was almost beautiful enough to make him forget the work still waiting behind him Elena’s voice came from the ridge You plan to stare at the sky all day or help She walked down toward him her red scarf pulled tight around her neck a clipboard in hand He smiled and said Thought I’d make sure the sun still works She said It’s Alaska It barely does

They met halfway on the bridge The wind bit at their faces The ice cracked faintly underfoot not breaking just complaining He knelt beside a fuel sled checking the hoses and straps while she wrote notes beside him The drivers waited a few feet back stamping their boots She said You trust this ice He said Trust might be the wrong word She said Then what keeps you walking on it He said Same thing that kept me walking into fires habit and hope

When the last sled crossed she waved the team to move on The engines growled fading into the white distance They started back toward town together The snow squeaked beneath their boots The world around them was empty and wide She said Do you ever miss noise He said Sometimes but I don’t miss what came with it She said City sirens He said City everything She said So you’d rather freeze than listen to traffic He said I’d rather hear the wind

The main road back to Frost Haven wound between tall pines their tops heavy with snow The silence there felt heavier than the wind She walked ahead of him her hair loose and catching bits of frost He watched her move with the same calm she showed in chaos steady not slow When they reached the first houses she stopped and looked back at him He said What She said Nothing just making sure you’re still behind me He said Always

By midday the sun sat low again a weak orange disc barely clearing the ridge The town was alive people repairing fences cutting wood hauling supplies for the next storm The fire post door stayed open warmth spilling into the street Michael stepped inside shaking off the cold The place smelled like metal and smoke and coffee Aaron and two others were repairing the pump system They waved when he entered He checked their work asked questions corrected a few bolts then said Good It’s holding

Elena came in after him dusting snow off her scarf She said Council wants a meeting tonight They want to talk about building a second outpost north of the ridge He said They’re serious She said Very They say too many cabins are too far from here She paused then added They also asked if you’d lead the project He said Me She said Who else He said I’m not twenty anymore She said That’s why you’re perfect for it He said I’ll think about it She said You already said yes you just don’t know it yet

That evening the meeting filled the community hall The walls glowed with lantern light The mayor spoke first outlining costs and risks Everyone listened quiet Then he turned to Michael said We need someone who knows fire who knows people who knows how to build something that lasts You taught us to protect our town now help us protect what’s beyond it

Michael looked around the room at faces he knew farmers fishermen teachers children even Aaron standing tall near the back He thought about the long years the smoke the city alarms the sleepless nights the way he used to run on instinct instead of choice Now every move felt chosen He said I’ll do it but only if I have a team and only if we train twice as hard as before because the north doesn’t forgive mistakes They nodded as one That was answer enough

Afterward he and Elena walked back through the square The snow had stopped the sky open above them The aurora began to rise again soft bands of green shifting over the bay She said You could have said no He said I tried She said Liar He said You like when I say yes She said Only when it’s to me He laughed then stopped walking to look at her You’re really not afraid of this anymore are you She said I was never afraid of fire only of being useless He said You’ll never be that

They stopped by the dock The ice reflected the sky light bending in the cracks He said You know this will mean longer days more danger more cold She said You know I don’t care He said I know She said Then stop trying to talk me out of it He said I wasn’t I was making sure you were ready She said I’ve been ready since the first fire

He looked out across the bay The green lights shimmered brighter now stretching from ridge to ridge The world seemed endless but small enough to hold if you stood still long enough He said You ever think about what this all means us here this town this life She said It means we stayed when everyone else left It means we made something that doesn’t burn away He said That’s enough She said That’s everything

The wind picked up blowing snow around their feet The sound of the frozen river echoed far off under the bridge they had crossed that morning He thought of how fragile it all was yet how strong it had become The ice held The town held They held

Later that night he wrote again in his notebook under the light of a single lantern He wrote We build not to fight but to stay We light fires not to burn but to keep the dark away He paused looked out the window at the aurora still waving across the sky and added one more line The bridge holds because we walk it together

He closed the book set it beside the bed Elena already asleep her breathing soft He lay down beside her listening to the wind fade into quiet The aurora light spilled through the window across the floor like a promise The bridge of ice would melt come spring but the path they built would not

In Frost Haven nothing burned tonight only the sky
